We are looking to appoint a Gardener to join our team responsible for the maintenance and general condition of our grounds (covering both School sites and including extensive sports facilities). The role-holder will assist the Head Gardener with general maintenance of gardens, planters and planting beds.

The role-holder will predominantly work from the Reed’s School site in Cobham but will be required to work from the Ripley Court site as required.

The role-holder will work for 40 hours per week with the ability to work flexible shift patterns (e.g. weekends on a rota). You will have demonstrable experience of working within a similar role with good general knowledge of horticulture. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and creative with a keen eye for detail.

To support our exciting work, we are seeking a Director of Conservatories to join us to lead in all aspects of horticulture within our iconic Conservatories i.e. Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, Floral Fantasy. Leading this department of more than 30 horticultural staff, you will steer the ideation, artistic conception and development of the Conservatories’ signature thematic floral displays, while overseeing teams involved in the landscape, tree and plant management within the domes, with rigorous maintenance and growth of living plant collections e.g. orchids, begonias, succulents. You will have a keen focus in ensuring high quality display outcomes, plant care and health, as well as infrastructural maintenance and enhancements in support of our strategic vision of being a world-class garden. You will also ensure adherence to corporate and financial governance, manage budget, oversee proper plant procurement processes, curation of programmes and events complementing our displays, and will be highly involved in the collaboration with embassies and stakeholders, hosting of local dignitaries and international delegates visiting the Gardens. You should also have experience in managing issues which may affect botanical institutions, especially in the areas of biodiversity conservation and sustainability in the horticulture industry.

Working towards the SMART Gardens vision, you shall work with partners to adopt science and technology to resolve horticultural challenges and enhance floriculture for the Gardens’ Conservatories, while pushing the boundaries for technological advancements and breakthroughs in enhancing horticultural excellence and workflow within the organization. While leading your teams through a new era of digital transformation at the workplace as well as within the tourism industry, you will ensure motivation, growth, development and nurture of your teams while raising the bar and maintaining at the forefront of botanical knowledge. You will also ensure the application of best industry practices, techniques and methodologies, and expand outreach and connection to external networks with internationally renowned gardens and institutions for collaboration opportunities and learning capacities, and present Gardens by the Bay at international conferences and fora. As a critical part of the Management team, you will strive to maintain our iconic brand as a world class garden and premier leisure horticultural destination.

Key Functions

-Work with the Conservatory Operations teams to formulate a floral display Masterplan, as well as have broad oversight of the plant range and health of Gardens by the Bay’s unique landscape, thematic gardens and Conservatories' collections.

-Develop and codify a comprehensive and effective landscape and plant management plan that ensures consistency in best horticultural practices to reinforce early design principles that have incorporated the existing plantings within the Conservatories.

-Work with the design team to implement attractive and high quality changing floral displays and permanent exhibits in the Conservatories and source for suitable annuals, sustainable perennials and woody specimens by critically assessing their growing conditions for these displays.

-Actively promote and contribute to the Gardens’ sustainability initiatives in landscape and gardens management.

-Create educational value by informing visitors the importance of plants and wildlife through creative interpretation and cogent narratives.

-Lead in the fertigation management of the Cloud Forest plants by understanding the components and operation of the Dosatron dosing pumping system and nutrients delivery to ensure the plants are always maintained in excellent health and display conditions.

Requirements

-A good Degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science or equivalent. A Masters or PhD in these disciplines will also be favorably considered.

-At least 12 years of experience as a professional horticulturist, with a minimum of 8 years in management and supervisory role in leading a team of middle management horticulturists

-Expert and in-depth knowledge of sub-tropical and temperate plants and their viable growing conditions

-Proven competence in plant and landscape management, and curation of creative plant visuals and displays

-Good communication skills and well versed in interpretative horticulture, with a keen attention to detail

-Keen ability to grow our clientele base and visitorship through the use of innovative and attractive floral and horticultural displays

-An active participant in team situations and able to work across different cultures

-Excellent management, supervisory, communication and leadership skills as well as ability to lead teams of diverse professionals to drive our core business as a horticultural attraction forward

Part Time Skilled Gardener - EC3798

An opportunity has arisen for a skilled and qualified gardener to look after newly constructed gardens to a private house in South Kensington, London, for two full days per week on a self-employed basis.

The beautiful newly constructed gardens (front and rear) have been designed by Ian Kitson and Julie Toll, both of whom will have ongoing involvement in the garden.  

Key tasks include lawn care, perennial plant care, specimen shrub planting and shaping, mulching, weeding, training climbers, leaf clearance, paving cleaning and operation of the irrigation system.  The client can provide all maintenance machinery and tools on site so as to ensure the successful applicant will not have to transport these on each work day.

Applicants must be experienced and qualified horticulturalists who can confidently manage trees, shrubs, lawns and perennial borders. An academic horticultural qualification and spray certificates would be beneficial, though demonstrable gardening experience is paramount.  Candidates with extensive experience of gardening on private estates are encouraged to apply.

Head Gardener - EC3747

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced and qualified Head / Senior Gardener to manage an existing team in Tonbridge, Kent.  The position would suit senior gardeners with demonstrable staff and garden management experience and excellent attention to detail.

The expansive gardens encompass sports fields, mature trees and shrubs, mixed beds and borders, manicured lawns, ponds, tennis courts, mixed hedges, as well as numerous paths and hardstanding.  Numerous greenhouses are located within the site and as such, development and plant propagation will also be the responsibility of the new Head Gardener.  In addition to the main grounds, approximately 20 small gardens will require scheduled management by the garden team.

The successful applicant will be able to provide supervision and guidance to a small team and will report to the Commercial and Operations Director on a regular basis in relation to seasonal plans and overall improvement of the gardens.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience and confidence in the management of garden budgets, planning and scheduling, external contractors, health and safety, and associated record keeping.  A basic level of computer literacy is required in order to ensure the above records and processes are managed efficiently.  Basic knowledge of Arboriculture would also be of benefit.

The new Head Gardener will be able to appoint landscape architects and associated contractors, ensuring correct checks are in place and with a view to developing the site through major projects.  The development work will be overseen by the Head Gardener in order to ensure the quality of work is to specification and within budget.

Applicants should hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification as well as spray (PA1/6) and ideally a chainsaw certificate (CS30/31).  Experience with a full range of garden machinery is required, i.e. hedge cutters, ride-on and pedestrian mowers, blowers etc.  Candidates should be capable of carrying out annual reviews of the garden team members and will be an effective manager in terms of staff development and discipline.  A good level of physical fitness is required as this is a hands-on garden management role.
