Sole Gardener - East Hertfordshire - Live Out - EC4505 - This position has been filled

A fantastic opportunity has become available for a permanent full time Sole Gardener to develop and maintain 6.5 acres of garden and grounds on a family owned estate located in East Hertfordshire. The garden and grounds have not had much development, there is an existing formal border around the house with not much else in the way of formal gardens. Ideally organic principles would be adopted to establish and develop areas of the estate with a walled kitchen garden to grow vegetables and herbs being desired. The owners are looking for someone to design and create different areas in the garden over a 3-5-year timescale.

Applicants will need to have practical experience in horticulture, ideally qualifications to RHS level 3 (or equivalent level of vocational experience).  A proficient level of plantsmanship/plant husbandry skills are required with knowledge of a range of horticultural techniques covering a varied range of plant types. Previous garden design experience would be an advantage along with strong people skills to build and maintain relationships with the owners. Applicants should be confident and skilled in pruning methods, i.e. of wisteria and roses. To be considered for this role you will need a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a gardening position.

Sole Maintenance Gardener - Live Out - E017

An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Sole Gardener in Hertfordshire.  The successful family-run garden centre and nursery has been trading for over 60 years and has an excellent reputation within the industry.  Due to the upcoming departure of the current gardener, who is leaving to join the garden design sector, an opening has arisen for a competent and experienced person to manage the gardens and surrounding grounds.

The main one-acre garden will be the focus of the horticultural aspect of the position, with maintenance of the grounds within the 10 acre property being equally important in terms of overall presentation.  Due to the nature of the business, the standard to which the site must be maintained is of the upmost importance and as such, you must have exceptional attention to detail and an efficient working manner.

You will be working predominantly as a Sole Maintenance Gardener, with some assistance provided on a seasonal basis and during busy periods if required.

Applicants will ideally hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification, have excellent plant knowledge, practical horticultural skills and experience of operating a range of garden machinery.  Typical daily duties will include mowing and strimming, shrub pruning and labelling, management of small trees and herbaceous borders, planting, rotavating, weed control and hedge-cutting.  You will also be responsible for sowing and maintaining a wild flower area as well as planting and managing bedding plant displays.  Applicants with experience of and a love for Dahlias in particular, are encouraged to apply.  Spray tickets (PA1/PA6) are required.

Sole Estate Gardener - EC4442

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced, qualified and trustworthy estate gardener to take ownership of a small private estate garden near Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.  The role will suit a qualified and experienced gardener with the ability and willingness to help out with general estate maintenance tasks.

Set in a wider eight acres of paddocks and meadows, the 1.5 acre formal garden comprises of lawns with mixed beds and borders, a small pond, mature trees, three apple trees, and hedges consisting of hornbeam, laurel, yew, and beech.  Surrounding paddocks are to be mowed though the wild meadows are to be left to attract wildlife. 

The primary focus of the role is to ensure correct species-specific management of existing plants and to maintain the non-horticultural aspects of the estate to a high standard.  There will be a small amount of kitchen gardening work, with an allocated area to be established and developed by the successful applicant.  Professional contractors will be brought in where necessary, but applicants should have a good working knowledge of handyman/DIY duties.

The ideal candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification, good physical fitness, a proven ability to manage their own time and demonstrate competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  Applicants must be able and willing to help out with other estate duties as they arise such as general indoor and outdoor DIY, including some painting on occasion, for example.  This is to ensure year-round employment on the estate, specifically during the winter months.

The primary focus of the role is gardening, so applicants must be gardeners/horticulturists first and foremost.  Applicants will ideally hold spray certificates in addition to a Level 2 or 3 Horticulture qualification, a full driving licence, and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude.

An attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced Estate Worker to play a key role on a stunning private small holding near Welwyn in Hertfordshire.  The position would suit Estate Workers with experience of managing animals and machinery, as well as their own time and associated responsibilities.

The privately owned small holding encompasses approximately 30 acres in total, 25 of which comprise of paddocks/ménage and rough grassland, with a tennis court and swimming pool located within close proximity to the garden.  Livestock on site includes a small breeding herd of 12 Dexter cattle, 7 Texel sheep including 4 breeding ewes, chickens and horses. A good basic knowledge of animal husbandry would be advantageous. Applicants must be confident in the general handling of livestock.

Applicants should be experienced estate or farm workers with a good level of competency in a variety of tasks, the willingness to be flexible, and be able to maintain a positive attitude at all times. Demonstrable experience of managing the animals stated above is of paramount importance.  Duties will also involve maintenance of the paddocks and hedges, mowing, fencing/basic hard landscaping, and general yard work. 'Applicants must be competent in operating a compact tractor and a range of implements and be proficient in the use of a wide range of garden machinery. Knowledge of general machinery maintenance is an advantage'.
