Part time Gardener

A new vacancy has arisen on a large country garden near the town of Market Harborough in Leicestershire for a Gardener to utilise their horticultural knowledge and experience on a part-time (3-days/week) self-employed basis.  The property owner is a keen Gardener, and the successful candidate will be working closely with them to manage and maintain their garden to a high standard.

The 10-acre property is mainly paddocks with a contractor maintaining the grounds. The 1.5-acre mature garden surrounding the house is beautifully maintained and consists of lawns, mixed beds and borders with a large rhododendron bed, a patio with potted plants, hedges and various mature and specimen trees. The lower garden is ¼ of an acre on a bank and an opportunity for creative input from the Gardener if they would be interested.

The gardens are currently maintained by local contractors; however, the property owner is looking for a skilled gardener to focus on their garden two or three days per week. Should the successful applicant wish to take on more hours, the owners would be happy for them to do so to assist with the maintenance of the paddocks. Duties will include weeding, pruning, mowing, splitting plants, deadheading, putting the garden to bed for the winter, leaf clearing in the autumn, hedge cutting, composting and splitting wood in the winter.

Applicants will have previous experience working on a large country garden and ideally hold PA1/PA6 spray certificates.  He / She will be organised, able to plan and prioritise and work to a high standard.  Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work alongside other contractors, and with the property owner on a regular basis. A willingness to work outside in all weathers, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required, as is an ability to operate a range of garden machinery.

This is a hands-on and enjoyable role, so applicants must have a good level of fitness as well as genuine enthusiasm for the garden and wider estate in general as well as a positive character overall. Due to the rural location of the property, a driving licence and own vehicle is required.

SALARY:        £20 / hour for 3 days per week

Job Description:

Duties and responsibilities would include the following:

-Travelling nationwide as part of a small team to install the tree planting schemes

-Moving, planting and potting trees and shrubs, which are 3-6 metres in size.

-Preparing plants at the nursery for transportation.

-Providing a professional and efficient service for the customers.

-During quieter periods, working on the nursery where required.

Key Skills and Requirements:

-Due to the size of the plants that are grown on the nursery, applicants must be physically fit and willing to work outside in all weathers.

-A full clean driving licence is essential, as applicants will be expected to travel to the customers which are located nationwide, with occasional overnight stays.

-The ideal candidate will have basic gardening skills, with experience in implementing and installing trees, and hedges.

-Holding a digger licence is a great advantage, but not essential as training can be given.

Job Description

The successful candidate would be reporting to the Retail Manager, and responsible for the outdoor area, including designated buying to set parameters, the merchandising and maintenance of all products, and customer service. They would also have to assist/lead in the development and motivation of the Plantarea team and the monitoring of their performance.

Key Responsibilities

-Working with the Retail Manager to ensure the smooth running of the CPC.

-Assisting the Retail Manager with cash handling, invoices and any additional paperwork that is required.

-Checking and receiving deliveries of product following the required procedure.

-Merchandising of product to the required standards.

-Maintenance of stock through watering and health control to the required standard, ensuring wastage is minimized.

-Maintaining signage to the required standard for Merchandising and Sales.

-Ensuring a high level of customer service is maintained.

-Ensuring all staff in the outdoor area are fully informed and carry out their duties in an efficient manner.

Candidate Skills 

As the Plantarea Assistant Manager, you’ll need to have the following experience; A proven track record in garden centre retailing: you will know this working environment well in terms of the products & tips on how to care for a plants.

Head Gardener - EC8064 - This position has now been filled

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a knowledgeable and experienced Head Gardener to manage and maintain the private gardens on a large historic sporting estate near Leicester.

The family seat has been here for 800 years, and the Grade II* listed Georgian Hall sits within 110 acres of Parkland and 8 acres of gardens. The gardens include a scented garden, shrub rose garden, herbaceous and ericaceous borders, water features, walled kitchen garden, cut flower garden and four glasshouses. The kitchen garden supplies the house with fruit and vegetables. There is also a woodland garden and orchard that are currently being restored and enhanced.

The garden is private, only opening to the public on a few occasions a year for charity. The Head Gardener will be managing up to two gardeners and therefore will have good awareness of Health and Safety and the execution thereof. In keeping with the family commitment to the environment, it is desired to make the garden more self-sufficient in areas such as composting, leaf mould, stock plants, cutting and propagation and the reduction in the use of chemicals and the Head Gardener will lead these initiatives.

The ideal candidate will hold a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and a minimum of 10 years of experience working in a similar environment. He / She will have excellent plant knowledge, experience with designing borders and implementing plans as they will be executing the final phase of the owner’s vision and long-term plan for the garden. Spray certificates PA1/PA6, chainsaw certificates, maintenance, crosscutting and felling and first aid qualifications are required for the role, however training will be given if required. The successful candidate will have experience with propagation from cuttings and grafting as well as greenhouse management experience especially with unheated greenhouses growing camellias.

Additional responsibilities occasionally include assisting in the preparation of the garden for charity functions and church fund raising events, preparing and supplying firewood to the Hall in the winter and coordinating with the house to supply vegetables and cut flowers for the family, shoot lunches and other functions. A full driving licence is essential and experience with tractors and trailers would be advantageous. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role.

Accommodation is provided for the successful candidate in the form of a 2/3 bedroom cottage within walking distance of the job location. Council Tax is paid by the employers and all other bills are paid by the tenant. Shopping centres are within 2 miles.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to join a beautiful family Estate in Leicestershire. This role would suit a qualified and experienced gardener with the drive and initiative to maintain a horticulturally diverse garden to a high standard.

The estate consists of 15-acres of public garden and 1 ½ acres of private garden containing woodlands, open parklands, herbaceous borders, rose garden, kitchen garden, ornamental trees, flowering shrubs, a walled garden with potting sheds, glasshouse and spacious lawns.

Initially, the key responsibilities of the Skilled Gardener will be the overall taming and maintenance of the grounds including mowing, trimming, sorting and maintaining shrubs and edging. Therefore, applicants should hold demonstrable experience in each of the above garden areas. For 2019, there are exciting plans for diverse development projects that will be implemented with the onboarding of a new Head Gardener. This role will give the Skilled Gardener an excellent opportunity to work closely with the Head Gardener on these projects, a chance to develop their skillset and provide their own input where possible.

Applicants for this position should hold academic horticultural qualifications, preferably at Level 3 or above, experience of gardening on private estates, and good plant/horticultural knowledge in general.  The ability to work to a high degree of detail is essential. Suitable applicants will hold certificates in spraying (PA1/PA6) and ideally have a chainsaw certification. Candidates must be able to undertake basic routine machinery maintenance (strimmers, mowers and hedge cutters etc.) and should hold a full UK driving licence.  He/she must be physically fit, friendly and positive in their outlook to maintain the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the estate.
