Job Description

The job requires someone with an understanding and skills in all aspects of landscape activities including brick, stone, paving and wood work with the ability to accurately set out levels and locations, operate diggers, breakers and other mechanical tools, and supervise concrete deliveries etc.

The candidate should be self-motivating with a can-do attitude.

This is a hands-on role involving all activities required to complete significant projects.

As the company expands this individual should be able and willing to run a site and installation team with minimal supervision, communicate well with clients and cooperate with the designers who are generally responsible for final acceptance of the finished project.

The candidate should have a full driving licence and own vehicle.

Additional Information

The area of operation is generally the North, West and South London and associated home counties (Oxford, Bucks Berks, Surrey) etc. Where practical and economically viable other areas will be considered. (They currently have a project being completed in South Cambridge for example.).

Head Gardener - Live Out - EC6560

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced, physically fit and hands-on Head Gardener to lead a small friendly team on a stunning and unique estate in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, on a full-time basis.  Applicants should be experienced Head or Senior Gardeners with a thorough understanding of seasonal horticultural practices, have excellent plant knowledge and ideally, academic horticultural qualifications at RHS Level 3 or above/equivalent.  Good physical fitness is of paramount importance for this role, as is a genuine love of plants.  

This stunning eight-acre garden was designed by Isabel & Julian Bannerman in 1998 and has now become the home of a renowned biennial sculpture exhibition.  There are some smaller open days and group visits but for much of the time, the garden is private and quiet. 

The successful applicant will work alongside and manage a small team of part-time staff, freelancers and occasional volunteers.  The Head Gardener will work closely with the owner and must be sympathetic to the original garden design.

Duties may include:
  • Pruning (especially Roses)
  • Hedge Cutting
  • Lake and stream maintenance
  • Orchard pruning and management
  • Basic woodland maintenance
  • Development and year-round maintenance of wildflower areas
  • Development and maintenance of formal borders, herbaceous and shrubs
  • Ordering of seeds, plants and garden sundries
  • Advising on the necessity for arboricultural work
  • Weed and pest control of the site using organic methods
  • Seasonal bulb planting
  • Plan and implementation planting schemes
  • Production and management of all compost and mulch (in-house)
  • Maintenance of all lawn areas, drives and pathways
  • Management of irrigation system

  • Working with sculptors and curators during exhibition

The estate utilises organic principles throughout the garden. A significant portion of the role will include rose pruning, so applicants are required to have demonstrable experience in this area.

Good attention to detail, a common sense approach, strong communication skills and the ability to provide instruction with a positive, constructive manner are essential.  Applicants must have good time management and planning abilities.

This position offers plenty of scope for initiative and creativity and will bring significant reward to the successful candidate.  Working hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work (with overtime paid).  A full driving licence is required for this position.

Skilled Gardener - Live Out - EC6506

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Skilled Gardener to work alongside, and provide guidance to, an existing small team of gardeners on a beautiful private estate in Hertfordshire.  The impressive period property is framed by gardens designed by a highly respected Chelsea Gold Medal winning designer.  The new Skilled Gardener, along with the team, will liaise with the Head Gardener on a regular basis and impart their horticultural knowledge to the team from a hands-on perspective.

The privately-owned estate encompasses approximately 40-acres, of which five are gardens maintained to a very high standard.  The gardens are open once a year at the end of May as part of the NGS scheme, and as testament to their popularity, have broken the regional record for the most successful turnout in a day.  The varied site includes a ¾ acre walled garden, a 4 ¼ acre ornamental garden with water features, trees, shrubs, perennials and a long list of additional elements, ornamental plants and areas beyond.  Glasshouses on site are used for propagation, growing vegetables, overwintering citrus and a few ornamentals.  The remainder of the estate encompasses paddocks/ménage, a tennis court, parkland and a swimming pool.  The garden team are noted for their small but much-praised production of fruit and vegetables, of which some are used for home-made preserves and juices. The estate also provides a home for various animals; a small herd of Dexter cattle, Texel sheep, chickens and horses. 

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate gardeners who possess excellent horticultural knowledge and a positive, friendly character.  Chemical spray certificate and chainsaw licenses are both desirable, but not essential.  The successful applicant will be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills and excellent horticultural knowledge.  Applicants should also have demonstrable experience on horticulturally diverse private estates, academic horticultural qualifications and good knowledge of plant propagation, kitchen gardening, glasshouse work, specialist pruning techniques, and particularly of ornamental horticulture and of efficient seasonal garden management.  Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is necessary, as is the ability to provide guidance to colleagues with diplomacy and a positive attitude.

A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role (as accommodation is not provided).  Applicants should possess genuine enthusiasm for horticulture and gardens in general, and should have a ‘can-do’ attitude and a good sense of humour.

Head Gardener - Live In - EC6500 - this position has now been filled

Our client is seeking a hands-on Head Gardener with drive and enthusiasm, who will relish the challenge of a recently refurbished garden and grounds near Newbury, keeping them to a high horticultural standard and taking part in the onward development of the gardens as a whole.

The 50-acre site underwent extensive re-development three years ago with the guidance of designers and consultants. The gardens are made up of ornamental borders (especially around the main house), a newly restored walled garden (for fruit, vegetables and cut flowers), an existing apple orchard, a lake and natural pond, woodland gardens, meadows, mature and newly planted parkland and a tennis court. The gardens are maintained organically and there is also a glasshouse for propagation and house plants.

The successful applicant will be hands on, manage two existing staff and will be involved in recruiting a third to complete the team. They will be responsible for the woodland, parkland, borders, walled garden and the glasshouse. They will report to the owners of the house and will liaise with the house manager and chef to provide fruit, vegetables and cut flowers for the house therefore kitchen gardening experience is essential.

Applicants should have previously been a Senior or Head Gardener on a private estate. They should have enthusiasm and passion to maintain the gardens to the highest level and to keep them moving forward, developing new areas. They should have excellent communication and man-management skills and be self-motivated. They will enjoy working as part of a team, leading the garden team and collaborating with others across the estate. Excellent plant knowledge, horticultural skills and experience of organic gardening are essential. They must hold a full UK driving licence.

A small two-bedroom cottage is available for the successful candidate. The cottage is off site, about a 15 minute drive away, and council tax will be covered by the employer. All other bills such as internet and electricity are the tenant’s responsibility. Partners, children and pets are welcome.
