Head Gardener - Live In/Out - EC4467
A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener to become part of a long serving friendly team on a stunning private estate, close to Exeter in East Devon. The role will suit a personable and presentable horticulturist with a flexible and positive attitude towards their work. The position is offered with a modernised three-bedroom semi-detached cottage on site if required, with an associated reduction in the salary stated below.
The former Head Gardener on the estate is leaving amicably after 6 years in the position to train to become a lecturer in horticulture. As a testament to the client, employees enjoy a flat management structure, with most having between 10-30 years’ service.
Set within 100 acres of farmland with lakes, a stream and wetland, the formal gardens cover approximately 8 acres in total. The Georgian house itself is framed by manicured lawns with a walled kitchen garden and small orchard, mixed and herbaceous borders and numerous mature trees. The garden area also contains a swimming pool, a grass and a hard tennis court, greenhouses and polytunnel which will require management to varying degrees. Applicants should have demonstrable experience with the horticultural aspects of the above, though training may be provided in relation to the pool. The surrounding farmland is managed by a Farm Manager, who reports to the Head Gardener in relation to the development of an overall management plan. Applicants must have good plant knowledge, experience with plant propagation, kitchen gardening, garden staff management, and be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery. The Head Gardener is responsible for formulating and administering the health and safety policy on the estate for the benefit of all outdoor staff (in relation to which, training will be arranged as appropriate).
