They are now looking for a Tree and Planting Officer to join the friendly team.

Job Description

The Tree and Planting Officer will be responsible for managing all aspects related to trees and planting across the organisation’s estate areas. This includes overseeing tree maintenance, planting initiatives, and green infrastructure projects to ensure legal compliance, risk reduction, and efficient budget management. The officer will coordinate with external contractors, inspects estate trees regularly, manage budgets, handle inquiries and complaints, collaborate with other departments, and contribute to management reports and health & safety compliance. The role requires qualifications in arboriculture, tree inspection, and a valid UK driving license, along with skills in project management, communication, and problem-solving.

Key Responsibilities

General duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Contractor management for tree, planting, and green infrastructure projects.
  • Oversight of Tree Management policies and procedures for legal compliance.
  • Inspection of estate trees and green areas.
  • Budget management and procurement of necessary products and services.
  • Handling complaints and inquiries regarding trees and green infrastructure.
  • Collaboration with relevant departments and stakeholders.
  • Contribution to management reports and health & safety compliance.
  • Participation in meetings and engagement activities.
Candidate Skills

Skills:

    • Comprehensive tree maintenance program, tree inspection, inventory, and contract management program.
    • Proficient in IT equipment usage for communication, scheduling, reporting, and data processing.
    • Adaptability to operate effectively in a resident-led environment.
    • Strong written and oral communication skills for influencing, negotiating, and persuading.
    • Commitment to improving performance.
    • Ability to engage in clear and constructive communication.

Experience:

    • Experience in successful Urban Tree Management and Risk Management, preferably utilising industry-specific software.
    • Experience in identifying and resolving plant failure issues (desirable).
    • Experience in managing Health & Safety Legislation within a Land Based Industry environment.
    • Experience in managing contractor performance.

Knowledge:

    • Knowledge of BS3998 standards.
    • In-depth understanding of tree management in the public realm, including related legislation, codes of practice, and risk management.
    • Familiarity with Biodiversity Action Plans and Implementation (desirable).
    • Understanding of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act and related duties and responsibilities (desirable).
    • Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work Legislation and associated duties and responsibilities.

Education/Qualifications/Training:

    • Minimum Level 3 Arboricultural qualification.
    • Lantra professional tree inspection certification.
    • Full UK driving license.

The landscape maintenance side of the business is undertaken by an in-house team. Our client is looking for an individual to effectively lead, manage and champion this team with a real passion for horticulture alongside professional qualifications.

Purpose of Job

To head the Landscape Management Team and be responsible for:

-Managing all aspects of the maintenance of the green infrastructure.

-Developing and delivering landscape improvement projects within the budget of the Landscape Management Department.

-Managing the Landscape Management Department’s budgets and ensure value for money, competitive purchasing and accountability for expenditure.

-Work to ensure the provision of an efficient and effective landscape management service.

-To ensure that Landscape Maintenance Department staff issues are identified, addressed and resolved in line with procedures.

-Liaise with all other departments to ensure the goals of the Landscape Management Department are transparent and understood.

-Work proactively with the Assistant Director of Estate Services in the procurement of new landscaping business and project manage external contracts.

-To be pro-active in the identification of developments within the Landscape Industry and assess the viability of the inclusion of such developments into the department.

-To be the first point of contact for information and advice on all aspects of Landscape Management within the business.

Main Duties and Responsibilities will include; supervision, monitoring and inspection, operational, organisational, health & safety and involvement & engagement. The working hours are 8 am – 4 pm (35 hours per week).

The ideal candidates will:

-Have extensive experience in effective staff management.

-Have experience promoting and encouraging staff growth and development.

-Be able to lead by example and self-motivate.

-Be able to work in a resident focused environment.

-Have professional qualifications in landscape/horticulture and tree management.

-Have extensive experience in effective large-scale tree and landscape management programmes.

-Have strong strategical management skills.

-Have a full driving licence.

Their portfolio of contracts range from small domestic gardens to large commercial estates and university grounds. This gives candidates an opportunity to experience a variety of work and client interfaces. They operate predominantly in the East London and Docklands area and are currently looking to expand their team to meet business growth demands.

Key points

Plant knowledge is an essential part of the role, along with a keen eye for detail and precision. Proven experience in all aspects of grounds maintenance and a good understanding of safe working practices is essential. Experience using garden maintenance machinery and tools e.g. pedestrian mowers; strimmers; leaf blowers etc. is required. 

Work hours are a minimum of 40 hrs a week Monday-Friday. Candidates must be flexible to work additional hours if required, and willing to work across a number of sites and in all weather conditions. Reliability and punctuality must be maintained at all times. The company vans are stocked with quality tools and are provided as part of the role. Initially you will be working under an experienced team leader to familiarise yourself with the sites and client requirements.

Must haves
