Assistant Gardener

An exciting opportunity is available for a hands-on gardener with good amount of knowledge and skill, to work closely alongside the Head Gardener to maintain the stunning 4 acres gardens set within 30 acres, just outside of Bristol. The Assistant Gardener will form part of the estate team, being reliable and enthusiastic while implementing their knowledge across the garden.

The formal gardens are arguably some of the finest in the southwest, encapsulating four acres, featuring a walled garden, herbaceous borders, parterre, formal lawns, topiary, vegetable and fruit garden, ornamental ponds, parkland, glasshouse, mixed beds, both young and mature trees, mature formal and a tennis court.  

The owners are seeking an enthusiastic, reliable individual, who has experience within a similar setting maintaining gardens to the highest of standards. Applicants will require a rounded skillset including general maintenance techniques alongside pruning, mulching, hedge cutting, cultivation of beds and borders as well as experience using a variety of garden machinery.  Horticultural qualifications would be advantageous, alongside the completion of industry related tickets, such as PA1/PA6 spraying. In addition, any additional experience in handyperson tasks and hard landscaping would be desirable. Applicants should take pride in their work and demonstrate a passion for horticulture, while being personable with the ability to work in a team.

Job Brief

As a Plantarea Assistant Manager, you will deliver an exceptional service to customers and maximise plant sales. In this fast-moving role, you will focus on all areas of plant sales.  The successful candidate will need to be able to,

-Develop, motivate and lead your team and monitor their performance 

-Take ownership of the commercial aspects of your department 

-Advise customers on which plants will best meet their needs  

-Ensure that products are beautifully presented 

-Work with your team to make sure we continue to deliver an unrivalled plant offering 

Key Skills

As the Plantarea Assistant Manager, you’ll need have the following experience;

-Experience of working in a garden centre or garden department within a retail store 

-Experience of buying for a plant area 

-A passion for, and strong understanding of, horticulture  

-Experience of managing retail staff 

Due to our location of the centre, a driving licence and access to your own vehicle would be beneficial. Job Description:

You will be expected to generally operate from home, managing the day-to-day running of the service function within your district, supervising the work of 10 mobile and static site maintenance teams carrying out regular grounds maintenance on commercial sites throughout their region. Each team is equipped with their own van and equipment. The prime role is to ensure that service delivery to the client is to the highest standards and to ensure that financial targets are achieved through the proactive and safe management of staff and resources.

Your duties will include:

  • Regular site visits and meetings
  • Control, motivate, and discipline members of your team
  • Recruitment, training and development of team members
  • Ensuring work is completed to required KPI’s and quality standards
  • Full budgetary accountability for wages, consumables, hand tools and work wear etc
  • Planning work schedules
  • Responsible for the maintenance and safe use of company vehicles, equipment etc
  • Health and safety issues in line with Company H&S manual

Must haves:
