Skilled Gardener - Live Out - EC6506

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to work alongside, and provide guidance to, an existing small team of gardeners on a beautiful private estate in Hertfordshire.  The impressive period property is framed by gardens designed by a highly respected Chelsea Gold Medal winning designer.  The new Skilled Gardener, along with the team, will liaise with the Head Gardener on a regular basis and impart their horticultural knowledge to the team from a hands-on perspective.

The privately-owned estate encompasses approximately 40-acres, of which five are gardens maintained to a very high standard.  The gardens are open once a year at the end of May as part of the NGS scheme, and as testament to their popularity, have broken the regional record for the most successful turnout in a day.  The varied site includes a ¾ acre walled garden, a 4 ¼ acre ornamental garden with water features, trees, shrubs, perennials and a long list of additional elements, ornamental plants and areas beyond.  Glasshouses on site are used for propagation, growing vegetables, overwintering citrus and a few ornamentals.  The remainder of the estate encompasses paddocks/ménage, a tennis court, parkland and a swimming pool.  The garden team are noted for their small but much-praised production of fruit and vegetables, of which some are used for home-made preserves and juices. The estate also provides a home for various animals; a small herd of Dexter cattle, Texel sheep, chickens and horses.

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate gardeners who possess excellent horticultural knowledge and a positive, friendly character.  Chemical spray certificate and chainsaw licenses are both desirable, but not essential.  The successful applicant will be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills and excellent horticultural knowledge.  Applicants should also have demonstrable experience on horticulturally diverse private estates, academic horticultural qualifications and good knowledge of plant propagation, kitchen gardening, glasshouse work, specialist pruning techniques, and particularly of ornamental horticulture and of efficient seasonal garden management.  Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is necessary, as is the ability to provide guidance to colleagues with diplomacy and a positive attitude.

A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role (as accommodation is not provided).  Applicants should possess genuine enthusiasm for horticulture and gardens in general, and should have a ‘can-do’ attitude and a good sense of humour.

Lawn Specialist / Grounds Person - Live Out - EC6523

Lawn Specialist / Grounds Person required

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced grounds person, with specialist knowledge of turf/lawn care, to join a team of eight gardeners on a prestigious Tom Stuart-Smith designed estate in Oxfordshire.

The historic 74-acre property, currently being extensively re-designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, boasts an arboretum and surrounding parkland with two large lakes, a lake garden, sunken garden, woodland and a woodland garden.  A two-acre walled garden and extensive herbaceous borders are also managed by the team of gardeners, with the entirety of the garden areas falling under management of the Head Gardener.  The gardens are maintained to the highest standard and as such, applicants should be able to demonstrate impeccable attention to detail and a genuine passion for their profession.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the maintenance and improvement of all the lawns within the estate.  Applicants must have a strong and demonstrable background working specifically with lawns and their management, from a health and aesthetics perspective.  The current in-house program includes aeration, scarification, top dressing, over-seeding, pest, disease and weed control, all of which will be the responsibility of the successful candidate.

Applicants must be fully conversant in all aspects of garden machinery in relation to lawn/turf management, i.e. cylinder mowers, ride on mowers, rotary mowers, tractors, strimmers etc.  Academic horticultural qualifications in turf/lawn care are welcome but not necessary, as experience and a clear working knowledge of each aspect of the role will take priority.   Candidates with PA1/PA6 spraying certificates, in addition to the above experience in lawn care, are desirable.  Attention to detail is paramount in this role, so dedication, commitment and genuine pride in a job well done is required of all applicants.

This is an excellent opportunity for a talented and enthusiastic person to showcase their skills on one of the country’s most prestigious estates on a permanent long-term basis.  The successful candidate will receive up to £25,000 per year (dependent on experience) plus a pension scheme and discretionary bonus.  Working hours are 08:00 – 17:00 between 1st March and 1st of November, and 08:00 – 16:00 between 1st November and 1st March.
