We are currently seeking a Plant Area Manager with a good level of expertise that is essential for the role. You will have the retail vision and a passion for horticulture to take our business forward to the next level. The Plant Area Manager must have a commercial awareness of the retail environment with a strong knowledge of horticulture. You will have a sound understanding of visual merchandising and can provide inspirational displays.

You must have excellent knowledge and understanding of gardening and how plants are best suited to the garden. You must be able to inspire our customers, helping them to achieve the garden they dream of.

The Plant Area Manager must be able to interact effectively with different types of people including suppliers, team members and customers.

Strong buying and negotiating skills are essential for sourcing new plant products, as well as keeping track of all stock and maintaining the balance within the profit and loss margins

A beautiful and well-known private estate based near Ayot-St-Lawrence in Hertfordshire has created an exciting opportunity for a Skilled Gardener, to join their team on their varied and interesting garden. The impressive Grade II Listed period property is framed by gardens designed by a highly recognised, multiple Chelsea Gold Medal winning garden designer, who continues to work closely with the owners, and be involved with the gardens at an Estate/Garden Management level. The privately owned estate encompasses approximately 40 acres, of which 5 are gardens that are maintained to the highest standard. The gardens are part of the National Garden Scheme and open once a year to the public, towards the end of May, and as a testament to their popularity, have recently broken the regional record for the most successful turnout in a day. The estate is also home to various animals, a small herd of Dexter cattle, Texel sheep, chickens and horses.

The ornamental gardens feature many elements including specimen trees and shrubs, mixed and herbaceous planting, an orchard, water features, fine lawns, and meadow areas. The garden has two glasshouses including an orangery and a polytunnel to provide additional growing space. The kitchen garden and adjacent allotment space are used for the production of fruit and vegetables, of which some are used for preserves and juices.  The property owner is very passionate about the productive aspects of the gardens, loves cooking and welcomes new ideas to ensure continued interest. The remainder of the estate encompasses a swimming pool, outbuildings, horse stables, paddocks, beehives, parkland, a tennis court and a smallholding.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities of the Skilled Gardener are to assist the Head Gardener to ensure the formal gardens are developed and maintained to the highest standard including planting and maintaining a wide variety of plants, vegetables, shrubs, and trees. Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate gardeners who possess excellent horticultural knowledge and a positive, friendly character.  Chemical spray certificate and chainsaw licenses are both desirable, but not essential.  The successful applicant will liaise with the owners, and the Estate Manager/Designer, as well as the Head Gardener with a view to ensuring the smooth running and further development of the gardens in line with new ideas and techniques. Applicants should also have demonstrable experience on horticulturally diverse private estates, academic horticultural qualifications and good knowledge of plant propagation, kitchen gardening, glasshouse work, specialist pruning techniques, and particularly of ornamental horticulture and of efficient seasonal garden management.  Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is necessary, as is the ability to display a positive attitude.

Applicants will hold an RHS level 2 certificate or equivalent, have an in-depth and wide-ranging understanding of horticulture. Relevant previous experience working in a similar position; ideally 2 years minimum. The successful applicant will be self-motivated, genuinely enthusiastic about productive gardening, with excellent horticultural knowledge, communication and time management skills.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required as the property is located rurally.

We seek applications from gardeners who have at least 5 years professional experience, for this challenging and interesting role of Head Gardener on a large garden situated near Watford, Hertfordshire.

The gardens are spread over 3 acres and have two rivers flowing through them. These once magnificent gardens developed from the beginning of the 19th Century, were unfortunately allowed to fall into neglect over a period of 7 years. However, the present owner with the help of specialist tree surgeons has spent the past 5 years carrying out restoration work focusing mainly on the health and welfare of the substantial tree population, which include a number of rare and specimen trees, as well as planting new and exciting varieties. This phase of the work is largely complete, but apart from general routine maintenance little has been done to the remainder of the garden. The owner is now keen to employ a Head Gardener to work with him in bringing the gardens back to their full potential. There are currently several planted areas, including rose beds and shrubs, lawns, as well as a wildflower meadow with young fruit trees. As the Head Gardener, you will be free to hire a part time assistant gardener, whose working hours will reflect each season’s workload.

Your duties will include planning and developing new planting areas as well as lawn care and mowing, strimming, hedge trimming, pruning and general garden maintenance. You will also be expected to assist with the general maintenance of one of the rivers. The position provides an exciting opportunity to put your craft gardening skills to good use in bringing these gardens back to their former glory, with the assistance of another gardener.

Candidates must have at least 5years professional experience and be able demonstrate good gardening skills with good attention to detail. It is envisaged that the work will at times be physically demanding. He/she should have good horticultural knowledge preferably supported by a recognised horticultural qualification (RHS Level 2 or similar), as well as PA1/6 sprayers certificates. We are looking to recruit a Grounds Maintenance Assistant to join our established Maintenance team.  Under the direction of the School Gardener the job holder will carry out numerous gardening duties to maintain the landscaping, hedges, shrubs and lawns of the School site whilst implementing the annual horticultural works schedule and delivering high quality seasonal gardens and grounds.

Previous grounds maintenance/horticulture experience and qualifications would be beneficial (for example NPTC level PA1 and PA6a pesticide certificates, and an NVQ in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent) or alternatively, a commitment to undertake training and study to gain such qualifications as part of an Apprenticeship programme.  Suitable candidates must hold a current driving licence with category C1 or equivalent.  Workload is heavily reliant on weather therefore the ability to deal with a constantly changing workload is essential, as is a flexible and adaptable approach.

The position is 40 hours per week, 7.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday with an hour (unpaid) daily for lunch.

We require:

  • a supervisor
  • an experienced grounds maintenance operative

to work out of our Harlow depot to work on our grass cutting and shrub maintenance teams. The right candidate would have an experience in operating strimmers, ride on mowers, pedestrian mowers, hedge cutters and weeding machines as well as good background knowledge in grass and horticulture. Experience in operating a tractor and in line marking sports grounds is a huge plus. The right candidate must have driving licence.

Able to carry out DBS check.

Full induction, training, PPE and uniform will be provided.
