Our client is looking for an experienced tree nursery manager to lead the existing team within the nursery, propagating native broadleaf trees with the intention of establishing a 30,000-acre native woodland. This is an exciting opportunity to work for an exciting and ambitious charity working to help reverse centuries of woodland decline and plant one of the largest forests in England.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, budgeting, and marketing, as well as the hands-on day-to-day practical delivery of all managerial functions, including hiring and training staff and liaising with customers. The role also requires running a small cell grown production facility managed using organic principles. This role is supported by an Assistant Tree Nursery Manager and together will establish the tree nursery as a social enterprise, providing employment opportunities for local people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Working with local charities the intention is to offer supported internships for young people with SEND.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the day-to-day processes involved with the growth of bare root trees, determining the types and quantities to be grown based on targets, projected sales and executive directives. The nursery manager will be responsible for the planning and management of irrigation, soil conditions and pests and disease. The client is keen to employ an experienced horticulturist / plantsperson who will be confident responding to customer requests and enquiries offering exemplary customer service.

Ideally candidates will have significant experience working within a commercial tree nursery, with good staff management skills, from recruitment and selection to managing and motivating a successful team. Applicants will ideally have strong horticultural knowledge from selecting seed, to growing and nurturing tree stock, including a detailed knowledge of plant production, soil, plant nutrition and growing techniques. The nursery currently utilises pesticides to manage pest and disease on the nursery however they are committed to chemical pesticide reduction wherever possible.

In addition to proven practical experience in a similar role, candidates would ideally hold their PA1 & PA6 certification along with driving licence, tractor driving competency and associated certification. References and an enhanced DBS will be required.

Normal working hours will be 40 per week 8:00am till 17:00 Monday to Friday, however some out of office hours may be required for which time off in lieu will be given. Holiday allowance is 28 days plus bank holidays.
