An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to work alongside the Head Gardener and another senior gardener in maintaining a beautiful and innovative 35-acre private estate near Rye, East Sussex. This position is available to candidates interested in 4 or 5 days per week and the salary would be pro rata for 4 days.

The stunning garden is made up of several different character areas consisting of a very large formal English modern style garden with extensive perennial plantings, rose garden, fern garden, Italian garden, exotic beds, other shrub and perennial beds.  There is a young orchard, a large vegetable garden as well as a new tree plantation, two large greenhouses, rose and clematis 'cloister' type walk, formal hedging and topiary and several formal lawn areas. The garden extends to around five acres in all.

The owners are garden enthusiasts and have been developing the gardens since they bought the property nearly 7 years ago and continue to do so. The skilled gardener will work closely with the Head Gardener on any developments and will be willing to learn and develop their skills to later work on their own initiative. He / She will be responsible for the general maintenance of the garden such as the hedge cutting, strimming, clearing leaves, weeding and support in other areas such as feeding and caring for the chicken and peacocks.

The ideal candidate will have good knowledge of plants, garden practices and the use of garden machinery. He / She will have proven general horticultural skills, work to a high standard and ideally is a keen knowledgeable plants person. Experience in vegetable and fruit production and propagation work would be an advantage. The owners expect the garden to be maintained to a very high standard so the ideal candidate will pay attention to detail and work tidily.

The successful candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification and have proven experience working in a large private garden or a public garden.  Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) though desirable is not essential, however spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be an advantage.  You must be somebody who is organised, physically fit and able to work in a small team. Someone who is a fast learner, works to a high standard of professional finish, proactive and capable of working unsupervised generally once started off to maintain the garden's annual calendar and own daily work schedules effectively. References will be required for the successful candidate prior to starting work.

An energetic and experienced Gardener is sought after to maintain a private garden in beautiful part of the country, Northiam, East Sussex for 4 days per week.

The garden covers roughly about 2 acres of land and includes extensive lawns, shrubs, climbing roses, mixed borders, garden beds at the front of the house containing mixed shrubs and herbaceous, a pergola border in the cottage garden and a pond.

The owners have a real passion for their garden and are looking for an experienced gardener to manage the garden with minimal supervision and maintain the garden to a high horticultural standard. The gardener will be expected to undertake a range of normal gardening duties including weeding, pruning, planting etc. and there are a variety of plant pots around the property which the gardener will care for. During the summer months the owners supply cut flowers and the gardener would be responsible for the further development of the cut flower garden as well as the development of a beautiful spring path. The gardener would not be required to maintain the lawns and look after the woodland as these areas fall under the remit of the estate manager.

The ideal candidate will be a true plantsman, have good plant identification and knowledge of the seasons. Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification and have previous experience working on a private estate. Although sprays are used to a minimum, a spray certificate PA1/PA6 would be an advantage.

Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work alongside other staff. The gardener should be happy to work outside in all weathers, have the drive to get the job done to a high standard and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and driven gardener to maintain and enhance the beautiful gardens on a private family estate, located near Hastings. The Estate includes a 15-acre pleasure garden and is surrounded by pastures and woodland in the sunniest part of the country. 

The position reports into the Head Gardener and the successful candidate will join a friendly and horticulturally passionate team of six. On a rotational basis, the gardeners focus on horticultural duties such as maintaining and enhancing two long herbaceous and mixed borders of approximately 100 metres containing perennials in pastel colours, a hot border of mixed perennials and shrubs, a white border, a tropical border, cut flower garden, terrace, front of house borders and various other decorative areas. They are involved in the planting, pruning, winter preparations and keeping the garden to a high horticultural standard all year round. The successful applicant will also have the responsibility of mentoring the WRAGS trainees and volunteers in various aspects of gardening.

Good horticultural knowledge, a genuine passion for plants and a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification is required for the role. A spraying certificate PA1/6 would be an advantage, however, is not a requirement. Candidates should be prepared to work outside in all weathers, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. The property is open to the public several times a year and is also a private garden, therefore being presentable and personable at all times is important.  A full driving licence is essential.

In addition, the estate gardening team participate in a local in bloom, a community horticultural group devoted to enhancing the local village environment and support for this programme will be required (during the working day). All gardeners are also required to work one weekend per month for which they will be given time in lieu.
