Head Gardener

Ref - EC10687

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a qualified and experienced Head Gardener to lead a small team on a beautiful private estate near Alresford, Hampshire.  The welcoming family currently employ 2 skilled gardeners and are looking for a knowledgeable Head Gardener to come onboard to manage the garden and lead the team.

Built in the late 1700’s, the Grade II listed house is situated within 45-acres of parkland with formal gardens of approximately 13-acres, originally laid out by Richard Woods; a contemporary of Capability Brown.  The grounds have been painstakingly restored to the original plans in several phases over the years, most recently since 2004 by the current owner, with more sensitive restoration planned.  The property owners are passionate about the gardens, such that only tree, shrub and flower species available in the mid-1700’s, have been used in the restoration.

The formal aspect of the garden includes expansive lawns, hedges, a pool, herbaceous borders, a large kitchen garden, mixed beds/borders, ornamental shrubberies, young and mature/ancient specimen trees with woodland walks, topiary, a considerable Ha-ha and much more, all with impressive vistas across the estate and surrounding South Downs.

As Head Gardener you will be responsible for all aspects of the gardens and therefore need to be self-motivated, proficient at organising your own routine and staff under your supervision whilst being able to remain flexible in your approach to work.

Applicants for this position will ideally be academically qualified to Level 2 or above and are confident in their plant knowledge, with excellent attention to detail, can implement good health and safety in the garden, and are driven to inspire a committed team of gardeners. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw competence certification are desirable and a full clean driving licence, good physical fitness and experience with a wide range of garden machinery are required for the role.

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified and experienced Head Gardener to join a historically significant estate and garden, lead a driven team, and work for friendly and interested employers.

Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener required

An excellent career development opportunity has arisen for a talented and qualified gardener to join a private estate at an early stage of garden development.  The Grade 2 listed property is framed by a half-acre garden and 10-acres of surrounding farmland and is currently undergoing a redesign by an award-winning design team, Julie Toll and Ian Kitson.  Planting is due to start in late Spring 2020.

The existing garden comprises shrub beds, lawns and ornamental planting, a tennis court and newly refurbished swimming pool and a polythene tunnel which houses tender Mediterranean plants.  The garden and planting will continue to be developed with designer Julie Toll, whose specialism is planting design, meadow establishment and garden aftercare.  The client is very keen on wildlife and wishes to slowly convert the meadows from year-round grazing to wildflower meadows.  Garden waste will be composted as much as possible for use within the garden.

The new garden will provide a refreshed and newly landscaped entrance courtyard, formal gardens, terraces and an entertainment garden.  The new areas account for 700m2 of new perennial planting with associated shrub, ornamental specimens, young trees and topiary.

The Sole Gardener will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of all aspects of the garden, though will benefit from guidance, support and direction at certain times from Julie Toll, particularly during the implementation and early after care phases.  In addition to the maintenance of the formal gardens, the Sole Gardener will be responsible for the 10-acres of fields associated with the property which are currently being grazed by sheep but will be developed with the new gardener to wildflower meadows for late Spring to Summer this year.  The future development of a kitchen garden is a possibility and will be at the discretion of the new gardener and the property owner.

The successful applicant will be an academically qualified and experienced hands-on gardener with good physical fitness, enthusiasm, and a proven ability to work well on their own.  Applicants will have a love of trees, shrubs and perennials and must have excellent species-specific pruning skills.  Spray, chainsaw certification and a full UK driving licence are desirable.  Hours of work are yet to be determined, though the work week will comprise 40 hours.  The position is offered with 20-days’ holiday plus Bank Holidays.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced gardener with good time management skills to join a new garden project alongside a celebrated design team at an exciting stage of development.  The client is keen for the suitable applicant to start as soon as possible so as to ensure involvement with the planting aspect of the project.

Sole Gardener - EC10782

A genuine lifestyle job opportunity has arisen on a stunning 70-acre estate near Newbury in Berkshire.  This position will suit an academically qualified and experienced horticulturist with proven hands-on garden management experience and a desire to join a new garden at an exciting phase of development.  This Sole Gardener role is offered with a two-bedroom cottage on site with its own garden, in addition to a generous salary.

The formal one-acre garden is in the process of being designed by a renowned garden designer and is due for the first phase of implementation in spring/summer 2020.

In a formal to natural contrast, the new design will encompass the immediate area around the main house and will graduate outwards towards 70-acres of farmland via garden rooms containing new and existing trees, lawns/grassland, streams and a one-acre lake.  The diversity of planting and complexity of garden management will therefore be greatest in the area surrounding the house, with the further reaching areas requiring little more than maintenance and monitoring.  Upon completion, the garden will comprise a greenhouse and kitchen garden, and orchard, swimming pool, terraces, with wildflower two-acres of meadows and lakeside planting.   Additional aspects will include cloud Buxus, pleached trees, yew hedges, fruit trees, hedges of English lavender, sculpture(s), climbing roses, a croquet lawn and wildlife pond.

The ideal candidate will be a positive, knowledgeable and helpful person with a thorough grasp of horticulture and good physical fitness.  The property owner is actively looking to create a happy environment for all which will provide reward and a sense of belonging for all involved with the estate.  Applicants should hold academic horticultural qualifications and/or extensive experience on private estate from a garden management perspective.  Knowledge and experience in each of the above garden areas is required, as is an ability to monitor and maintain other areas of the estate, i.e. the lake and boundaries.  A flexible and friendly gardener is sought, as there may be a requirement to undertake rare ‘emergency’ school runs, i.e. once every 8-weeks, as well as basic pool maintenance etc.

There is a focus on ecologically sensitive garden management/development and a general interest in nature on the property.  Suitable candidates will therefore have a genuine interest in this area and be willing to pass on their knowledge where the opportunity arises.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic gardener to join a welcoming private estate on a full-time live-in basis, and to be involved in the implementation of the stunning new design from the beginning.  The position is offered exclusively as a live-in, as the client would like the successful applicant to be able to keep an eye on the property in their absence.  The two-bedroom property comes with Council tax and rent paid by the employer, with utility bills remaining the responsibility of the occupant.  A full driving licence, criminal background check and references will be asked of each applicant.

Sole Gardener

Sole Gardener required

An excellent opportunity has arisen on a beautiful privately owned arts and crafts garden in Surrey.  The partially designed Gertrude Jekyll garden sits within half a mile of the local train station and beside SSSI woodland.

The formal privately-owned garden is listed and has featured in garden literature over the last 100 years, though it is not currently open to the public.  The property owner contributes on an ad hoc basis when time allows and is now in need of a new Sole Gardener, following the amicable departure of the previous incumbent after 7-years’ service.

The formal gardens encompass 6 acres with a further 5 acres of SSSI woodland.  The gardens have been restored in part to their original structure over the past 20-years and comprise a stunning sunken garden with octagonal lily pond, a walled winter garden, a lime walk and a circular garden with shrubbery.  An original rose garden of one acre, which had fallen into disrepair under previous ownership, has been redesigned by Simon Dorrell and is now fully established.  The gardens contain extensive yew and some box hedging with some topiary, several lawns, herbaceous borders, shrubberies, orchard, three ponds, mature trees and numerous architectural features including bargate walls.  The grounds also include a large greenhouse, cold frames, a potting shed, a workshop, a garden yard and various outbuildings.  The woodland (which was originally a hazel coppice) slopes steeply down to a river approximately 80-metres below the property.  A management plan has been agreed in conjunction with Natural England, the implementation of which has been underway for several years.

The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience of managing large private gardens on their own and of maintaining high standards.  Help may be brought in where necessary, i.e. in response to seasonal demands.  Applicants must hold an academic horticultural qualification(s) at Level 2 or above, excellent plant knowledge and physical fitness, competency with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery as well as excellent time management skills and self-motivation.

This is an excellent opportunity for a local candidate to join a friendly and welcoming estate and manage a stunning arts and crafts garden autonomously.  The position will suit a physically fit and knowledgeable gardener with excellent time management skills and an ability to prioritise their workload.  Applicants need not possess a driving licence for the role, but should be living within a reasonable commuting distance.
