A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a skilled gardener to develop and maintain a stunning garden surrounding a grade one historic house near Maidstone.

The 4-acre garden has a range of areas from densely planted, through formal, to “natural” water garden and parkland. It consists of box and yew hedging, lavender, herbaceous and mixed beds, vegetable garden, a number of notable mature trees including a large Lebanese cedar, a large pond with aquatic plants, manicured lawns and a professional greenhouse used for propagation.

The skilled gardener will be expected to further develop the garden and provide input on the regular spring planting of trees, shrubs and bedding plants. He / She will manage the garden to a high horticultural standard and have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. The skilled gardener will work closely with the owners on the development and alongside a specialist lawns and hedges gardener.  

In addition to the garden, the successful applicant will be responsibility for the swimming pool, the large greenhouse and the estate machinery. He / She will be trustworthy and their help with deliveries and giving contractors access to the house in the owner’s absence is also required.

Applicants will ideally hold a level 2 / 3 horticultural qualification, combined with good plant and tree knowledge, excellent technical skills and previous experience working on private estates. PA1/PA6 spray certificates would be an advantage and the ability to operate and maintain a range of garden machinery is required for the role.  Knowledge of maintaining ponds and water gardens would be an advantage.

A generous annual salary is provided for the successful applicant plus a performance related bonus worth one month’s salary at Christmas.

Garden Team Leader - C996

A great opportunity has arisen for a Garden Team Leader to join an established company located to the west of Etchingham, Kent.  The company has been in business for over 30 years - a testament to their continued provision of quality service in the gardening and landscape industry.

The company now requires a Garden Team Leader to work alongside and supervise one existing gardener on a full-time basis.  The Team Leader will manage their own gardens and on occasion, will deputise on the gardens of their Team Leader colleagues.  The ideal candidate will hold a recognised horticultural qualification and/or considerable experience, will be competent with a range of grounds maintenance machinery and equipment and will be used to working within a team and on their own initiative.  Applicants for this role must have excellent plant identification skills and garden management experience, ideally on horticulturally diverse private estates.

The role will predominantly involve supervising one assistant gardener and tending to numerous, primarily domestic gardens on a scheduled, rotational basis.  The role will also include the maintenance and ongoing development of a 5-acre Sussex garden, designed by Jo Gibbons.  A driving licence is essential for this role.  You will be required to assist with various one-off projects of a similar nature on a full-time basis during the winter months, which will ensure your continued year-round employment and offer an opportunity to add to your existing skill set.

Applicants will need to be competent with a range of garden machinery (and basic maintenance thereof) as you will be expected to undertake duties including hedge cutting, lawn maintenance, pruning, planting, bed/border maintenance, and be willing to carry out a range of other gardening tasks as they arise.  Competence with back-pack sprayers and a spray ticket (PA1/PA6) is desired.

Applicants must be conscientious and well presented as interaction with property owners on site will be necessary.  Candidates will be diplomatic and have a positive in approach to the management of gardeners in training, be flexible in their approach to work, physically fit and have a ‘can-do’ attitude.  Uniforms are provided.  A full UK driving licence is essential, as is your own car for travel to and from the rural yard.  The business shuts down between Christmas and New Year.

A position has become available for a Planting Team Supervisor for projects based in the South East.

Job Description:

The role will involve leading a team of operatives planting semi-mature trees and instant hedging. Most of the work is based in the Buckinghamshire area but some jobs will involve staying away overnight.  Your duties will include:

  • Effectively leading, motivating and training other team members
  • Planting of semi-mature trees to correct horticultural practice
  • Use heavy machinery for transporting the trees and hedges such as mini- excavators and telehandlers
  • Have good understanding of site health and safety procedures
Key Skills:

Candidates should have proven experience with leading a team by example. You will have previous experience with planting large trees and instant hedges and completing projects to a high standard. Candidates should be physically fit and happy to be working outdoors at all times of the year. You will be a good communicator and reliable and well presented. Candidates should have a horticultural qualification and an SSSTS and first aid certificates.

Machinery tickets and the ability to tow trailers will be an advantage however training will be available for the right candidate.

Hours are 40 hours per week paid on an hourly rate of £12.50- £14 ph (DOE). Over time is available at time and a half, typically 4-12 hours a week in the busy periods. Holiday is 28 days including Bank Holidays per year.
