An excellent opportunity has arisen for a gardener to join a small friendly team on a stunning and unique estate in Oxfordshire, on a full-time basis.  Applicants should be experienced gardeners with a good understanding of seasonal horticultural practices, good plant knowledge and physical fitness.  The successful applicant will work alongside the Head Gardener with the assistance of part-time staff and freelancers.

The garden was designed by Isabel & Julian Bannerman in 1998. It has now become the home of a popular exhibition that attracts over 7,000 visitors every other summer.  There are some smaller open days and group visits but for much of the time, the garden is private and quiet.  This unique garden has featured in books, newspapers and other publications on numerous occasions, with special reference paid to the small gardening team’s unique method of rose pruning.

Garden duties will include pruning, hedge cutting, planting, propagating, mowing, pool care and other tasks. The position will involve physically strenuous work, so good physical fitness is a pre-requisite for this role.  Applicants will need to be confident on ladders and sensible with machinery.  Good attention to detail, a common sense approach, strong communication skills and the ability to take instruction are essential.  The estate utilises organic principles throughout the garden, as well as the no-dig approach to vegetable production.  A significant portion of the role will include rose pruning, so applicants with experience in this area are encouraged to apply.

This position offers plenty of scope for initiative and creativity for the right candidate.  Protective equipment will be provided, as will training as necessary.

Working hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work (with overtime paid).  A full driving licence is required for this position.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to be part of the team at a very prestigious site in London.  This role is an excellent opportunity for a talented and passionate gardener to significantly enhance their standing in the industry.

As part of a dedicated team, you will share responsibility for the 42 acres of gardens; including rose beds, herbaceous boarders, lakeside planting & extensive hedging. The Gardens team is comprised of the Head Gardener, Senior Gardener and five Gardeners, which form a key part of the 26-strong estate team.  The grounds have over 600 mature trees, extensive ornamental gardens and lawns.

Typical horticultural duties include bed preparation, planting, weeding, feeding and pruning across all garden areas. As the successful applicant, you will work under the direction of the Head Gardener and Senior Gardener, and alongside the rest of the team to ensure the highest horticultural standards are maintained for the benefit of all members and their guests.

Candidates must be friendly, polite and diplomatic, with proven horticultural ability and genuine passion.  Good plant identification ability, experience with a range of gardening machinery and a PA1/6 certificate is essential, as is the willingness to learn new skills. You must be able to work well within a team as well as on your own initiative.  References will be required for all applicants for this role.

Working hours consist of a 39-hour week (7am-4pm Monday to Thursday, and 7am-3pm Friday) with scheduled, but not guaranteed overtime on one in three weekends (only 4hrs each day) inclusive of bank holiday weekends when scheduled.

Job description

An enthusiastic and hands-on Skilled Gardener is required to maintain and manage the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated in the South of Wales. 

Our client is a privately owned, 15-acre listed historic garden, where a stream tumbles through the garden passing unusual shrubs and trees, beneath arched bridges built in the eighteenth century. It pours into the calm and reflective ponds, over cascades, alongside spectacular borders within the round walled garden, through the extensive lawns. A greenhouse is on site and the lavish herbaceous borders are complimented by wildflower meadows and striking displays in vast urns and troughs.

The Skilled Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. The garden is open by appointment between April and October to groups as well as one day per year for the National Garden Scheme and hosts a Rare Plant Fair.  The owner meets and leads the guided tours of the garden and the prospective Skilled Gardener will accompany the owner with groups of 20 or more. The greenhouse is used for propagation of plants for the house, therefore experience in propagation from cuttings and seeds to provide summer bedding, container and house plants would be essential.

The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification (ideally to a level 3) and excellent plant identifications skills. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. A minimum of 10 years of gardening experience is desired including charge of planting and maintaining herbaceous borders, ornamental containers, shrubs and trees in arboreta and pruning. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit and willing to work autonomously. PA1 and PA6 chemical application for pest, disease and weed control and CS30 and CS31 chainsaw certificates will be required as well as a full driving licence.

He / She should be prepared to work outside in all weathers observing health and safety at all times, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. The willingness to mow and mulch and the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of a full range of garden machinery such as Kubota tractor and trailer, John Deere ride on mower, Honda pedestrian mower, leaf blower, strimmer, chain and pole saws is essential.

A 2-bed cottage will be available from April 2019 on the Estate for a rental fee of £250 per annum. All bills including council tax will be the responsibility of the tenant. Occasional weekend work to water /ventilate the greenhouse would be required when the owners are travelling. Holiday entitlement is twenty-eight days per year including Public and Bank Holidays.

This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with existing National Trust or RHS experience to manage a beautiful and diverse garden.
