Experienced Gardener

An exciting opportunity has become available for an experienced gardener to maintain a stunning 15-acre estate in West Sussex, situated between East Grinstead and Ardingly. The grounds to the estate were laid out in the 1930’s and owners have spent time restoring the gardens to their former glory.

The garden consists of terraced lawns and beds around the house, a formal parterre hidden away, a woodland dell, a paddock that has been planted up with fruit trees and a soft fruit cage, and informal shrubs /trees /plantings leading down to 2 natural ponds at the far end. There are several shaped yew hedges and topiary as well as a greenhouse, large, raised beds for vegetables within a netted structure next to an oak barn that houses much of the equipment, and with a heated gardener’s loft above.

The historic gardens cover a wide spectrum from formal lawns and borders to woodland and an orchard, with varied and diverse plantings, specimen trees. Although the gardens are well established, the gardener will continue to renovate certain areas from time to time.  There is a full range of gardening equipment available including a Kubota ride on mower, a Kubota Mid-sized tractor and associated implements, Kawasaki Mule and other relevant powered and non-powered machinery.

The successful applicant will have a high level of horticultural knowledge and the experience necessary to both maintain and develop the garden’s vibrancy. There are 3 part time gardeners who each work one day per week and the experienced gardener will manage them. The garden is set on a slope and the experienced gardener will need to be physically fit as well as comfortable with ladders as some of the hedges and topiary are quite tall. Spray certificates as well as chainsaw are desirable but not a requirement.

The gardens provide opportunity for further development, and improvement and the owners are keen to find someone who is not only prepared to work closely with them in providing advice and guidance, but who also has the energy and enthusiasm to take real ownership of the gardens.
