A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and hands-on ‘Head of Productive Gardens’ in Somerset, for an exclusive privately-owned historic estate that opens to the public throughout the year. Visitor attractions include garden tours, cider making, a farm shop, hotel and spa, café and estate walks, with additional attractions being added currently to this varied and unique estate.
A Head of Productive Gardens is sought following the departure of the recent postholder after 3-years’ commitment to the role. Very much a hands-on position, the new postholder will be responsible for productive growing operations across multiple areas including the main public kitchen garden, hotel kitchen garden, market garden, mushroom house and several greenhouses. Applicants for this position should be accomplished, expert growers having successfully run a similar scale of productive garden or commercial growing enterprise. Applicants will ideally have first-hand experience of the above in a busy public garden, will enjoy engaging enthusiastically with garden visitors and guests, and will be happy to lead tours, workshops, talks and events. The estate and component parts of the complex aim to practice horticulture to the highest standard, with the productive garden being central to this objective.
The productive gardens team work closely alongside the hotel and Garden Café chefs to supply fresh seasonal produce to all the food outlets on the estate, as well as the Farm Shop, focussing on high quality as well as the interesting, unusual or locally relevant produce. Reporting to the Director of Horticulture, the Head of Productive Gardens is responsible for a small team (4-6) of permanent gardeners as well as part-time pickers/harvesters and interns.
Applicants for this position should have the following skills and experience:
- First-hand experience of managing a successful productive garden at a high level.
- Experience and proven ability in the management of a team of up to 10 people.
- Broad-ranging horticultural expertise with evidence of appropriate academic qualifications.
- Thorough, precise and well organised.
- An eagerness to provide the highest level of visitor experience.
- The candidate will be a hands-on, hard-working, energetic person with excellent team working skills and the ability to communicate across all levels and to adapt their style to meet individual needs.
- Act as an ambassador and expert to external audiences, i.e. the media and visitors to the estate.
- Adequate IT skills for implementing efficient management systems and records are an essential requisite.
- Full and clean UK driving license.
This is a full-time permanent role with a salary in line with experience and a workplace pension offered. Hours of work are flexible, though typically will include five days out of seven. Holiday entitlement is offered at 30-days per annum including Bank Holidays. Professional membership and reasonable professional development and training costs will be covered by the employer.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a driven and enthusiastic gardener to be part of a team who care for the gardens and grounds surrounding a magnificent property in Somerset.
This is an idyllic setting with stunning views across the valley with many magnificent and unusual specimen trees, as well as sweeping lawns which slope down to a heart shaped lake. There is an enclosed formal garden next to the main property, shrubbery, pergola with wisteria, walled formal garden in an Italianate style, box hedges and topiary work and a rose-bower garden. There are also two vegetable gardens, a cut flower garden, orchard and three heated greenhouses used for propagation. The property is well equipped with a range of garden machinery.
This is a “hands-on” position and the gardens and grounds are maintained to a high standard. Suitable candidates will have some horticultural knowledge and a genuine interest in herbaceous plants, shrubs, basic pruning techniques, and the ability to identify weeds. Experience with propagating, planting, weeding and general plant care of flowers, fruits and shrubs would be beneficial. Spray certificates PA1 and PA6 would also be an advantage but training can be provided by the owners. Applicants with experience in common garden machinery use is desired; strimmers, mowers and blowers.
This position will report to Head Gardener and there are currently two other gardeners working onsite. Candidates should have a positive attitude towards their work and colleagues, be reliable, punctual, physically fit, and well presented. He / She should be prepared to work outside in all weathers and have the determination and drive to get the job done to a high standard. Applicants will ideally hold a full UK driving licence.
This is an exciting opportunity for a newly qualified gardener with some practical experience and wishes to gain further hands on experience working on a large private estate garden to develop their skills and knowledge through practical work and mentoring from senior gardeners.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced hands-on Sole Gardener in a beautifully structured yet naturalistic private garden in Somerset.
The 20-acre gardens consist of a walled garden containing a fruit, vegetable and cut flower garden and a glasshouse. In addition, there are various garden ‘meadows’, orchards, water and herbaceous plantings, raised beds, roses and climber, mature trees, and polytunnel. Significant proportions of the estate have been redesigned by a prominent garden designer and continue to be developed.
The successful candidate will be responsible for 4 acres of garden and will have the opportunity to work closely with the garden designer, and with the owners directly. They will gain an understanding of the requirements of the client/household in respect of seasonal produce and flower arranging, to be provide the house throughout the year. The gardens are managed using organic principles therefore an understanding of plant pests and diseases, and associated bio-control use would be desirable. Knowledge of land management, grassland, hedging, ditching and so forth would also be an advantage. The ability to operate a range of garden machinery is required.
The Sole Gardener will have the support of one / two contractors on site to assist with the mowing and hedge cutting. Applicants should ideally have a minimum of five years’ experience working on a private estate. He / She will have excellent demonstrable horticultural knowledge, plant identification skills and hold a level 2 / 3 horticultural qualification. They be well versed in plant propagation, glasshouse work and polytunnel management and have experience growing fruit and vegetables. The ability to be flexible, collaborative and embrace new ideas is essential.
A 2 or 3 bed accommodation is provided for the successful applicant. Partners and children are welcome. A full drivers’ licence is required as a small van is provided for work purposes and the property is situated in a rural location. The working week will be 38 hours with seasonal variations and holiday allowance is 20 days plus bank holidays.
