The position is full time and permanent and the Sole Gardener will work closely with an 8-time Chelsea Flower show gold medallist garden designer. This position will suit a qualified/skilled, physically fit, and enthusiastic gardener in search of a rewarding role in which to make their mark.

The estate covers about 14 acres, and the successful candidate will be responsible for about 6 acres of gardens surrounding the house. The gardens consist of extensive lawns, matured pleasure grounds, a walled kitchen garden (to be redeveloped) with wall fruit, span-roof greenhouse and potting shed. The remaining land is farmland and woodland. The Gardener will work closely with the renowned garden designer in implementing the design, redeveloping the garden as a whole including the kitchen garden and carrying out extensive planting.

Applicants will ideally hold a qualification in horticulture combined with previous professional experience as a Senior Gardener on a large private garden. In addition, you will need to have excellent horticultural knowledge in plant identification, pest and disease identification, pruning techniques and plant care. Other requirements are exceptional attention to detail, enthusiasm, self motivated, strong work ethic and willingness to be creative whilst working to consistently high standards in gardening practices and tidiness. Good communication skills are important as is the ability to be proactive, organised and plan and prioritise your workload. PA1/PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are desirable but not essential and the ability to operate a wide range of garden machinery is required for the role. A full UK driving licence is essential.

The 2-acre garden consists of a kitchen garden and greenhouse for growing vegetables and herbs for the owners use and propagation - raised from seed and cuttings, cut flower garden, climbing roses, mixed beds and borders, lawns and swimming pool. There is also a considerable amount of hedging and trees within the garden.

The garden is flat and has free-draining sandy acid soil. It is kept mostly organic with some use of glyphosate and pyrethrum for pathways etc. The garden is open to the public through the NGS 2 – 3 times a year and the owners hold the occasional charity opening and events.

This is an ideal opening for a motivated Gardener wishing to make a real contribution to an established garden and shrubbery that needs further development. The successful applicant will be part of a friendly team on the estate and the gardener should have a positive attitude, work well with others as well as be self-motived to work on their own unsupervised.

Applicants should be experienced professional gardeners with good plant knowledge and creative abilities. Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning such as rose and small tree pruning is essential for the role. Spray certificates and chainsaw certificates are a requirement and training can be provided as long as there is the willingness to acquire the necessary tickets. The gardener will have a good understanding of health and safety for themselves and others and have a sensible attitude. The Estate is well equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. The successful candidate must hold a clean full driving licence.

Additional duties include contributing to the security of house and grounds, occasionally house watching and walking the dogs when the owners are away.

A lovely 3-bedroom house within walking distance is provided with the role. Council tax is paid by the employer and water is provided by the estate. Partners and children are welcome. Pets are subject to approval.

A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified gardener to play a key role in a beautiful private garden, designed by Arne Maynard.  This opportunity would suit a keen hands-on horticulturist with demonstrable experience in a similar role in a private estate garden.

The property encompasses 40-acres in total, with formal garden areas comprising a large orchard, yew topiary, box parterres, pleached beech trees, a large pond with water features, expansive lawns, mature trees and mixed/herbaceous borders throughout.

The successful applicant will join an existing small garden team and will be responsible for managing and maintaining the formal garden areas to a high horticultural standard.  The opportunity to assist with maintenance of the wider estate exists where necessary, which provides variation to the work and the opportunity to learn new skills. The gardener will be responsible for liaising with existing grounds team, planning and intermeshing projects. He / She will quantify and cost plants, materials and tools for purchase as well as monitor processes and results which will include flagging issues and providing options for improvement. It is important that records are maintained at all times.

Applicants should possess an academic horticultural qualification; ideally at RHS level 2 or above, spray certificates (PA1/PA6) or the willingness to acquire the ticket as training can be provided and/or extensive hands-on experience in large private gardens.  The ideal candidate will have good technical gardening knowledge including species-specific pruning techniques, experience with herbaceous borders, knowledge of seasonal garden management considerations, good plant identification skills, competence with a range of garden tools and machinery, and good physical fitness.

The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, will work to a consistently high standard and will be self-motivated whilst being able to adopt a flexible approach to their work. He / She will be able to prioritise and plan work efficiently and time plan daily, weekly and monthly tasks effectively. The ability to undertake basic machinery maintenance would be beneficial but is not essential.

A full UK driving licence and your own transport are required in order to commute to and from work as the property is located rurally.  A positive attitude and good sense of humour are essential, as the wellbeing of the team and general atmosphere on the estate are important to owners and existing employees.

Our client has a beautiful private estate near Andover, Hampshire and is looking for an experienced and knowledgeable, all rounded Head Gardener to join on a full time and permanent basis.

This charming English garden covers about 4 acres including two paddocks managed by a local farmer. The formal garden includes lawns, rose garden, herbaceous borders that require attention and certain areas replanted, kitchen garden, fishpond and greenhouses.  The kitchen garden provides the house with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers however there is an abundance which the Head Gardener is also welcome to.

The owner has lived at the property for over 50 years and has a real passion for the garden. Their Head Gardener has recently retired, and the owner is looking for an experienced gardener to manage and maintain the garden to a high standard. The ideal candidate will have excellent plant knowledge and experience in the finer horticultural aspects such as specialist pruning, kitchen gardening and planting schemes. They will also be comfortable with the mowing, weeding, hedge cutting, strimming and raise plants for the house.

An opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled gardener to play a key role in the ongoing development and maintenance of a private garden near Hambledon in Hampshire, on a 2-3 day/week basis.  This opportunity is open to self-employed gardeners who can demonstrate a thorough understanding of horticulture with excellent plant identification and time management skills.

The compact garden of approximately one-acre surrounds the house and is bordered by paddocks and copses extending approximately four-acres.  Located in a rural hamlet, the garden comprises lawns, herbaceous and perennial borders, mature and young trees, gravel areas and pathways, flagstone paving, climbing plants and shrubs throughout.  The garden also contains recently established raised beds for the fruit and vegetables to be planted and a glasshouse and cold frame has recently been installed.  The garden is in the process of redesign and planting and as such, the role is focussed on design implementation and the associated application of necessary horticultural knowledge. 

The successful applicant will be required to undertake greenhouse management and will have a good understanding of soil types. He / she will also be responsible for the general garden maintenance such as bed/border management and planting, pruning, and general seasonal garden management.  In addition to the above, other small maintenance tasks will be required to a lesser degree such as raking gravel and sweeping of terraces.  Heavy maintenance work is carried out by two groundsmen on a part-time basis to cover the hedge cutting, tree surgery, lawncare, soil rotation and organic matter.  At present, there is no requirement for mowing of lawns or paddocks, though this may be something that could be requested in instances where the groundsmen are on holiday.

Suitable candidates are likely to be self-employed, should hold an RHS Level 3 horticultural qualification (practical and theoretical) and gardening experience, possess good plant identification skills, good physical fitness, an ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of garden machinery, and have a thorough understanding of seasonal garden management.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial, and a driving licence is essential due to the rural location of the property.

Gardener

A rare and incredible opportunity has become available for a gardener to manage and maintain the 1-acre productive and ornamental garden of an award-winning country pub in Hampshire. The position is for a sole gardener, to join a friendly team of 22 staff working at the pub.

On the production side, the gardener will work closely with the kitchen team in identifying and growing fruit, vegetables and produce seasonally for their dishes. The strawberries grow around each raised bed perimeter and the new young plants are potted on for further use. Good appearance at all times is essential as guests have access to the area to view the garden. Plum trees were planted in Spring 2013 and needs watering regularly.

There are four timed-watering systems at the pub – 1. Poly tunnel, 2. hanging baskets and brick wall, 3. lawns, raised beds and boarders, and 4. Plum trees, asparagus bed and lawn. All pots to be hand watered twice a week or more if required, from water tanks/butts and fed with tomato food once a month.

The non-productive areas of the garden include the hedges to be cut as required and cuttings to be planted in small pots for future hedges, the borders are to be maintained, divided and plants replaced as required and the Piecrust edging to be trimmed by hand. Lawncare; cutting the lawn once a week, and the kitchen staff help with moving tables and chairs, weed and feed twice a year or as needed and Supagrass applied two treatments a year. The hanging baskets are to be planned in advance for the next year, as well as the theme for troughs and pots too. The gardener will also be responsible for maintaining the indoor plants, repotting when needed including the preparation of bulbs for indoor display, potting in jam pans with moss or decorative bark and tending to Phalaenopsis.

Other responsibilities include leaf blowing, clearing the gutter, mowing the paddock, strimming the field entrance and footpath - These areas do not belong to the pub but require maintenance as our guests use them. The owners are keen to encourage wildlife such as frogs, spiders, ladybirds, birds and a hedgehog or two! Pest control is used in the form of rat boxes/baits and slug pellets however insect spraying is to be used sparingly. The gardener will maintain and clean the garden machinery on a regular basis as well and purchasing petrol for the mowers and supplies as and when required. As required, wood to be brought up from wood pile in field either for decorative purposes or fallen wood to be piled up and burned.
