A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable gardener to maintain a beautiful private garden near Godalming, on a part-time (2-3 days/week) self-employed basis. This vacancy is open to driven and skilled Gardeners / Horticulturists in the locality.
The Grade 2 listed 16th century house is surrounded by an attractive and highly varied 5-acre garden. The English country garden is highly diverse and comprises a mixture of lawns, meadows, wildflowers and traditional flower beds, orchard, vegetable and cutting garden, greenhouse, spinney, stream, pond and lake. Features include swimming pool, tennis court and solar power.
The current gardener will be retiring soon, and the new gardener will be taking over 2-3 days per week, to be agreed. The opportunity would suit a gardener with a wide range of skills, who is keen to help the owners maintain and develop the biodiverse garden. It is a sole position focusing on the garden whilst liaising with other workers onsite: tree surgeons, pool maintainers, lake and pond maintenance and occasionally working with a specialist garden designer.
Applicants will have a minimum of 5 to 10 years’ experience working on private estates and will ideally hold a horticultural qualification. The successful applicant will be an all-round gardener with a range of gardening skills including specialist pruning and hedge cutting. Physical fitness and enthusiasm are essential as this is a hands-on role. Some knowledge of, and an interest in promoting wildlife and diversity would be beneficial but not a requirement.
Handyman experience e.g. fence building., basic electrical and machinery skills would be advantageous as the owners have mowers, a mechanical scythe and an irrigation system. They live at the property part time and therefore seek a highly trustworthy and personable individual to occasionally assist with checking in on the security, deliveries and provide access to builders and other tradesmen.
Although the position is part time, the owners are looking for a permanent gardener looking for a long-term opportunity to manage and maintain their beautiful garden for the foreseeable future. They hope the gardener would become a friend of the family with time.
