An attractive opportunity has arisen near Swaffham, Norfolk, for a hands-on gardener with all rounded handyperson skills, to maintain the gardens and assist on the wider estate of this beautiful private property. The vacancy is available as a live-in option with accommodation provided at a reduced rate in addition to the stated salary. Applicants will primarily be experienced gardeners and possess the ability and willingness to carry out additional estate maintenance duties when necessary.
The Gardener will be responsible for maintaining the 3 acres garden surrounding the main house which includes a topiary garden, main borders, walled vegetable garden, wood garden and lawns. The successful applicant will have experience and knowledge of pruning, propagation, weeding, sowing of seeds, planting, lawncare, hedge cutting and strimming etc. Spray certificate PA1 /PA6 and chainsaw certificate is required but the owners would be happy to support the successful applicant through the courses.
Additional duties and responsibilities include collecting of leaves in winter, collecting eggs and feeding chickens, filling of eco wood boiler, maintenance of swimming pool, feeding and walking the dogs when owners are away (2-gun dogs & 3 terriers) and general basic handyperson skills would be an advantage. A driving licence is essential as occasional driving of owners to and from events/airport may be required.
The successful applicant will need to be flexible, energetic and trustworthy, with a genuine passion for gardening. Candidates must have demonstrable hands-on garden experience, preferably within an estate environment. Applicants will work closely with the owner on the gardening and will be able to take direction where necessary, but also be able to work under their own initiative. Experience with the use and basic maintenance of garden machinery such as cylinder mowers and ride on mowers is important.
A competitive salary of £27,000 is provided for the successful applicant along with accommodation provided at the reduced rate. The accommodation is either a flat or a 3 bedroomed cottage that could be available to the right applicant depending on their circumstances. Council tax and bills are the tenant’s responsibility.

What it's like to work here
You’ll be working in a team of five gardeners led by a Head Gardener. You’ll line management an Assistant Gardener and an Apprentice and oversee the work of the rest of the team and numerous volunteers.

What you'll be doing
You’ll be operational lead for the team, overseeing day to day management and maintenance of the gardens. You’ll input into budgets and visitor operations, programming and interpretation, volunteer and community engagement. You’ll work closely with the Head Gardener to ensure high standards and retention of significance. Much of the job will be outside and hands-on with the team.
You’ll also work closely with other departments across the estate to ensure a quality experience for visitors. There will be opportunities to project manage, improve nature and fundraise for important conservation works. We are entering a phase of planning and development for the long-term future of the gardens which you will contribute to.
Some weekend and bank holiday working are a requirement of this role. We anticipate this being at least one weekend day a month and participating in our Property Incident Coordinator rota.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the garden to a high standard and will work closely with the owner to enhance the garden further. The nursery is a supplier to garden centres, delivering high quality plants to independents and large groups. Production at the nursery is split into two main categories: indoor/greenhouse and outdoor container grown stock. The technical/spray operator will be responsible for all the plants on the 30-arce site, which is largely outside with 1.8-hectarces under glass. The plant range consists of conifers, deciduous and evergreen shrubs, ornamental and roses. Supplied pot sizes range from 1.4 litres to 10 litres.
The successful applicant will be responsible for weed control, pest control, spraying and biological application. Applicants for this role should have large-scale nursery experience, strong plant and technical nursery production knowledge, PA1, 2 and 6. PA4 would be of benefit but is not essential.
