An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable gardener to play a leading role on a beautiful, historic, Arts and Crafts garden near Cirencester. This position would suit a qualified and knowledgeable hands-on gardener with experience at senior level.
The private estate is open to the public at certain times of the year and (during a normal year) attracts approximately 8000 visitors per year, however the family aims to increase this significantly in the future. The property is privately owned and has remained in the same family since its construction in the early 20th century, with the fourth generation now enjoying the estate and playing an active and hands-on role in its maintenance and development. The estate plays host to a small number of events each year.
Set within a small rural village and surrounded by agricultural fields and paddocks, the estate comprises an impressive main building of Cotswold stone with formal gardens extending to 8-acres. The gardens follow a traditional formal English manor house style with generous planting of yew and box topiary, extensive hedging, herbaceous borders, planters, a variety of shrubs, native and exotic tree species, manicured lawns and climbing wisteria. A walled garden is currently undergoing renovation.
The gardens are currently managed by two part-time gardeners, apprentices and volunteers. A requirement therefore exists for a new Senior Gardener to take the lead on garden management and development, which will involve working closely with the owners.
The ideal candidate will possess suitable academic horticultural qualifications as well as extensive hands-on garden management experience on private estates. Applicants must have good knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices, species-specific pruning techniques and the ability to manage a garden budget, supervise part-time gardeners, volunteers and contractors with diplomacy and positivity in order to ensure a happy and effective team. Experience of creating and maintaining topiary, mixed borders, lawns, kitchen gardening and plant propagation, is essential. Applicants must be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery, with spray certificates (PA1/PA6) desirable. This is a hands-on role that requires dedication, excellent time management and good physical fitness.
The Senior Gardener role will primarily involve working with the owners to develop the garden as both a private residence and visitor attraction, by way of maintaining excellent standards of presentation throughout the year. Sole Gardener
A genuinely exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled Sole Gardener to play a key role in the development and ongoing management of a private garden in rural Oxfordshire. Kitchen gardening will be a primary focus of the role, though ornamental horticulture and garden design/development and maintenance will also play a significant part. Applications are sought from academically qualified gardeners with excellent horticultural knowledge and experience of managing/developing large private estate gardens. Passion, energy, discretion and importantly, a good sense of humour, are essential requirements for this role.
Set within 1000-acres of active farmland, the estate is being developed from the ground up. The house sits on a 70-acre plot with fields of sheep and an as-yet undeveloped formal garden. Among other features, shrubs and several beds/borders as well as a sunken garden will need to be designed and built by the Sole Gardener in collaboration with the property owners. The property includes various ponds which offer the opportunity for creative planting and design by the successful candidate.
Following completion of the initial design and implementation of the ornamental gardens, the role will involve maintenance of these areas and any additions and improvements in line with the owner and Sole Gardener’s suggestions.
An on-site farm shop offers high quality traditionally British produce, grown in the immediately surrounding land via traditional methods. Although a small kitchen garden (including 15 raised beds) exists at present, this will continue to grow in line with demand from the farm shop and according to any experimentation in produce diversity. Plans are already in place to plant an orchard as well as three polytunnels, where tomatoes, chillies and other fruit and vegetables may be grown for the farm shop and the house.
Suitable candidates for this role will hold an academic horticultural qualification, ideally at RHS Level 3 or above, though applicants will not be discounted if extensive experience in each of the above areas can be demonstrated through their work history. The Sole Gardener must have strong horticultural knowledge and time management skills with experience in a similar role; either in a position of seniority and/or responsibility as a Sole Gardener. Excellent knowledge of and experience in kitchen gardening are required to ensure the timely production of edible fruit and vegetables throughout the seasons, with minimal waste. Good physical fitness is essential, as is an ability to operate safely a full range of garden machinery and equipment. Experience in species-specific pruning, seasonal garden management, basic plant pest and disease control (including that of fruit and vegetable species), is essential. A full driving licence is required of all applicants.
The successful applicant will have genuine enthusiasm for their work, excellent technical and physical horticultural abilities, a positive and personable character and a good sense of fun. Discretion is also important in this role as client confidentiality is of paramount importance.

This new vacancy is a hands-on role where you will be required to plan, estimate, and implement work schedules and get involved with numerous aspects of looking after the outdoors of the Estate. The successful applicant will find themselves dividing their time between working outdoors with the team on regular maintenance tasks or projects and working in the estate office to carry out necessary administration and paperwork.
The estate is a diverse operation where maintenance of the grounds and landscape is linked with the farming, let property, visitor attraction and events enterprises on the estate and as such, the successful applicant’s work will in part support the success of these departments as well as keeping the appearance of the estate to an acceptable standard.
The nature of the work is wide-ranging and diverse. The role would suit applicants with a background in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or countryside management. A blend of experience in landscape construction (hard and soft), landscape and grounds maintenance, contracts management and horticulture would suit this role. A horticultural qualification would also be beneficial. The estate’s landscape department is equipped with a range of tools and machinery and the successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring machinery is appropriately maintained. The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants and be fully conversant with planting methods, soil properties, pest control, pruning and cultivation. Trees are a major part of the landscape; therefore, a chainsaw certificate is essential for the role; however, if the applicant is willing to acquire the certification, training can be arranged by the employer. Lovania Nurseries Limited is the UK’s largest alpine grower supplying 90% of garden centres across the country. We have a very exciting opportunity now open specifically within the alpine division of the business. We wish to recruit a skilled Head Grower to join and oversee the experienced team. The individual will be joining a very stable and successful family business with a rich heritage built over 4 generations of growing.
The role encompasses the oversight of over 700 different varieties of alpines across 20+ acres of varying production facilities. This starts at a production level, having a collaborative input into daily production and product placement alongside the Operations Manager. Then continues throughout the growth of the plants, implementing a comprehensive ICM programme incorporating pest and disease management, irrigation and feed management.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
-Manage all areas of an ICM (integrated crop management) scheme across all sites. Areas assigned to the growing team, to include water management, environmental management, IPM and crop protection.
-Implement and manage a weed control strategy across department production and sites.
-Manage daily tasks and working hours of the growing team.
-Manage the wastage recording procedure across division working closely with Head of department and QA team.
-All areas of product selection working with the Operations Manager and Head of department including plug choice, supplier choice, growing media and associated raw materials to deliver quality products that achieve set specification and quality throughout.
-Manage daily production space planning and product placement in collaboration with Operations Manager and Head of department
-Oversee the implemented Plug QA and credit system.

-Oversee and implement production methods and techniques to maximise product quality and efficiencies.

Additional to the focus on alpine growing the role oversees the management of over 1/2 million Hardy ornamental container grown plants, including shrubs & herbaceous perennials.
The role also involves the leadership of the growing team currently made up of 4+ skilled growers. These work over various sites and have varying horticultural specialisms. The individual is in charge of staff rotas, delegating tasks, managing workloads, monitoring output, providing training and ensuring the development of each individual.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished alpine Grower with a wealth of experience and knowledge within the specific field. Additional experience working with HNS and herbaceous perennials is essential also. An extensive understanding of the entire alpine production and growing process is required, including an appreciation for all frequently used machinery. A track record within the horticultural sector must be held including relevant training and qualifications. They must be a breast of industry changes including new laws and regulations. A thorough understanding of both indoor and outdoor growing techniques is required.
The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills able to lead and inspire the growing team and collaborate on a daily basis with the Operations Manager. The ability to provide feedback and weekly reports to Managers and the Company Board is essential as well as reporting concerns and working collectively with the QA team. Competent computer skills are needed, including the ability to manage Microsoft Word, excel, outlook plus internal programs. Good organisational skills are essential in order to manage schedules and ensure product specifications are met on time.
