We are looking for a Permanent, Part-time Community and Estate Officer for an existing new development, Linmere in Houghton Regis.

The Community and Estates Officer and will manage the public open space and community engagement projects, Involving close working with contractor, developers, and colleagues. This role will work to maximise the economic, environmental and social value which can be delivered from the green spaces around the development, funded via service charge paid by the owners of the homes within the development. 

Key Responsibilities

A key responsibility of the role will be to ensure the site is managed to a high standard by delivering good and efficient contractor management. This will involve regular site inspections, up to date record keeping, liaising directly with Master Developer (LI) and contractors and responding quickly to any issues.

You will be involved with the development of landscape and planting designs and commenting on plans for future phases of the site, then bringing new areas of the site into management once phases of the development have been completed.

Close working with the Land Trusts’ Communications Team will be essential in ensuring the site is promoted and marketed creatively and effectively through a variety of events and activities.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Horticultural and Landscape design experience.
  • Experienced in contract management.
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to develop and manage relationships with partner organisations and contractors, engaging with local people in resolving issues and site management
  • Experience in liaising with residents/the public
  • IT literate with proven skills in using MS Office packages
  • Ability and confidence to work on own initiative, as well as part of a team and to resolve problems as they arise, remaining calm under pressure
  • High level of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Confidence to manage competing priorities under own initiative
  • Ability to balance a long-term vision with attention to detail to ensure that the vision can be successfully realised

Desirable Experience:

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring management agreements, landscape management plans and management contracts
  • Experience in the management of sites funded through service charges.
  • Experience of working with a range of partners including public, private, and voluntary sector organisations
  • Experience of setting up and running landscape management contracts
  • Experience in the use of Customer Service Relationship Management Systems

Job Brief

As a Plantarea Manager, you will deliver an exceptional service to customers, ensuring the quality of the plants are presented to a high standard. In this fast-pace, hands on role, you will focus on all areas of plant care/sales. You will also have key-holder responsibilities and deputise in the absence of the Garden Centre Manager.

Key Responsibilities

-Working with the Centre Manager to ensure the smooth running of the Plantarea.

-Working proactively, enthusiastically and with drive to succeed.

-Assisting the Centre Manager with cash handling, invoices and any additional paperwork that is required.

-Key Holder – Covering for the Centre Manager on their weekday and alternate weekend off work and providing cover for the Centre Manager when on business days off site, days off or holiday/sickness.

-Ordering plants and product to pre-determined levels and within designated parameters from specified suppliers.

-Checking and receiving deliveries of product following the required procedure.

-Merchandising of product to the required standards.

-Maintenance of stock through watering and health control to the required standard, ensuring wastage is minimized.

-Maintaining signage to the required standard for Merchandising and Sales.

-Develop, motivate, and lead your team and monitor their performance and ongoing training.

-Work with your team to make sure we continue to deliver an unrivalled plant offering 

-Ensuring a high level of customer service is maintained.

-Ensuring all staff in the plantarea area are fully informed and carry out their duties in an efficient manner.

Candidate Skills 

As the Plantarea Manager, you’ll need to have the following experience: A proven track record in garden centre retailing: you will know this working environment well in terms of the products & tips on how to care for a plants.

-Good plant knowledge

-Several years’ experience working in a Plantarea or Plant Nursery

-You have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

-A meticulous eye for detail and brilliant written and verbal communication skills

-A strong work ethic, a humble attitude and an entrepreneurial spirit

A rather unique vacancy has arisen for a Head Gardener to manage a heritage site in Bedfordshire that has food and flower gardens in an ornamental setting alongside wild flowers and cultivated garden plants. The gardens grow cereal crops such as oats, rye, wheat and barley in rotation with potatoes, onions, cabbages and showcase habitats for farming and protection of wildlife.

The client is looking for an experienced Head Gardener who can enhance and develop all areas of the garden and meadows ensuring high standards of horticultural maintenance, presentation and visitor engagement to bring creative excellence to the garden.

It is essential that applicants have an RHS Level 3 certificate in practical horticulture, demonstrable equivalent hands-on experience and ideally a vocational qualification and/or extensive experience working with volunteers. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and a First Aid Certificate would be beneficial though not essential, as training may be provided.  

The role will entail working within gardens and landscapes open to the public, therefore considerable experience with the public would be an advantage as would experience of running a kitchen garden. As part of the role you will be expected to supervise and train volunteers. Due to the garden being open to the public comprehensive, knowledge of Health and Safety, COSSH and risk assessment procedures are essential.

Gardening duties will include hands-on management of the garden and grounds alongside drawing up management plans, ensuring the machinery and tools are suitably maintained, maintaining the garden infrastructure, plant propagation, and pest/weed management and sustainable recycling of garden waste.

Management duties to include setting and managing garden budgets, attending regular meetings, input into social media with the Marketing Manager, attend training courses as required and occasional weekend or overtime duties.
