Gardener - Live Out - EC3650

A superb opportunity has arisen for a Gardener to manage a 3 acre garden located within an active farm on the Surrey/Sussex/Kent borders near Edenbridge. The requirements of the role are maintenance and improvement of the whole garden through enhancement of the basic layout of the garden with input from the owners in terms of ideas and suggestions.

The garden comprises a small orchard and vegetable garden/fruit canes as well as beds and borders, yew hedges, large natural pond with a stream, sunken garden and fish pond and surrounding paved areas. There is also a lot of grass to be maintained amongst a variety of trees. There is a medium sized polytunnel and a range of garden tools and machinery. Additional items will be provided if needed.

Applicants will need to have at least 3 years hands on experience managing a similar garden combined with a horticultural qualification or a minimum of 10 years practical and relevant experience but without qualifications. You will have strong plant knowledge with ability to identify plant and understand how to prune/care for them as well as identity and deal with common garden pests and disease.

Experience of pruning and lopping small trees is desirable and ideally you will be qualified in using a chainsaw and also have PA1/PA6 spray certificates.  You should also have the ability to maintain lawns, borders and hard surface areas, e.g. gravel paths and paved areas.

As you will effectively be working on your own, the owners require a gardener who is willing to take full responsibility for the garden and arrange their work/days and hours of attendance to meet seasonal and weather needs.

 SALARY: A starting salary in the region of £19,000 to £23,000 to be reviewed in the light of performance after 6 months and thereafter annually.

Right now, one of our partners, Richmond Fellowship, is looking for a Horticultural Trainer to join the team at The Old Moat Garden Centre in Epsom. An integral part of the local community, we run a successful garden centre, cafe and plant nursery, and training and work‐based opportunities to adults with mental health problems. But, it’s only possible with the help of people like you.

You’ll assist with the operation of the Garden Centre, supervising and training of clients in the day to day operations and contribute to the development of the service. We’ll also rely on you to open the garden centre and serve customers to enable the sale of plants and associated products during the week as well as selected bank holidays and weekends. Providing horticultural advice and maintaining all plant stock in good condition will be important too, as will helping to assess risk and getting involved in team evaluations and reviews. And, when it comes to promoting an environment of service user involvement and recovery, again, you’ll be there, ready and willing to play your part.

As well as a proven ability to motivate and train others, including running group activities, you’ll need good time management skills and a creative yet practical approach to problem solving. Sole Estate Gardener - Live In - EC3527

A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced and well-rounded Sole Gardener on a beautiful private estate in Virginia Water, Surrey, with an on-site 1 bedroom cottage and pension contribution included.

The stunning garden covers approximately 2 acres and has been designed and managed to a very high standard.  Applicants must be skilled in their work, ideally with an academic horticultural qualification and have a genuine passion for their work.  Additional estate duties will be required of the successful candidate, as will the desire to take ownership and pride in the property in general.

Typical duties will include care of lawns, shrubs, pruning, weeding, and maintenance of small trees where necessary.  Applicants should have experience with small-scale propagation and glasshouse work, and be confident with growing vegetables organically.  The ideal candidate will possess good handyman skills; be able to tackle the variety of minor building/repair tasks that inevitably arise both in the garden and in the house, routine operation and maintenance of garden tools and machinery, touch-up painting and minor repair of garden features (such as fruit cages).  You should also be a confident driver, to assist with airport runs and very occasional evening events, and be willing to manage contractors when on site. The successful applicant will also be responsible for security of the property, as the owners are frequently located abroad.

The ideal candidate will have good plant identification skills and horticultural knowledge as well as a positive attitude and good attention to detail. You must be reliable, trustworthy and loyal, with basic computer skills and a flexible approach to your work. You should possess or be able to obtain a CRB check (criminal record check).  The successful candidate should be available for a New Year start.  Hours of work will be 08:15 – 17:15.  Summer hours (June – Aug) 08:15 - 18:15 Mon to Fri. Winter hours (Dec – Feb) 08:15 – 16:15 Mon to Fri.  A one hour lunch break is provided year-round.
