The Role

This role requires a capable Irrigation Maintenance Technician to take responsibility for the servicing, fault diagnosis, repair, maintenance and improvement of irrigation systems across the Estate, Park, Gardens and the surrounding parkland landscape.

The jobholder will have strong fault-finding skills, a proactive approach to system maintenance, and the ability to deliver reliable and efficient irrigation solutions across multiple sites. This is a hands-on technical role, working closely with the Head Gardener and Team Leaders to ensure irrigation systems operate efficiently, safely and in compliance with relevant regulations and best practice. Occasionally situations may arise that require the jobholder to perform other duties or tasks as may be requested by the Estate’s Management Team.

Key Responsibilities

As Irrigation Technician you will:

Irrigation System Maintenance:

  • Lead the maintenance, servicing, fault diagnosis and repair of irrigation systems across all designated sites.
  • Carry out ongoing maintenance, diagnostics, commissioning, repair and winterisation of automatic irrigation systems throughout the growing season.
  • Ensure irrigation systems operate efficiently, safely and in compliance with relevant regulations and best practice.
  • Support the continual improvement and modernisation of irrigation infrastructure, including the implementation of smart and water-saving technologies where appropriate.

Water Management:

  • Monitor water consumption and usage across gardens, landscapes, lake and cascade systems, and rainwater harvesting infrastructure, including glasshouse storage tanks.
  • Prepare and maintain annual condition, performance and water usage reports.

Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Head Gardener and Team Leaders to schedule maintenance activities, prioritise urgent repairs and minimise disruption to operations.
  • Provide technical advice and communicate effectively with colleagues regarding irrigation performance, maintenance requirements and water efficiency initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the garden team to ensure efficient operations and minimise disruption to garden activities.

Attention to Detail:

  • Regularly inspect irrigation systems across all designated sites to identify faults, maintenance requirements and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure irrigation equipment and infrastructure is maintained to a high standard and is operating reliably and efficiently.

Health, Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure all your activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Read and understand any relevant risk assessments and follow / implement safety protocols as directed by the Head Gardener and Team Leaders.

Ensure that the gardens, landscapes and wider Estate benefit from reliable, efficient and well-maintained irrigation systems, regardless of the weather or any operational challenges that may arise!

Essential requirements include:

  • Experience in the maintenance, repair and installation of commercial irrigation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair both electrical and mechanical irrigation faults.
  • Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities across multiple locations.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Experience using computers for reporting, record keeping and email communication.

Desirable skills include:

  •  Relevant horticultural, irrigation or engineering qualification.
  • Technical knowledge of irrigation controllers, valves, sensors and pop-up irrigation systems, with manufacturers such as Hunter, Rain Bird and Toro.
  •  Knowledge of water efficiency regulations and smart irrigation technologies.

Working Conditions

This position requires physical activity, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods. The

Irrigation Technician will work in various areas of the Estate and may be required to work flexible hours, typically Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend and out-of-hours working required to respond to emergency irrigation repairs
