Landscape Roof Gardener

Landscape roof gardener & instructor

School of Design

Greenwich Campus

£22,149 to £24,285 plus £5018 London weighting

Part Time Hours: 0.4 FTE

Permanent

Job Reference: 3557-E

The School of Design is located in an award-winning building within the Greenwich World Heritage Site. Our building is home to several design-focused disciplines, including landscape architecture and urban design, where undergraduate and post-graduate teaching occurs. Our remarkable building hosts 14 green roof gardens, approximately 0.5 ha in area, an extensive living wall, and two horticulture and aquaponic laboratories. We are looking for a gardener/instructor to help manage and maintain these features year-round. Apart from the garden planning, management and maintenance tasks, the role extends to assisting staff in teaching, especially about plants, planting design and horticulture, as a technical demonstrator.

The 0.4 FTE role is usually two days per week; however, we are looking for someone to be flexible and manage their time in response to seasonal tasks, requirements, teaching schedules and objectives. Therefore, discussing with the successful candidate, we will design a plan to meet these requirements. For example, an average of 3 hrs per week during term time will be devoted to instructing students in class and on the Stockwell Street roofs, either carrying out training in planting and horticultural techniques or experimental/research work.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has the extensive gardening experience, great plant, planting design and horticultural knowledge to help keep our green roofs in tip-top condition, maintain and enhance the ecosystem services that they provide, helping to manage these assets for the benefit of the staff and students. Additionally, assisting in teaching plants and horticulture will allow for better integration with the landscape staff and interaction with students, which is richly rewarding.

There is also the potential to participate in planting and nature-based research activities focusing on green roofs, living walls, urban agriculture etc. as an exemplar of what can be achieved with green infrastructure in response to climate change and the need for sustainable development as part of the University’s 2030 Strategy and the School of Design’s vision.

The successful candidate will have one regulated horticultural qualification equal to Ofqual Level 2 Certificate or above.

While the working hours for this role is flexible, some weekend work will be required to cover open day and events.
