Now with an opportunity for a Horticultural Buyer to join the Purchasing Team. You will be responsible for sourcing stock of the correct quality, quantity and cost in a timely manner so that agreed stock levels and orders can be fulfilled as required.

Job Description

This is a unique opportunity for the right person to join a growing and dynamic team with key responsibilities including:

  • Assist in all areas of the buying process as required by the Purchasing Manager.
  • Build and maintain good relationships with existing and new suppliers.
  • Raising buying lists and communicating requirements with suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain catalogues of information regarding suppliers’ range of supply and prices.
  • To assist the Purchasing Manager with the supplier selection process.
  • Ensure the quality and specification of all items purchased meet or exceed that agreed with the Suppliers.
  • Working closely with the Purchasing Manager and our supply base, continuously review and forecast market trends and identify changes which could affect margins, reporting movements to the business in a timely manner.
  • To work with a continuous improvement mind set engaging with other functions within the Supply Chain to deliver measurable savings that are beneficial to the company.
Candidate Skills
  • Horticultural knowledge is essential.
  • Highly organised and have the ability to prioritise and allocate time effectively.

  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organisation.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

This role is a full-time permanent position Monday to Friday (40 hours per week) to be worked between 8:00am – 5pm offering 23 days holiday plus bank holidays, increasing after 5 years’ service. Due to continued growth, an opportunity has arisen for a Plant Care Manager to join the Production team based in Shropshire. Reporting into the Production Director, the role will include the responsibility for meeting the quality requirements of growing stock, through appropriate and timely plant husbandry activity. Additionally, to provide direction, support, and development to the plant husbandry team ensuring they thrive in an environment of continuous improvement. This is a hands on position where the suitable candidate will be expected to lead by example.

Job Description
  • Lead and develop the Plant Care team, identifying personnel development requirements and ensuring delivery.
  • Ensure appropriate growing space requirements are met in liaison with Container Supervisor.
  • Manage and maintain appropriate irrigation delivery for all growing crops.
  • Ensure plant husbandry is completed to meet specific quality requirements and sales windows.
  • Working with Crop Protection Supervisor to ensure Pest and Disease control requirements are met.
  • Improve on and maintain weed control across site.
  • Contribute to development of the Company’s technical knowledge, best practise, and innovation.
  • Ensure legislative compliance.
  • Provide plant care back up as required on other sites.

Job Description

Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Sole Gardener has arisen on a beautiful private estate in north Shropshire.  This position will suit a qualified/skilled, physically fit, and enthusiastic gardener in search of a rewarding role in which to make their mark.

The two-acre formal garden is situated with a large estate which includes a working farm and hosts partridge/pheasant shoots.  The estate forms part of three family-owned estates, with the family dividing their time between Shropshire and the North and West of Scotland.  The garden was formed over 10 years ago and contains formal lawns, large herbaceous borders, a rose garden, productive walled kitchen garden, a reflective pool, small woodland garden, an orchard, and tennis court.  Mature trees provide a structural backdrop to the property, while new tree plantings have been maturing over the past 10 years.  

 Key responsibilities of the Sole Gardener will be to:

-Maintain the gardens and grounds to a consistently high standard all year round.

-Produce vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers for the household.

-Propagate plants for border planting and pot displays

-Maintain water features

-Carry out other reasonable associated duties as directed by the Principles

-Supervise and coordinate contractors working in the property grounds

-Prepare, stock, and set fires in the family home and shooting lodge

-Be happy to feed two ex-racehorses on winter mornings

-Support estate activities where necessary

Applicants must possess the following:

-Good plant knowledge and a high level of horticultural craft skills

-Excellent time keeping, flexible in approach, attention to detail and take pride their work

-Able to work well in a team and liaise with other estate staff

-Capable of working unsupervised and on own initiative

-Excellent health and level of fitness, with a positive disposition

-Full clean driving licence

-Experienced in using and maintain a wide range of garden machinery.

-An academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or above is desired, though applicants with extensive and demonstrable experience will always be considered.

Working hours are normally Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00, however, applicants will be required to work evenings and weekends when required for the purposes of harvesting produce, watering duties, etc. as the seasons dictate.

Accommodation is offered with this role in addition to a generous salary by way of a two-bedroom semi-detached, unfurnished cottage with a small garden.  Candidates currently living within a reasonable commute of the estate are welcome to apply on a live-out basis if accommodation is not required.

A rare opportunity for an experienced Handyman/woman or skilled Estate Worker has arisen on a beautiful private property in Shropshire.  This role will suit a very well-rounded and practically minded person with experience in ensuring the smooth running of large private estates.

The property is large and diverse and is situated within surrounding farmland which is owned and managed by the estate.  The gardens are looked after by professional horticulturists, though some basic maintenance may be required of the successful candidate.  Applications from those with experience of driving tractors and in the operation of heavy machinery are welcome, though these aspects can be taught if candidates are skilled in other valuable areas.

The role will predominantly involve the following:

-General maintenance to include painting and decorating. A basic understanding of plumbing, carpentry skills, fencing and a good practical understanding of property upkeep is required. 

-Tractor driving on a busy arable farm especially at harvest time with long hours to be expected. Experience not essential but must have a practical attitude towards learning and be able to learn and work with associated software.

-PA1 & PA2 and/or spraying experience would be an advantage but not essential.

-Assisting with airport runs, driving and chauffeuring for the owners.

-Looking after private vehicles

-The possibility of assisting the Gardeners and Gamekeepers during busier periods.

-Some woodland maintenance may be required - the ability to use a chainsaw would be an advantage.

-Looking after a small number of chickens and ducks.

-Some weekend work would be required during busy times.

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualities.

-Be able to show competency in painting and decorating, carpentry, plumbing and other basic general estate maintenance skills.

-An agricultural background would be beneficial but not essential.

-A practical ability with a “can do” attitude is essential.

-Excellent timekeeping, flexibility, and attention to detail.

-Must work well as part of a team and independently.

-Communicate clearly and competently with the owners, the manager and estate staff.

-Must be able to use own initiative and carry out tasks unsupervised.

-To take pride in your work whilst able to remain neat and tidy doing so.

-Discretion is required at all times and a respectful attitude towards principals and property is necessary.

-A full driving license is required.
