Head Gardener – EC8064 – This position has now been filled

From English Country Gardeners

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and experienced Head Gardener to manage and maintain the private gardens on a large historic sporting estate near Leicester.

The family seat has been here for 800 years, and the Grade II* listed Georgian Hall sits within 110 acres of Parkland and 8 acres of gardens. The gardens include a scented garden, shrub rose garden, herbaceous and ericaceous borders, water features, walled kitchen garden, cut flower garden and four glasshouses. The kitchen garden supplies the house with fruit and vegetables. There is also a woodland garden and orchard that are currently being restored and enhanced.

The garden is private, only opening to the public on a few occasions a year for charity. The Head Gardener will be managing up to two gardeners and therefore will have good awareness of Health and Safety and the execution thereof. In keeping with the family commitment to the environment, it is desired to make the garden more self-sufficient in areas such as composting, leaf mould, stock plants, cutting and propagation and the reduction in the use of chemicals and the Head Gardener will lead these initiatives.

The ideal candidate will hold a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and a minimum of 10 years of experience working in a similar environment. He / She will have excellent plant knowledge, experience with designing borders and implementing plans as they will be executing the final phase of the owner’s vision and long-term plan for the garden. Spray certificates PA1/PA6, chainsaw certificates, maintenance, crosscutting and felling and first aid qualifications are required for the role, however training will be given if required. The successful candidate will have experience with propagation from cuttings and grafting as well as greenhouse management experience especially with unheated greenhouses growing camellias.

Additional responsibilities occasionally include assisting in the preparation of the garden for charity functions and church fund raising events, preparing and supplying firewood to the Hall in the winter and coordinating with the house to supply vegetables and cut flowers for the family, shoot lunches and other functions. A full driving licence is essential and experience with tractors and trailers would be advantageous. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role.

Accommodation is provided for the successful candidate in the form of a 2/3 bedroom cottage within walking distance of the job location. Council Tax is paid by the employers and all other bills are paid by the tenant. Shopping centres are within 2 miles.
