The project

The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden was identified as a special place for a new landscape project in 2010. The primary focus is on flora from temperate biomes around the world highlighting the importance of biodiversity and the effects of climate change on plants, adaptation and resilience. We endeavour to  collaborate with global partners and provide education and research opportunities encouraging dynamic thinking and the conservation of biological diversity. The project will provide a Living Collection, landscapes and experiences for people to enjoy for a range of uses from recreation to research.

The role

A Nursery Supervisor is now needed to help with the development and management of professional nursery facilities and practices. The successful candidate will work closely with a Botanical Lead in developing a nursery to support the propagation and cultivation of diverse plant stock to establish the  Living Collection in a range of international ecosystems and specially designed landscapes. The role also involves maintaining accurate records and monitoring plant inventory using the designated IT systems with a focus on producing robust, landscape-ready botanical specimens, sharing data and contributing to the ongoing development of nursery infrastructure.

The majority of the Living Collection will be grown from seed and the Nursery supervisor will need to have considerable experience in germination techniques and growing on nursery stock. Previous experience in working with others to develop nursery facilities using traditional and innovative means is also essential to help with creating a fully functioning, professional plant nursery. The role requires someone with significant knowledge of pest and disease management including hygiene, quarantine and monitoring to ensure that all phytosanitary procedures are in accordance with the Living Collection Policy.

SBG shares research information with other institutions and the Nursery Supervisor needs to be well organised with an inquisitive mind and an eye for detail who is expected to gather and disseminate data digitally, participate in research and to run programs ensuring SOPs are followed.

The successful candidate should be qualified in a relative subject to at least HND level with a minimum of 5 years professional experience. A full UK driving licence is needed to perform all required duties.
