An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to manage the award-winning gardens of a beautiful private estate in Cheshire. 

The 26-acre estate consists of formal garden areas with expansive manicured lawns and grass areas with paths throughout, herbaceous borders, topiary, a large pond and lake, a water feature, mixed hedges and borders, kitchen garden, wildflower meadows, with surrounding woodland of young and mature trees. A full irrigation system is in place.

The Head Gardener will be responsible for managing all areas of the garden including the wider estate grounds.  The lawns are maintained by a contractor and there are currently two other gardeners working on site.  The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and prioritising the garden work schedule and continue to work in a safe and secure environment by maintaining compliance with health and safety obligations at all times. 

Applicants must have demonstrable experience of managing garden staff in a private estate environment, excellent plant identification skills, competence with a full range of garden machinery and kitchen gardening experience. Spray certificates would be an advantage along with knowledge of maintaining ponds and water gardens. Due to seasonal variation and planned events, the Head Gardener may be required to be flexible in terms of their working hours.

This beautiful property is currently on the market for sale however, the owners are looking for a full time Head Gardener to take ownership of the garden. Someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required to a high horticultural standard. Ideally, employment will continue with the new owners however, as there is no guarantee, this position will be on a 6-month rolling contract. Either way, when the house is sold, the remaining amount of the 6 months’ salary is guaranteed.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a prestigious family owned and run business based in Cheshire.

Our client owns an impressive portfolio of commercial office, retail and residential properties. All refurbishment and maintenance are carried out by their own team of trades people and a small but select number of long-term contractors. All properties are in close proximity to take a highly personal approach to management.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Skilled Gardener to provide a professional gardening maintenance service to a high horticultural standard across residential and commercial properties in the Altrincham area. The successful candidate will maintain and develop lawns, planting, soil and shrubbery and will undertake hard landscaping within capabilities. He/She will also be expected to assist management in other areas of the business in addition to their core duties. Maintenance of the equipment and stock levels will fall under their remit.

He/She will prioritise workload under the guidance of the Estates Manager to ensure an efficient service is provided and complete tasks at agreed times in safe, professional and efficient manner. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working autonomously on multiple projects. They will be required to complete an annual program of works across the commercial buildings and residential properties and preventative maintenance plans. He/She will liaise with colleagues and tenants to plan work likely to affect the everyday running of the buildings.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants and be fully conversant with planting methods, soil properties, pest control, pruning and cultivation. They should be highly organised with the ability to complete projects to an extremely high standard. A good knowledge of health, safety and welfare together with a sound understanding of COSHH regulations is essential whilst a formal horticultural training qualification to level 3 and PA1/PA6 is preferred. A full clean driving licence is essential for the role.

The ideal candidate will be physically fit and have a ‘can-do’ positive and flexible approach.  They should be able to work on their own initiative but be adaptable to the changing environment. Weekend work may be required to ensure the efficient running of the buildings for which time off in lieu will be offered. Workwear, equipment and personal protective equipment will be provided, and the post-holder is responsible for the maintenance and safety of these items.

Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work alongside other staff and contractors. You should be prepared to work outside in all weathers, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the gardens as required.

A fantastic new position has arisen for a full time Experienced Estate Worker located in the delightful countryside of Cheshire. The 133-acre estate consists of rolling parkland with a large ornamental lake framed by woodland with a folly positioned at the entrance of the estate that mirrors the Jacobean inspired design of the main residence. The long private drive lined with mature lime trees takes you to the house and formal gardens. There are sweeping lawns with a ha-ha give uninterrupted views across the parkland to the lakes beyond.   

The family owned estate comprises of formal gardens as previously mentioned with extensive yew and box topiary including a maze with a hidden water garden. The grounds also contain a rose garden, tennis lawn, and other formal gardens with box parterres and a partly walled kitchen garden. There is a York stone terrace with lavender beds. The farmland is a mixture of pasture and arable. 

The successful applicant will need excellent references and a hard-working approach with reasonable plant and horticultural knowledge, capable of joinery, hard landscaping, extensive ground maintenance including lakes and woodland management. To work to a high standard will be key. In return, the applicant will get the opportunity to be well remunerated.

The successful candidate needs to be trustworthy, conscientious, be able to self-motivated and have a great positive attitude. Someone who can be relied upon to work on their own without the guidance of the estate owner. Must have previous experience working on a large private estate and operating large machinery. A full UK driving licence and chainsaw licence is essential.
