The successful candidate will have the opportunity to become Assistant Head Gardener in future and so must be confident in the general running of the garden in the absence of the Head Gardener.

The garden consists of various beds and borders, a rose garden, kitchen garden, a cut flower area and areas of manicured and natural lawn as well as two glasshouses.  The two-acre garden is surrounded by parkland.  The property also plays host to small animals such as chickens and ducks which are managed on occasion by the garden team.  Applicants should therefore be willing to assist with these non-horticultural aspects of the job when required.

Applicants should be experienced gardeners; qualified to at least Level 2 and must have experience of working on private estate gardens.  You should be confident in your seasonal horticultural skills, plant identification skills, and must be proficient in the use of garden machinery including ride-on mowers.  Spray and chainsaw certificates would be beneficial but are not essential for the role initially.

The role will involve general garden maintenance with a focus on the more involved horticultural tasks such as kitchen gardening and the management of roses, beds and borders, glasshouse work and propagation.  The suitable candidate will be confident and willing to work within a small friendly team but should also be happy to work on their own in certain areas of the garden for the majority of the time.

A wonderful opportunity for a skilled Sole Gardener has arisen at an impressive private garden near Stourhead, Wiltshire.  This property is owned by an artist with a genuine passion for their garden and the owner is looking to collaborate with an experienced gardener with a flair for design, on the continued development of the garden. 

Applicants for this position will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 or equivalent/above.  Hands-on garden management experience with a positive attitude is important as is the ability to plan and manage your own workload proactively.  The successful applicant will get a generous employment package, as detailed below.

The Grade 2 listed property has a 1.5-acre garden with views over the wider Stourhead Estate.  The garden comprises formal lawns (which are looked after by a specialist contractor), box and yew hedges/topiary, herbaceous borders and new perennial planting, a pergola and herb terrace, an orchard in a perennial meadow, a greenhouse and both formal and informal ponds.  The owner has created the garden from the ground up over the last 19-years, and there is ongoing development.  The ecological conversion of the orchard into a sustainable perennial meadow is an interesting project in which the Sole Gardener will play an important role.  The garden is currently open once a year under the NGS.   

Typical duties of the Sole Gardener will include all usual garden maintenance tasks as well as pest and disease management via organic means (whenever possible), the appropriate seasonal, species-specific pruning of shrubs and fruit trees, as well as clipping of topiary/hedging.  The gardener will be responsible for maintenance of all paths, terraces and garden features; e.g. ponds, the pergola and outdoor seating.  The gardener will be responsible for the supervision of the external lawn maintenance contractors.

Applicants will need to have a keen interest in colour sensitive planting and be willing to work with the owner in the continual development of planting designs, including seasonal bulbs and annuals.  Applicants should have excellent plant knowledge, including propagation, and good attention to detail.   As collaboration with the owner is important, at least a weekly meeting or email will be required of the successful applicant.

This role will be contracted to 35-hours per week.  The position is offered with a 10% pension contribution and a very generous 30-days holiday per annum, plus Bank Holidays (with holidays to be taken at times agreed with the owners).  A charming three-bedroom cottage with south-facing garden is provided rent-free, however Council Tax and utility bills are to be paid by the Sole Gardener.

A level 2 horticultural qualification is required as a minimum as well as at least 5 years of recent experience working on a private estate. A chainsaw certificate and spraying certificate (PA1/PA6) is required for the role, however, training can be arranged by the employer as long as the candidate is willing to acquire. A full clean driving licence is essential as some driving duties will be expected.

A three-bedroom cottage is available for the successful candidate. Partners, children and well-behaved pets are welcome. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a skilled gardener with a keen interest in organic horticulture to join a team of gardeners maintaining and developing a Grade II landscaped Edwardian Garden near Box, Wiltshire.  

The 8 acres of formal gardens consists of an organic kitchen garden providing a range of vegetable produce, orchard and fruit trees, an ornamental garden with extensive lawns, topiary including yew and box hedging, herbaceous borders with pleached beech, a beautifully grown laburnum tunnel, wild flowers areas and mature trees and perennials. The gardens are set in invested horticultural land/an organic farm. The formal gardens are kept private and open to the public 3 times a year under the National Garden Scheme.

The extensive plantings that surround the Manor are undergoing considerable redevelopment by the owners and the Head Gardener. The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and a strong interest in getting involved in a rejuvenating and renewal project. He/She will be responsible for the care and maintenance of the 8 acres of gardens and grounds to a high horticultural standard and with minimal supervision. This would include maintaining the kitchen garden, growing a wide array of fruits and vegetables, lawncare, hedge cutting, pruning, transplanting, weeding, etc. A working knowledge of plant propagation and glasshouses is required as the successful candidate will assist in the efficient running of various glasshouses.

The ideal candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification (preferably at Level 3) and have experience working on large private estates. They will have good plant knowledge, an understanding of health and safety regulations and experience in the use and basic maintenance of hand tools and garden machinery. The role reports into the Head Gardener and the successful candidate will work alongside other members of staff therefore good communications skills is important.

Additional responsibilities may include making small local deliveries and collections with the use of an Estate vehicle, therefore a clean UK driving licence is essential. He/She will take part in a weekend rota of 1 in 4 weekends to cover glasshouse work and other requirements throughout the growing season.
