The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden appreciates the potential of edible gardens for their content, beauty and the stories that they tell. Edible gardens provide valuable opportunities to improve the environment and peoples’ lives by sharing, learning and nurturing. There is now a fantastic opportunity for someone to join the team and oversee the creation and development of this considerable part of the project. The edible gardens will extend to around 5 acres including dry stone wall retained terraces, a young forest garden and areas of undeveloped, gently sloped grassland. The aspiration is to showcase sustainable production of unusual edible plants and herbs applying permaculture principles and using innovative techniques while minimising interventions.
The role

This position requires someone who not only has significant experience with edible plants and growing systems but also with people. In addition, a range of public events will be developed with other SBG staff to engage with visitors sharing their knowledge and appreciation of edible gardens.
As developing gardens, the successful candidate will need to be creative and adaptable, willing to adjust and accommodate new ideas while maintaining their core understanding of the basics. They will be required to work closely with others in reaching key decisions, work in a timely manner and establish a program of development.
Considerable knowledge of edible plants is fundamental for this position to ensure a comprehensive range of plants is established and continues to develop depending on climate, requirements and suitability. This project will generate valuable information that the Edible Gardens Lead will ensure is documented and shared with the network that they will develop as well as any other interested party.
The successful candidate should be qualified in horticulture or other relevant subjects to HND level or higher and have at least 5 years’ experience growing edible plants, knowledge of applying permaculture principles and a passion for their work. Nursery Supervisor

The project
The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden was identified as a special place for a new landscape project in 2010. The primary focus is on flora from temperate biomes around the world highlighting the importance of biodiversity and the effects of climate change on plants, adaptation and resilience. We endeavour to collaborate with global partners and provide education and research opportunities encouraging dynamic thinking and the conservation of biological diversity. The project will provide a Living Collection, landscapes and experiences for people to enjoy for a range of uses from recreation to research.
The role
A Nursery Supervisor is now needed to help with the development and management of professional nursery facilities and practices. The successful candidate will work closely with a Botanical Lead in developing a nursery to support the propagation and cultivation of diverse plant stock to establish the Living Collection in a range of international ecosystems and specially designed landscapes. The role also involves maintaining accurate records and monitoring plant inventory using the designated IT systems with a focus on producing robust, landscape-ready botanical specimens, sharing data and contributing to the ongoing development of nursery infrastructure.
The majority of the Living Collection will be grown from seed and the Nursery supervisor will need to have considerable experience in germination techniques and growing on nursery stock. Previous experience in working with others to develop nursery facilities using traditional and innovative means is also essential to help with creating a fully functioning, professional plant nursery. The role requires someone with significant knowledge of pest and disease management including hygiene, quarantine and monitoring to ensure that all phytosanitary procedures are in accordance with the Living Collection Policy.
SBG shares research information with other institutions and the Nursery Supervisor needs to be well organised with an inquisitive mind and an eye for detail who is expected to gather and disseminate data digitally, participate in research and to run programs ensuring SOPs are followed.
The successful candidate should be qualified in a relative subject to at least HND level with a minimum of 5 years professional experience. A full UK driving licence is needed to perform all required duties.

The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden has been developing for 14 years and this year will see an increase in activities that requires recruiting for a number of new roles including the position of Landscape Manager.
SBG will become globally recognised for curating its living collection in designed landscapes: shaped and constructed using natural rock and water features. The wider estate enhances the countryside by establishing and maintaining wildlife habitats that define specific areas. A programme of creating sustainable, regenerative systems for the environment and edible crops is underway and will continue to evolve.
The existing horticulture and landscape team constructs, creates, establishes and maintains all designed and countryside areas. The SBG nurseries source, propagate and produce from seed the majority of our living collection. The SBG continues to increase its scientific, public and educational activities with both national and international interest groups and partners.
Role Summary
The Landscape Manager will require specific knowledge, skills and experience to fulfil their role and benefit the project. They will have specialist knowledge in at least one of: landscape construction, plant knowledge or education and mentoring.
The Landscape Manager will have a genuine passion for their work, plants and landscapes. An inquisitive mind, attention to detail and the ability to innovate will lead to success in the role and help to develop the project and colleagues.
The role will report to one of the directors of Botanical Operations Limited, the operational arm of the SBG.

- Develop effective working relationships with contractors, managers, other departments and community partners to enhance service provision.

Concept work on The Shuttleworth Botanic Garden (SBG) in the Isle of Man started in
2011. The early years have allowed us to identify key elements and objectives that will
enable the accomplishment of this ambitious, international botanical landscape project.
While still in its infancy, the garden is now entering an exciting period of development.
Our botanical landscapes will provide areas in which to:
- showcase and conserve plants from temperate biomes around the world;
- study genetic diversity and the effects of climate change on plants; and
- provide fantastic educational and recreational opportunities for a wide range of
people.
Several large landscape construction projects are underway involving earth moving and
the creation of large, natural rock and water features. At the same time, other significant
landscape areas are being designed.
A new position of Landscape Manager is required to support this fundamental phase of
project implementation. Our landscapes take considerable time and care to create and
require specialist skills and dedication in our team. As Landscape Manager you will
commit to this diverse, long-term project and play an important part in realising the vision
of creating a globally recognised botanic garden in the Isle of Man.
You will hold a relevant academic qualification at level 5 (HND) or at degree level. You will
have a minimum of seven years’ experience in notable landscape, botanic or garden
projects where you have demonstrated drive and determination to succeed, willingness
