Part-Time Gardener (Live Out) - EC3249

A wonderful opportunity has arisen in the idyllic setting of rural West Dorset for an experienced and knowledgeable part-time Gardener. The position is offered on an employed or self-employed basis, and will be in support of an existing live-in part-time gardener. A higher, negotiable hourly rate is offered to candidates wishing to take on the role on a self-employed basis.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced gardener looking to reduce their current hours, or add to existing work by assisting in the management of a private garden for a friendly and interested estate owner. You will be in close contact with the property owners and the existing gardener, so you must be personable, presentable, positive in your outlook and trustworthy by nature. The live-in gardener works one or two days per week, so you will be providing support and expertise on a 3-day week basis.

The period property, set on the edge of a small Dorset village, is privately owned and is usually only open to visitors on rare occasions such as ‘open garden’ events. The property is largely surrounded by high hedges with a vegetable garden including fruit cages, a heated glasshouse used for propagation, a small greenhouse and polytunnel. Although fruit and vegetables are grown on site, this is limited to higher value crops and is not the main focus of the garden. Approximately half of the 4.5 acre estate comprises of paddocks and woodland with the other half consisting of lawns, including a croquet lawn, borders, flower beds (fuchsias being a particular favourite), an apple orchard, specimen trees and a swimming pool. The garden is well equipped with a range of tools including roller mowers, blower, chainsaw, strimmer and a John Deere tractor mower. Experience with each of the above is essential.

Spray (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certification (CS30/CS31) must be held as well as experience with ride-on mowers and, preferably the ability to undertake general garden handyman duties when required. The suitable candidate will ideally hold a horticultural qualification, though applicants with extensive horticultural experience and knowledge will certainly be considered.

The position would suit a gardener looking to scale back on hours, or someone keen to build their existing client base locally on a three day per week basis.

Salary is £12 per hour if employed.
