We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Work Based Learning Instructor to work with the Senior lecturer in the Horticulture department in contributing to the coordination & delivery of Horticulture Work Based Learning Programmes mainly at the Elmwood Campus.
The postholder will deliver practical vocational skills training to Horticulture Work Based Learning students and external clients. Working with the Senior lecturer, Work Based Learning Manager and administrators in the co-ordination and delivery of Modern Apprenticeships, in line with appropriate project and SRUC policies, procedures and SDS Operational Rules.
In this role you will:
- Deliver agricultural/horticulture education, training, instruction and assessment which will include practical vocational skills, observing relevant health and safety procedures
- Have a student focused approach to teaching and learning and be able to engage students in a practical environment
- Maintain and update training materials to meet current vocational standards, practice and legislation.
- Complete student recruitment & enrolment/registration documents for work-based learners.
- Carry out student assessment in accordance with Awarding Body standards at any SRUC campus
- Maintain appropriate records of attendance, teaching and assessment.
- Ensure all internal and external communications are answered in a timely, effective and customer focussed manner.
- Attend internal and external meetings as required.
- Effectively manage own workload and diary.
- Take part in continual professional development.
You should be educated to HND level in a Horticulture or related discipline. You should have proven experience in Horticulture, including practical field work combined with a practical and theoretical knowledge of modern agricultural/horticultural practises. Ideally you should be an approved Lantra Instructor or City & Guilds (NPTC) Assessor or possess a teaching qualification. Experience of assessment in practical and written curriculum items and/ or Teaching/training experience is highly desirable.

An opportunity has arisen for a full-time assistant gardener to join a small team in Mertoun Gardens, which is in the Scottish Borders. The gardens lie to the north and east of Mertoun House extending to about 26 acres.
Duties will include –
- Cultivation of quality fruit and vegetables.
- Routine maintenance of flower borders, climbing plants and ornamental plantings.
- Lawn care.
- Operation of garden machinery.
- Monitoring health of trees.
- Pruning.
- Hedge Cutting.
- Spraying.
- Assist with Public, student and school visits.
- Weekend opening of greenhouses and watering duties fortnightly.
- General duties within the Estate.
Person Specification –
- Presentable and organised.
- Flexible and willing to work extra hours if required.
- Excellent communication skills.
- PA1/6, first aid an advantage but not essential.
- SVQ level 2 or 3 horticultural qualification equivalent experience desirable.
- Must hold a full driving licence.

Position: Assistant Head Gardener, Private Estate.

The estate, which is over 400 years old, includes a walled garden, an orchard, extensive borders, topiary and a large heather garden. There is a large ornamental pond with an open southerly aspect to the sea. There is a new glasshouse and a kitchen garden. In all 80HA.
The successful applicant will possess a UK Driving Licence, a chain saw licence and HND or HNC certificates, or RHS Level 2.
Excellent plant knowledge and horticultural capabilities are essential, the garden is in a transition period and the owners wish to expand and develop the gardens by introducing unusual and exotic plants, hopefully the garden will very soon once again be open to selective members of the garden community. This is an excellent opportunity for a person with imagination and a flair for gardening.

The successful candidate will blend a thorough knowledge of the Horticulture industry and its future education and training needs, with experience of teaching, course organisation and course development in a higher education setting. There may additionally be opportunities to develop research, consultancy and scholarly activity in the programme areas
The successful applicant should have a relevant PhD degree or research equivalent qualification in horticulture or a related subject. Experience of teaching in a higher education setting is essential.
They will be a team player with well-developed communication and networking skills and possess an ability to work in partnership with outside organisations. With sound practical knowledge the successful candidate should have the ability to teach modules in a variety of aspects of the Horticulture industry.

We are looking for a horticulture lecturer who is able to integrate with colleagues across our existing teaching and research strengths. Candidates should have strengths in practical skills (interests may include, but not limited to, sustainable horticulture, urban horticulture, production horticulture and management) to use and develop Elmwood campus across education, research and KE activities. Ideally, the successful applicant will be experienced in FE and/or HE delivery, combined with a drive to impact positively on today’s horticulture industry.
The successful candidate will be required to teach on and further develop the FE and HE horticulture portfolio. Within this programme across SRUC, there is an emphasis on preparing students for careers and fostering the essential skills needed by industry.
The successful applicant will also ideally have a track record of research and/or industry experience in a related field. SRUC is seeking a closer alignment of its research and education activities and it is hoped that the successful applicant will contribute to world class research carried out within SRUC. You will grasp the opportunity to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on current strengths within the department, and across the institution.
