The nursery group have been prolific plant breeders for many years and have brought to market many exclusive varieties.  They are currently seeking an Assistant Technical Manager to join its busy Technical Production Department. This key role will ensure the professional management and delivery of the ICM programme.

Main Objectives:

To monitor pest, disease and weed control across multiple sites in conjunction with Grower feedback. You will need to plan and schedule preventative and reactive sprays and treatments, ensuring all departments are informed of impacts on operations.

Job Description:

You will need to be able to communicate with suppliers and advisors to maintain knowledge and ensure most up to date and relevant products are used; maintain and update COSHH register, responding to changes to authorisations for use; maintain health and safety through appropriate use of pesticides, regular checks, maintenance and calibration of equipment used. 

The key areas of responsibility for this role are to:

  • Manage and implement ICM programmes across all sites
  • Ensure safe Crop Protection working
  • Collaborate with other departments, businesses and organisations; attending meetings which may involve travel
  • Line Management and HR
  • Undertake weekend duties on a rota basis
Key Skills:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Gardener to manage and maintain the private gardens and grounds of a beautiful estate near Haywards Heath in West Sussex. This vacancy is also open to a Gardener and Housekeeper couple who may be looking for an opportunity to live and work on the same estate in their respective professions full time. 

The estate is surrounded by 200-acre fields and the 5-acre formal gardens consist of extensive lawns, flower beds, mixed and herbaceous borders, mature trees and a greenhouse. There is also on site a swimming pool, tennis court and paddock as well as a kitchen garden that is not fully utilised.

The owners have a keen eye for detail and the key responsibility of the gardener is to manage and maintain the gardens and grounds to a high standard, keeping the formal gardens looking immaculate at all times. He / She will be required to undertake a range of normal gardens duties, such as mowing, weeding, planting, strimming, and general maintenance of the garden.

Applicants should ideally have experience working in a similar role and garden. PA1/PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are required for the role, however, the client would be willing to support the training if required. The successful candidate will have good plant knowledge, excellent technical skills and experience operating and carrying out basic maintenance on a range of garden machinery.  

This is an excellent opportunity for a Gardener who is a good team player and also works well on their own. He / She will be organised, able to plan and prioritise workload and work to a high standard. Other requirements for the role are good communication skills and ability to support other staff as there currently is an assistant gardener / groundsperson working onsite. The Gardener should be prepared to work outside in all weathers and have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required.

The owners travel regularly and are looking for a trustworthy Gardener to live onsite. There may be some occasional assistance requested when the owners travel to look after their friendly French bulldog. A competitive salary is provided for the successful candidate which will be reviewed after a 6-month period as well as onsite accommodation is provided with council tax, water and electricity paid by the employer. The House keeping position is a full-time role with a similar package offered as stated below for the Gardener, depending on experience.

Experienced Gardener - Live Out - EC6914

An opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener to join an award-winning, internationally renowned wine-producing brand based in West Sussex.  The successful applicant will join the Head Gardener and one other gardener in working towards objectives for the gardens, ponds and non-Vineyard grounds, including the beautiful private gardens of the CEO.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the general maintenance and development of the gardens with a view to creating an enjoyable experience for guests and visitors.

Set within 13-acres of gardens, the formal aspect comprises 6-acres around the manor house.  A small cottage garden within the grounds is to be maintained in addition to the above.  Garden features within the estate gardens comprise a kitchen garden, wildflower areas, a cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage, an orchard, cloud-pruned box hedging, topiary, a formal courtyard, a large pond and surrounding woodland.  The garden areas of the estate are not managed organically, though chemical use is kept to a minimum.

Applicants will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 2 (or above) and should have at least two years’ experience of working in private estate gardens and/or horticulturally diverse public gardens. Candidates must be confident in their use of garden machinery and with their plant knowledge, have an ability to work to a high standard at all times, and in working to established health and safety standards. Chemical spray certificates are desirable but not essential.  

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include lawn care (mowing, edging, feeding, scarifying, aerating and watering, weeding), planting and pruning, maintenance of the kitchen garden and cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage and orchard, basic maintenance of all garden equipment (and associated liaison with the Estate Maintenance Department as necessary).  Applicants should have a basic awareness of pests and diseases and, with appropriate training if required, will be able to apply chemicals where appropriate.  Maintenance of the irrigation system will be necessary at times, as will that of the composting bins and ponds.  As a member of the small garden team, assistance with gritting will also be required in winter.

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate gardeners who possess good horticultural knowledge and a positive, friendly character.  The successful applicant will be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills and attention to detail.  Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is required, as is the ability to work well within a small team; with diplomacy and a positive attitude.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is located rurally.

A part-time vacancy (of approximately 16-hours/week over two days) has arisen on a stunning private estate based near Petworth, West Sussex.  The 4-acre garden has been created by an internationally renowned designer who is retained on a consultative level.  This opportunity is open to self-employed Skilled Gardeners / Horticulturists, and also to applicants looking for a part-time employed position.  Applicants should be within commuting distance of Petworth as no accommodation is provided with this position.

Estate Maintenance Gardener - Live Out - EC6953 - This position has now been filled

A rare opportunity has arisen on a stunning private estate located close to Littlehampton, West Sussex, for an experienced grounds person/maintenance gardener.  This position would suit a presentable and time-served maintenance gardener with demonstrable experience of working on private estate gardens.

The property spans 50-acres in total, of which 15-acres is managed as a formal garden.  Large expanses of lawn are interspersed with mature trees, areas of ornamental shrubs, potted plants/trees, herbaceous borders and sculptures.  A separate cottage is also located within the estate, with its own garden areas.  The majestic main house provides a focus for the estate, which benefits from views across the garden and to the paddocks beyond. 

Two part-time gardeners ensure the ornamental planting aspect of the site is maintained on an on-going basis.  The new opening will therefore require the successful candidate to take responsibility for the general maintenance of the gardens and estate, i.e. mowing, strimming, leaf blowing, hedge cutting, pest control, weeding and other basic horticultural practices. 

Applicants should have a demonstrable background in horticulture and possess a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Experience with garden maintenance equipment (including ride-on mowers) is essential, as is the ability to manage your own time efficiently.  Academic horticultural qualifications are beneficial but not essential, as are spray certificates (PA1/PA6).  Candidates must be presentable, positive in their approach to the job at hand, physically fit, and be able to apply excellent attention to detail at all times.

In return for your commitment to the role and the estate, an hourly rate of pay is offered; £11.67/hr over a 40-hour week, with a statutory pension scheme.  Working hours are 07:00 – 16:00 Monday to Friday, with half an hour for lunch and two 15-min breaks.  Seasonal variation in work hours may apply during periods of very hot or cold weather, for example, as expected.

Head Gardener - Live In/Out - EC6711 - This position has now been filled

A unique estate in West Sussex is looking for a Head Gardener.

This impressive site includes an Elizabethan house and an acclaimed prize-winning garden that opens to visitors between Easter and October.  The Garden consists of a four-acre Walled Garden with extensive herbaceous borders, a glasshouse, vegetable garden, herb garden, rose garden, and orchard, 7 acres of surrounding landscaped Pleasure Grounds, a Garden Shop and other areas within the curtilage of the House.

The Head Gardener will be accountable to, and will liaise closely and regularly with, the family and the Agent, and be responsible for the maintenance, presentation and development of the Garden to the highest standards.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for all gardening operations.  These include propagation, ordering new stock, planting, edging, watering, weeding, path maintenance, mowing, hedge cutting, pruning, and keeping work areas clean and tidy.  The Head Gardener will propose and implement new planting schemes and other plans for the Garden, to be developed in conjunction with expert opinion when necessary.  The provision of cut flowers (annuals and perennials) and houseplants for display in the House throughout the open season and as required will be necessary, as will the provision of vegetables for the household.  The care of the orchard, fruit trees and other soft fruit, lake management, tree management, pest and disease control, machinery maintenance/servicing programmes and management of the glasshouse will also fall under the responsibility of the Head Gardener.  The successful applicant will be responsible for maintaining records of planting schemes (which will remain the property of the estate). 

The successful applicant will be responsible for leadership of the team of garden staff and volunteers, ensuring they are organised effectively and well-motivated. Staff training needs will also be addressed by the Head Gardener, e.g. the holding of valid spraying and machinery certificates.  Six gardeners make up the team: one Garden Foreman, three Senior Gardeners (each working 4-days per week), one Gardener and one Gardener/Warden (working an average 2-days per week in the garden).  The Head Gardener will also be required to liaise with outside contractors where necessary.

The successful applicant will be involved with establishing a garden budget with the family and the Agent in order to facilitate strict financial controls and procedures with regard to the Garden in general, the Garden Shop and associated stock, machinery, tools etc.  The Head Gardener will be required to prepare a Garden Report every 6 months for consideration at the meetings of the Directors and Trustees of the estate.

Applicants are required to have a good working knowledge of First Aid and risk assessing, such that he/she will be able to carry out all risk assessments and ensure that all statutory requirements and routines are complied with for staff, volunteers and visitors.  The safe storage of all chemicals, fertilisers, machinery, tools, equipment etc. will be the responsibility of the Head Gardener. 

The Head Gardener will play a key part in helping to create, manage and deliver (in conjunction with the administrative team), any public events, and in particular those pertaining to the Garden. 

The successful applicant will act as an ambassador for the estate and be required to assist with the promotion of the Garden in conjunction with the marketing team, including leading the occasional guided tour of the Garden and developing good relationships with visitors and the local community.

Candidate Profile

In addition to fulfilling the requirements outlined in the above description, whilst applicants for this role need not necessarily have previously been a Head Gardener, they must have at least five years horticultural experience in a private or public garden with excellent horticultural knowledge and garden management experience.  They must hold academic horticultural qualifications at Level 3 or above.  Applicants must be able to foster a collegiate atmosphere and have good people management skills to ensure a happy and motivated team.  Good leadership skills are essential.

The successful applicant must be a self-motivator with excellent communication skills, be capable of taking on a diverse and exciting workload, have the ability to develop and create new initiatives and planting schemes, be flexible and sensitive in respecting the estate’s traditions and have the imagination to retain and adapt these as necessary.  The Head Gardener must be environmentally sensitive in their approach; to include management of wildflower areas, and a site of special scientific interest, and must be prepared to work within organic principles insofar as is practicable.  The Head Gardener must be commercially astute and strategically focussed (budgetary control) and will be expected to seek expert opinion in specialist fields outside their competence where necessary.
