An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Handyperson to join a beautiful privately owned estate based in North Shropshire, just outside of Shawbury. This role would suit a well-rounded and practically minded person with enthusiasm, a ‘can do’ attitude and experience in ensuring the smooth running of a private estate.

Responsibilities:
  • General maintenance which should include painting and decorating, a basic understanding of plumbing, carpentry skills, fencing and a good practical understanding of property upkeep. 
  • Tractor driving on a busy arable farm especially at harvest time with long hours to be expected. Experience not essential but must have a practical attitude towards learning and be able to work with software.
  • PA1 & PA2 or some spraying experience would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Assisting with airport runs, driving and chauffeuring for the owners.
  • Looking after estate and private vehicles
  • The possibility of assisting the Gardeners and Gamekeepers as needed during busier periods.
  • Some woodland maintenance may be required, ability to utilise a chainsaw would be an advantage.
  • Some weekend work would be required during busy times.

The successful candidate will possess the following skills:

  • Be able to show that you are competent in painting and decorating, carpentry, plumbing and other basic general estate maintenance skills.
  • An agricultural background would be beneficial but not essential.
  • A practical ability with a “can do” attitude is essential.
  • Excellent timekeeping, flexibility and attention to detail.

Sole Gardener

A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an experienced and well-rounded Sole Gardener on a stunning private estate north of the market town Ludlow in Shropshire. The stunning gardens provide a complimentary frame for the stone building itself which sits within a hamlet of 12. The property is part of a wider estate mainly farmland and run shoots.

The 2.5 acre gardens surrounding the property are rich, diverse and entail 2 ponds, wild garden, lawns, large rose beds, herbaceous borders, beds of flowering perennials, cut flower beds, large glass house and 15 raised beds that make up the vegetable garden. 

The focus of the role is the high-level maintenance of the 2.5-acre gardens and grounds including lawns, mixed borders, rose gardens, hedges and ornamental planting this includes mowing, pruning, care and maintenance of beds and propagation of plants. Additional duties include dog sitting the owners 2 Labradors and a Cocker Spaniel when the owners travel.

Applicants will have good all rounded gardening skills and horticultural knowledge as well as experience growing vegetables and cut flowers.  Experience with propagation and glasshouse work would be a distinct advantage.  Candidates must hold a full UK driving licence due to the rural locality of the property. Spray tickets (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw (CS30/31) would be advantageous but training can be provided if required.

The successful candidate will be a practical hands-on gardener; able to operate and maintain garden machinery such as mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters.  A ‘can-do’ attitude is essential and a flair for continuing to enhance the garden as required.

Accommodation can be provided rent free if required. Sole Gardener

An excellent opportunity for an experienced Sole Gardener has arisen on a beautiful private estate in north Shropshire.  This position will suit a qualified/skilled, physically fit, and enthusiastic gardener in search of a rewarding role in which to make their mark.

The two-acre formal garden is situated with a large estate which includes a working farm and hosts partridge/pheasant shoots.  The estate forms part of three family-owned estates, with the family dividing their time between Shropshire and the North and West of Scotland.  The garden was formed over 10 years ago and contains formal lawns, large herbaceous borders, a rose garden, productive walled kitchen garden, a reflective pool, small woodland garden, an orchard, and tennis court.  Mature trees provide a structural backdrop to the property, while new tree plantings have been maturing over the past 10 years.  

 Key responsibilities of the Sole Gardener will be to:

-Maintain the gardens and grounds to a consistently high standard all year round.

-Produce vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers for the household.

-Propagate plants for border planting and pot displays

-Maintain water features

-Carry out other reasonable associated duties as directed by the Principles

-Supervise and coordinate contractors working in the property grounds

-Prepare, stock, and set fires in the family home and shooting lodge

-Be happy to feed two ex-racehorses on winter mornings

-Support estate activities where necessary

Applicants must possess the following:

-Good plant knowledge and a high level of horticultural craft skills

-Excellent time keeping, flexible in approach, attention to detail and take pride their work

-Able to work well in a team and liaise with other estate staff

-Capable of working unsupervised and on own initiative

-Excellent health and level of fitness, with a positive disposition

-Full clean driving licence

-Experienced in using and maintain a wide range of garden machinery.

-An academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or above is desired, though applicants with extensive and demonstrable experience will always be considered.

Working hours are normally Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00, however, applicants will be required to work evenings and weekends when required for the purposes of harvesting produce, watering duties, etc. as the seasons dictate.

Accommodation is offered with this role in addition to a generous salary by way of a two-bedroom semi-detached, unfurnished cottage with a small garden.  Candidates currently living within a reasonable commute of the estate are welcome to apply on a live-out basis if accommodation is not required.
