A pivotal focus of this role is to drive the sustainability agenda and coordinate and communicate all activity across the business.

Additional roles and responsibilities include:

  • To improve the sales and profitability of the department ensuring budgets are achieved
  • To oversee the efficient running of the department on a day-to-day basis
  • To recruit as necessary to meet the agreed head count
  • To manage the team on a day-to-day basis, their motivation and morale
  • To carry out the agreed procedures for Health and Safety
  • To hold regular weekly meetings with the team to improve performance
  • To actively promote sundries, encouraging link sales and up-sales wherever possible
  • To conduct weekly site walks with the General Manager
  • To attend trade shows, industry events and other garden centres as required

The working hours for the position are 42 hours per week to include bank holidays and alternate weekends with a set day off in the week. The gardens at Blickling are an important part of a 4,600 acre historic estate. The 55-acre gardens include a newly developed orchard and walled garden, wilderness woodland, highly significant ancient trees, temple and orangery, and iconic yew hedges framing the front of the Jacobean hall. The gardens feature attractive seasonal planting, including thousands of daffodils in spring and formal beds in the parterre garden designed by Norah Lindsay.

What it's like to work here

You’ll be working in a team of five gardeners led by a Head Gardener. You’ll line management an Assistant Gardener and an Apprentice and oversee the work of the rest of the team and numerous volunteers.

Conservation, climate action, wellbeing and welcoming everyone are at the heart of what we do. We are a supportive team who work working collaboratively across departments and externally to achieve our goals. We are looking for someone who shares these ideals and ambitions.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be operational lead for the team, overseeing day to day management and maintenance of the gardens. You’ll input into budgets and visitor operations, programming and interpretation, volunteer and community engagement. You’ll work closely with the Head Gardener to ensure high standards and retention of significance. Much of the job will be outside and hands-on with the team.

You’ll also work closely with other departments across the estate to ensure a quality experience for visitors. There will be opportunities to project manage, improve nature and fundraise for important conservation works. We are entering a phase of planning and development for the long-term future of the gardens which you will contribute to.

Some weekend and bank holiday working are a requirement of this role.  We anticipate this being at least one weekend day a month and participating in our Property Incident Coordinator rota.

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for someone imaginative, collaborative and who loves to share ideas, as well as having the following experience:

-Managing or leading a team of staff or volunteers

-Excellent organisational and communication skills

-RHS Level 3, NVQ 3 or equivalent experience

-Excellent understanding of horticultural techniques, plant identification, practical gardening and use of garden machinery

-An understanding of Health & Safety and sustainable garden practices

Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has become available for a passionate and motivated Sole Gardener to maintain and continue to enhance the stunning gardens of an Estate in Norfolk. The role is open to applicants looking for either 4 or 5 days on a permanent basis.

The estate covers about 30 acres of land with the majority being woodland with mixed species, parkland mainly with mature oak and ash and fields. The grade I listed property is covered in climbing roses and is surrounded by a 1-acre garden that consists of formal terraces, lawns, extensive wisteria walkway, a deep mixed border beside a gravel path leading down to the river, a hazel nuttery, a knot garden of dwarf box, high yew hedges, yew and box topiary and a ha-ha. There is also a pond, a walled garden with fruit trees, a kitchen garden, herb garden and two greenhouses that are currently not in use.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Sole Gardener with a real passion for horticulture looking for a long term and rewarding role on a beautiful estate. The Sole Gardener will be responsible for the maintenance of the garden to a high standard and will work closely with the owner to enhance the garden further. He / She will ideally have the enthusiasm and excellent plant knowledge as well as specialist knowledge such as pest and disease control as the owners wish to keep the garden as organic as possible.

The ideal candidate will hold a level 2 academic horticultural qualification and have experience managing a private estate garden to a high horticultural standard. Experience in the use and maintenance of garden machinery including chainsaw licence is essential. A driving licence is required for the role.

Once in the post, the successful candidate will also be responsible for a labourer when on-site.

Job Description:

-Organising and carrying out individual hard and soft landscaping projects efficiently, to brief and on-time. 

-Ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction through excellent customer service, good communication and   

 delivering the desired end result, Planning and setting-out of site.  

-Manual hard labour such as paving areas in natural stone, bricklaying, block paving, fencing, installation of   

 water features and pond construction etc.  

-Manual soft labour such as planting and laying turf.  

-Using excavators and diggers.  

-Effective supervision and management of a labourer; motivate, lead and set by example.  

-Upholding a high level of Health & Safety on-site, ensuring projects are carried out in a safe manner and that   

 final construction is safe for customer use

-Working effectively within a small team, upholding excellent communication and using initiative.  

-Finishing and final touches on landscaping projects in order to uphold customer expectations; using your keen eye for detail to ensure the final result is pleasing and on-brief

Key Skills:

-Considerable experience in hard landscaping, bricklaying and paving especially.

-Experience in more traditional crafts like flint walls would be desirable.

-Experience with soft landscaping i.e. preparing ground for turf laying and planting etc.

-A professional and approachable nature with leadership qualities. 

-Full UK driving license with the ability to drive Ford Transit Tipper Vans or similar. 

-A strong awareness of Health & Safety guidelines.  

-Any experience using mini excavators and dumpers. 

-Strong customer-service skills; the ability to forge trusting relationships with customers

-Physically fit to undertake the manual elements for landscaping.

An excellent opportunity has arisen at a large and well-respected nursery in Norfolk for a Spray Operator to join the team on a permanent full-time basis.  The nursery is a supplier to garden centres, delivering high quality plants to independents and large groups. The company is forward-thinking and growing, with innovations leading to an increase in business and a new opportunity for an experienced professional to utilise their skills in a constructive environment.

Production at the nursery is split into two main categories: indoor/greenhouse and outdoor container grown stock.  The technical/spray operator will be responsible for all the plants on the 30-arce site, which is largely outside with 1.8-hectarces under glass. The plant range consists of conifers, deciduous and evergreen shrubs, ornamental and roses.  Supplied pot sizes range from 1.4 litres to 10 litres. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for weed control, pest control, spraying and biological application.  Applicants for this role should have large-scale nursery experience, strong plant and technical nursery production knowledge, PA1, 2 and 6.  PA4 would be of benefit but is not essential.  All applicants must have experience in a similar role.

Experienced Gardener

A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener on a beautiful private garden in central Norfolk on a live in or out, permanent basis.  The successful applicant will work alongside the owners and existing full-time Groundsman.  Applicants for this vacancy must have extensive hands-on experience working in a large private garden with comprehensive knowledge of a range of garden plants and their maintenance.  Applicants must above all be hardworking and physically fit, with the willingness to contribute to the smooth running and development of the garden and estate.

The five-acre formal gardens contain herbaceous borders, shrub borders, a kitchen garden with fruit trees (including pleached limes) and extensive yew & beech hedges.  The estate utilises the greenhouses and tunnels on site to propagate most of their own plants for the borders and pots, as well as some fruit and select vegetables, cut flowers and interesting plants for the main house.

The garden is surrounded by a ten-acre arboretum and farm.  The Experienced Gardener should be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and be willing to assist the Groundsman as required.  Applicants must be willing and able to carry out all aspects of estate gardening including pruning (some from ladders), hedge cutting, some plant propagation, planting, weeding, grass mowing and general garden maintenance duties.  Possession of spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and a chainsaw certificate would be beneficial, and a full UK driving licence essential.  Applicants must be physically fit, non-smokers, have excellent horticultural knowledge, and preferably, academic horticultural qualifications at RHS level 2 or above as well as being someone with a love of gardening who takes pride in their work.

Applicants must be flexible insofar as estate gardening is concerned, i.e. be able to manage/assist with common minor estate duties, able to work autonomously and be willing to do some watering at weekends.  The opportunity exists for a housekeeper to take on some part-time work and as such, suitable couples are also encouraged to apply.

A three-bedroom house is available (strictly no smoking) for the successful applicant (and family if applicable) at a nominal rent of £250 per annum.  The applicant would be expected to pay their own council tax and utilities.  A well-behaved dog is welcome, but cats are not permitted due to the abundant bird population.
