Sole Gardener

An incredible opportunity has arisen for a driven sole gardener to work closely with one of the country’s most celebrated horticulturists on developing a 3-acre garden near Heathfield in East Sussex.

The stunning Grade II listed property dates back to the late 13th century with 18th and 19th century additions. Experienced Gardener

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to join a small team on an impressive and unique private estate in East Sussex. This opportunity would suit qualified and experienced gardeners with a particular interest/experience in naturalistic gardening and gardening for wildlife.

Managed organically, the gardens consist largely of meadow and meadow-style plantings, with native hedges and specimen trees, a Walled Garden ripe for development, fruit and vegetable gardens, ponds, glasshouses, and Orangery. The 4-acre Ornamental Garden is set within a 20-acre wider garden, within the wider context of the surrounding estate, which is managed for conservation and wildlife with low-intensity farming and semi-natural habitat restoration.  The desire is for the garden to blend into the wider landscape, with a key focus on the sensitivities of native ecology and methods by which to provide long term natural habitats. Innovative use of native species and on-going ‘design’ is therefore a constant source of interest for the gardening staff, owners and visitors alike.

Suitable applicants will hold an academic horticultural qualification at level 2 or above, good plant knowledge, and be experienced with a wide range of gardening machinery and horticultural techniques.   Candidates must be able to demonstrate an interest in a ‘naturalistic’ gardening style, organic management principles, along with vegetable and fruit production. Enthusiasm, attention to detail and a sense of enquiry are required for success in this role. A chainsaw licence is desirable but not essential.

Main duties and responsibilities of a garden team member include the maintenance and development of a range of garden areas to a high standard, using specialist horticultural skills.  The successful candidate should be able to manage their own workload, plan and prioritise effectively and use initiative to facilitate the team in achieving overall goals on the estate.  The supervision and guidance of garden trainees, students and casual staff may be required of all team members at times, so applicants must be positive in attitude, helpful in manner, and must have a willingness to disseminate their knowledge when such opportunities arise.

Candidates must be physically fit, able to work within applicable health and safety standards and have a commitment to personal and professional development.  A full driving licence is required for this role.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in a progressive, innovative and environmentally beneficial garden, one that is likely to set a shining example to estate gardens of the future.
