Horticultural Grower – Nursery Hertfordshire

THE ROLE
Reporting directly to the Head Grower, you will play an important role in the successful production of high-quality bedding plants for supply to the garden centre industry.
This is a hands-on commercial growing role for someone who is passionate about plants and takes pride in producing consistently high-quality crops.
You will work closely with the Head Grower and wider production team, taking responsibility for the day-to-day husbandry and development of crops and helping to ensure they are produced to the highest possible standard and ready for sale at the required time.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Undertaking all aspects of plant husbandry and commercial crop production.
- Monitoring crops regularly and identifying issues at an early stage.
- Maintaining high standards of plant quality throughout the growing cycle.
- Managing pest, disease and weed control programmes.
- Monitoring irrigation, nutrition and general crop requirements.
- Ensuring crops are grown to the required specification and timescale.
- Reporting on crop progress and highlighting potential issues to the Head Grower and sales team.
- Helping to plan daily and weekly production tasks according to crop requirements.
- Maintaining accurate growing records and completing essential administration.
- Ensuring all work is carried out in accordance with relevant hygiene, health and safety procedures.
- Working collaboratively with the wider production team.
- Supporting other areas of the nursery when required.
- Working at our second nearby site when required.
- Weekend work will be a requirement of the role
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with previous experience in a commercial horticultural environment.
Most importantly, you will have a genuine passion for plants and take pride in producing high-quality crops.
You will need to:
- Have a minimum of 2 years’ relevant professional horticultural experience.
- Have experience of commercial plant production, ideally including bedding plants.
- Have excellent plant knowledge and a strong understanding of plant husbandry.
- Be able to recognise and respond to pest, disease and crop-quality issues.
- Be organised, reliable and able to work to production deadlines.
- Have excellent attention to detail.
- Be able to adapt to the changing demands of a busy commercial nursery.
- Be able to work under pressure and prioritise daily and weekly tasks.
- Be a good communicator and work effectively as part of a team.
- Be computer literate and comfortable completing basic crop records and administration.
- Have a proactive approach and be willing to learn and develop your skills.
- Take pride in your work and be committed to producing the best plants possible.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Full UK driving licence.
- PA1 and PA6 spray certificates.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
The following would be advantageous but are not essential:
- Experience in growing bedding plants in a commercial environment.
- Forklift certificate.

Salary: Up to £38,000 negotiable depending on experience
