Sole Gardener required

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified hands-on Gardener in Charge to manage and maintain a beautiful and unique 10-acre private estate near Cheltenham, with some very unusual features.

The stunning family garden is south facing and made up of ten different character areas consisting of manicured lawns, terraced front lawn, Italianate terrace, a formal olive garden, herbaceous/mixed borders, a fruit orchard and three different character pools: The Bear Pool, The Cave Pool & The Folly Pool linked by a natural stream through a wild garden area.

The ideal candidate will have good horticultural knowledge and the ability to apply this to plant selection in respect of each character area.  The work will involve maintenance and enhancement of the existing garden and as such, the position would suit a practical, knowledgeable and physically fit horticulturist with a keen eye for detail.

Applicants will be positive and proactive gardeners with self-motivation and the drive for the hands-on aspect of gardening. A long term and reliable contractor comes in to assist with the basic gardening e.g. mowing the lawn, cutting hedges and weeding along with other support staff as and when necessary.

The Gardener in Charge will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and have considerable gardening/horticultural experience. Good plant identification skills are essential, and propagation skills desired as there is a greenhouse on site.  Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable though not essential, as training can be provided. A wide range of garden machinery and equipment is provided, with which the gardener must be experienced and adept as well as having associated knowledge of health and safety. A driving licence is essential. General maintenance / handyperson knowledge would be an advantage as assistance may occasionally be required such as fixing fencing and laying slabs.

The successful candidate must be happy to work in all weather conditions, tidy in their work, proud of developing estate gardens to the highest standard and comfortable with giving direction to the contractor.  Organisation and the ability to manage your daily work schedules effectively are important.
