Job Description:

As a member of the team, you must have comprehensive experience and knowledge of working in gardens to a high standard, an understanding of managing gardens annually, and dealing with plants with the correct horticultural practice. Your duties will include: -

  • Competent at the annual management of various gardens, solely or in a team, to ensure that quality and visual appearance are maximised through correct horticultural practice. To include:
  • Topiary, trees & hedges, annual lawn care, organic vegetable & fruit, plant care & pruning, pest & disease control, plant fertilisation, flower bed on going management, seasonal pot displays, machinery, and tool management.
  • Be customer and standards focused and always demand the best – whether that be from your own work or that of your colleagues.
  • Aware of all practices garden related.
  • Plan, implement and achieve garden maintenance schedules using provided digital software.
  • Provide proactive excellent customer service and provide good advice to customers, understanding their garden requirements.
  • Be able to suggest improvements to the garden, pruning, planting, border layout, P&D management.
  • Managing, motivating, and instructing a team of staff and ensuring suitable standards are met.
  • Ensuring health & safety standards are achieved.
Key Skills:
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience within the industry managing a range of gardening skills annually.
  • A RHS Level 2 certificate in horticulture or equivalent experience.
  • Able to reliably commute to a location in Puttenham, Surrey before work commences.
  • A genuine interest in gardens, working outdoors, and horticulture.
  • A drive to progress in your future career.
  • An understanding of plants and trees, including botanical names, pests, diseases, and management requirements.
  • Knowledge and use of general garden duties, organisation and management of gardens, pedestrian mowers, hedge trimmers, general garden machinery.

Assistant Head Gardener

A friendly, motivated and all rounded Assistant Head Gardener is required to work closely with the Head Gardener to further develop the gardens of a beautiful Grade II* listed 16th century Farmhouse based in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. The position is full time and permanent.

The peaceful and private 29-acre estate is a stable yard with the majority of acreage is pasture for the horses.  Separated by a Ha-ha ensuring uninterrupted views, the well-maintained gardens surrounding the property include formal gardens, Parterre, Herbaceous borders, rose garden, walled garden, vegetable garden, 3 greenhouses including a beautiful Hartley botanic greenhouse, Koi Pond, Old woodland, ancient oaks and wisteria.

The Assistant Head Gardener will be an arts and crafts gardener with a focus on specialist pruning, kitchen gardening, training and greenhouse management. He / She will be hands on carrying out the planting, sowing, pruning, growing, creative input and design ideas would be welcome, pest & disease treatments, planting and harvesting the produce which is shared on the estate. It is a diverse role so flexibility is key, the successful candidate will also assist with the general maintenance of the garden such as the mowing, strimming and weeding and the clients outsources the hedge cutting. Additional duties may be required such as occasional feeding and care of dogs (Great Dane and 2 dachshunds).

Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification RHS or a recognised horticultural qualification and / or experience working on a private estate. Experience with Spray certificates PA1/PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous but not essential as training can be provided. Applicants will have shown longevity and are looking for a long-term opportunity on a diverse and friendly estate. He / She must work well with others and be confident with their plant knowledge. Horse and animal lover is a plus!

The working hours are 5-day week Monday to Friday 8am -5pm with an hour for lunch. Flexibility is important as occasionally a half day on the weekend maybe required for watering in the greenhouse or when the owners are away for which time off in lieu will be given.

Sole Gardener

An all rounded hands-on Sole Gardener is sought for a stunning Georgian private property surrounded by 22 acres situated near the market town of Chipping Ongar in the Epping Forest District of Essex. The buildings consist of the Main House, a converted guest Barn and a delightful 2-bedroom Lodge Gate house for the Gardener. 

The 22 acres grounds consist of 7 acres of mature gardens surrounding the main house and the further away from the property, the more naturalist the surroundings become. There are 15 acres of meadows, a pond, and a variety of mature specimen trees. There is a long gravel driveway to the front of the house, significant and expansive lawns, topiary, water feature with potted plants, herbaceous beds and borders, variety of roses, a large greenhouse this is currently not used and a kitchen garden - an opportunity for the gardener to use for propagation and growing vegetables.

The principals are looking for a friendly live in gardener with a happy, calm, and positive attitude and the ability to following instructions. The successful applicant will have a love of gardens to maintain the existing garden and grounds, be hardworking, a self-starter and require low management whilst being conscious and mindful of the owner’s privacy when in residence.

The Gardener duties include most aspects of maintaining the grounds and outbuildings, although external specialist contractors are used e.g. tree surgeons for annual high hedging and other major repairs. More specifically, duties include lawn mowing and turf management, general maintenance – pruning, weeding and edging, maintaining the herbaceous Beds, kitchen gardening, glasshouse growing and pest and disease control. Candidates will have experience using and the basic maintenance of garden machinery and equipment.

Other duties must be attended to include keeping gutters and drains clear, raking the gravel drive, maintaining security of the grounds e.g. dealing with the alarm company when required, liaison for visiting contractors, tradesmen and deliveries and putting out the bins weekly. A keen eye for detail is necessary with a positive approach to attend to repairs and jobs immediately.

Working hours are March to October 8 am to 6 pm, Mon – Fri and November to February 8 am to 4 pm, Mon – Fri. The owners may occasionally require assistance with feeding the cats some weekends when we are away.

A generous salary is provided with the vacancy along with a separate 2 bed furnished Cottage with own garden and garage plus all normal house bills e.g. energy, wifi and council tax bills are covered by the employer as well as the use of a car. An outdoor cat or small well-behaved dog would be considered but unfortunately the property is not suitable for dependents.

The owners are also open to the partner working in a part time role as housekeeper carrying out duties such as cleaning, some laundry and feeding the cats etc. Excellent terms for 3 or 4 days a week/ 6 hours per day could be discussed.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General gardening duties will include but are not limited to fine lawn care, pruning, propagating, weeding, topiary management, edging and hedge cutting. The owner is passionate about their garden and want to keep them to an immaculate standard Imagination, flare and an appreciation of textures, colours and sequential bloom will be required for driving the gardens forward. Other duties will include the occasional collection/delivery of vehicles to locations prior to the owners arrival. Such vehicles may also require delivery for servicing.  

The owners divide their time between properties and there may be times duties cannot be carried out due to the owners requiring family privacy; however, the Sole Gardener will be given a schedule of visits and consulted on this matter. Also within the grounds is a cutting garden dominated by roses for much of the year, bred by the late David Austin, but the planting is informal and they are mixed with dahlias and peonies; this is adjoined to the immaculate potager. General maintenance duties will include but are not limited to pruning, propagating, weeding, edging and compost management. The owners are passionate about their garden and want likeminded people to help the gardens continue to flourish. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery is essential as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification being desirable for this position.

This role is based on a 4-day week with working hours 8am – 4pm, on a PAYE basis.

Groundsperson

An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated and hands on Groundsperson to work within a small team on a stunning 250-acre private country estate based in Surrey. This opportunity would suit an enthusiastic, self-motivated, friendly and well-presented individual, with good communication skills, and who is happy to work with the team or alone.

The estate is set across two areas, the gardens surrounding the main house consists of a 3-acre lake, kitchen garden that provide the house with fruit and vegetables, fruit trees, ornamental walled garden with folly and different seating areas which are regularly enjoyed. There are two greenhouses attached; a lean-to greenhouse and a nectarine house on the opposite side used to grow citrus trees. Up to about 6 acres around the main house is fenced in to protect the garden from deer and rabbits. Wisteria was brought in from Italy a few years back and has grown incredibly well creating a beautiful effect. Other areas include a pergola walk, several water features, herbaceous borders flanking the canal shaped lily pond, shrub borders and pots with bougainvillea and various plants. The house is perched on the top of a hill with expansive views to one side and a pinetum with large conifers and a variety of mature trees.

The gardens are continuously evolving, and the new owners are keen on conservation with the outer areas of the estate becoming increasingly important with time. Where the gardens were originally laid out in the early 2000 as more formal, the owners now are creating a more nature balanced environment, encouraging biodiversity and attracting birds such as ducks and geese to the ponds and bees by growing lush lawns and creating wildflower areas.

The Groundsperson will work as part of a team across the whole estate, reporting into their knowledgeable and longstanding Head Gardener. Duties will include mowing, stimming, hedge cutting, fencing, track maintenance, woodland maintenance (chainsaw use), and general maintenance of gardens and grounds around the buildings. Additional skills such as carpentry and general handy man jobs would be welcomed but not essential.

Applicants must have proven practical experience in grounds and estate work with a high-level attention to detail, a good understanding of safe working practices, chainsaw certificates and experience with garden machinery including hedge cutters, ride on and walk behind mowers and compact tractors with the attachments like flails and toppers. Experience with full size tractor with a loader, JCB / excavator and ATV would be advantageous. Certificates are required but training can be provided. A full UK driving licence is essential due to the rural location of the property and on offer, references and a clear CRB check is required.

A competitive salary is provided with the role as well as 23 days holiday plus bank holidays and discretionary bonuses. Working hours are 07:30 to 16:30 Monday to Friday, with one hour each day for breaks and all staff are required to adhere to the no smoking policy on site.
