Assistant Gardener - Live Out - EC6505 - This position has been filled

A rare opportunity has arisen in the Lake District for an Assistant Gardener to join a historic private estate near Windermere, on a permanent full-time basis.  Applicants should be experienced gardeners with a good understanding of seasonal horticultural practices, and good plant knowledge.  Good physical fitness is important for this role, as is a positive attitude and good sense of humour.  The successful applicant will work under a talented Head Gardener and will have the opportunity to develop their skills.

Set around the Georgian house, this 5-acre private garden was landscaped by Thomas Mawson and is located in the heart of the Lake District with beautiful views across the surrounding countryside.  The garden comprises extensive topiary hedging, extensive lawn areas, shrubs, herbaceous borders, climbing plants, mature trees, large ponds and additional areas of ornamental planting.  The property owners are planning some exciting new projects for the near future, including the installation of a large glasshouse and a kitchen garden.  The successful applicant will therefore have the opportunity to increase their skill set and to play a key role in the further development of this historic site.

Applicants for this role should have demonstrable gardening experience on private estates, good physical fitness, good plant knowledge and the ability to operate garden machinery safely and efficiently.  Attention to detail is essential, as is enthusiasm for horticulture and gardening in general.  The ability to take direction from the Head Gardener, work well within a team and autonomously, communicate effectively, and to work in all weather conditions is important.  Applicants should be flexible in their approach and be willing to work overtime on occasion, for which lieu time is provided.   Although not essential, spraying and chainsaw certificates would also be useful in this position.  Applicants must have a full UK driving licence and should possess (or be able to obtain) a criminal record check.

This position offers a genuine opportunity for candidates to develop their skills and horticultural knowledge within a private estate setting, under the direction of a Head Gardener, in one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

The position offers a generous salary for the right candidate, a 40-hour work week (with usual seasonal variation), and an above average holiday entitlement of 31-days (including bank holidays), with flexibility as to when this can be taken.
