Our client is an established facilities management company based in North Yorkshire. They provide landscape/grounds maintenance services to private and commercial properties throughout North Yorkshire. They pride themselves on providing the highest standard of service and have a loyal and established portfolio of clients. They currently seek an experienced Head Grounds Person to take responsibility for the day to day management of various grounds maintenance sites.

Job Brief

Our client is looking for someone to further increase the quality of the service they provide. The appointed candidate will be responsible for managing a team as well as ensuring all operations are completed to correct horticultural standards. You would report directly to the Managing Director but would be responsible for the day to day running of your jobs, this role is a ‘hands on’ requiring managerial capabilities. The successful candidate will be friendly, motivated and reliable, supporting the Grounds team to ensure their development is properly maintained, while adhering to health and safety procedures.

Duties will include:

-Liaise with clients and suppliers

-Lawn care, hedge cutting, edging and pruning shrubs

-Implementation of planting schemes, soft landscaping when instructed

-Pest control

-Organising work schedules

-Maintenance of equipment

-Keeping your vehicle tidy and equipped with all the materials and equipment required to do your jobs.

Key Skills

Candidates should possess a horticultural qualification; have excellent understanding of commercial and communal landscape maintenance and have previous experience with leading a team. The ideal candidate will, have strong communication skills and able to liaise with clients on a regular basis.

PA1/PA6 spray certificates and a full UK driving license are essential. 

Hours are 7.30 – 18.00 (depending on season)

Job Brief

With the continued growth of the company, as Contracts Manager you will be responsible for delivering a number of high-quality soft landscaping contracting services valued on average, around £500K. The types of contracts you’ll be managing will be soft landscaping projects based on construction sites for Schools, Hospitals and Business Parks located in the West Yorkshire area.

For this position, if you are currently an existing Contracts Manager, Foreman or Assistant Contracts Manager with knowledge and experience in Landscaping and/or Horticulture and working on construction sites, please apply.

Responsibilities

Landscaping or Horticulture knowledge and experience.

Management of large-scale landscaping projects.

Liaising with clients, supervision of assigned personnel and contractors.

Ensuring compliance with all aspects of Health & Safety, environmental and quality standards.

Ensuring projects are delivered to clients' expectations and on budget - monitoring and managing cost control effectively.

Effectively recruiting the right people within your division including direct labour and subcontractors.

Identifying the ongoing development needs of your team via formal and informal processes.

Procurement of materials and any subcontracted works to within the forecasted budget.

Assisting with business development and supporting our Estimating team where required.

Requirements

Already an experienced Contracts Manager within the land-based sector, you will have a wealth of experience in delivering high quality projects and principal contractor project management, in a timely and efficient manner.

Good contractual awareness including experience of managing works in accordance with NEC3, NEC4, JCT & JCLI forms of contract.

A professional qualification in landscaping, horticulture, or other land-based industry.

Commercial acumen including accurate cost control, efficient procurement, production of timely valuations, pricing of variations and compensation events.

Experience of Construction (Design & Management) Regulations and the preparation of quality plans and safe systems of work.

A motivated, driven, and flexible approach comes naturally to you.

About you

The successful candidate will have excellent influencing and interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and high attention to detail, consultative approach to their work. Organisational and time management skills are also required along with a full driving licence.

RHS Horticultural Advisors directly support RHS members and the gardening public to fulfil the RHS Vision of “enriching everyone’s lives through plants and making the UK a greener and more beautiful place” As a Horticultural Advisor you will be responsible for delivering the very best gardening advice by email, letter, phone, online and face-to-face both at Harlow Carr and at RHS Flower Shows and events. You will provide guidance to RHS members, garden visitors, staff, students, apprentices and volunteers and help deliver outstanding customer experience.

As well as excellent horticultural knowledge (including identification, selection and care of garden plants), the successful applicants will have sound scientific understanding, excellent computer skills, a desire to learn and a passion for helping people. They will be strong team players and will be keen to take responsibility for their own work and projects. They will also be outstanding verbal and written communicators who will relish participating in creating press and magazine articles, publishing web pages, podcasts, social media and giving talks and demonstrations.

Applicants should be educated to degree level (or equivalent) in horticulture or a related field and have relevant experience in a customer facing garden or horticultural organisation.

Experience of writing or broadcasting about gardening would be a big advantage.

Sole Gardener

An enthusiastic and passionate Sole Gardener is sought on a full-time permanent basis to maintain and further develop a beautiful private estate near Beverley in East Yorkshire.

The estate is approximately 20 acres and includes a number of fields grazed by sheep, long tree lined drive, wooded areas, hedging, and 3acres of formal gardens around the house. The formal garden includes lawns, box and yew hedging, mixed borders, a potager, fruit trees, wildflowers and a pond.

The owners have established the gardens over the last few years and now seek a driven and energetic Sole Gardener to bring the gardens and grounds up to their full potential.

Applicants must be experienced and knowledgeable gardeners, ideally with a recognised horticultural qualification and previous experience working in a similar role as Sole Gardener on a private estate. A good knowledge of plants and a broad range of technical skills will be required as well as a desire and ability to work to a high standard.

It is important that applicants are enthusiastic and self-motivated and able to work on their own initiative. Applicants should have a range of practical skills and be able to turn their hands to a number of jobs, such as managing the grassland and woodland and keeping the barn and fencing in good order.  Ideally, candidates should have the ability to carry out basic maintenance on a wide range of garden machinery. A driving licence is essential as are spray certificates. A chainsaw certificate is desirable but not essential for the role.

Flexibility is important and duties include taking responsibility for the house and gardens in the owner’s absence.
