An exciting opportunity has arisen for a live in Sole Gardener to join the garden of a 16th century Grade II* listed private property located near Ludlow, Shropshire. The owners now require an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large, high-end garden, to assist with the ongoing maintenance and future development of the garden and grounds to a continued high standard. This is a full-time permanent position.

Boasting magnificent views, the gardens are roughly 11-acres in size, with elements including formal lawns, herbaceous borders, perennial beds, small pond, organic vegetable garden, greenhouse, a small woodland and orchard. The gardens are currently under construction with a swimming pool and gym in the process of being built, with completion estimated for 2025. After completion there will be extensive work carried out within the garden, with the client bringing in a Chelsea multi-award winner to create bespoke new areas. The Sole Gardener will be directly involved with the implementation of the scheme and with its development and maintenance thereafter.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with at least 3 years’ experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards, are qualities which are essential for this role. The individual should be an excellent communicator and have a good sense of humour. Working closely with the Estate Manager, there will be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out within the estate therefore candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General gardening duties will include but are not limited to fine lawn care, pruning, propagating, kitchen gardening, weeding, hoeing, clearing, topiary management, edging and hedge cutting. The Sole Gardener will also be responsible for seasonal planting and providing cut flowers for the main house. Also on site are 2 beehives of which the Sole Gardener will maintain and manage, with training provided if the successful candidate does not have experience with bees. The owners are passionate about their garden and want to keep them to an immaculate standard. Experience in the use of and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery including tractors, as well as a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. 

A 2-bedroom coach house on site, is available to the successful candidate. Council tax and utility bills are covered by the employer, with partners, dependants and pets welcome; dogs must be well behaved and socialise well with other dogs. The owners divide their time between properties and as this is a live in role the Sole Gardener will share security responsibilities with other staff on site. Candidates will need to hold a full driver’s licence due to the location of the property.

Working hours for this role are 8am – 5pm Sunday to Thursday, or Tuesday to Saturday; with annual leave bring 20 days plus Bank Holidays.

Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to take ownership of a beautiful private estate located near Littlehampton, West Sussex.  This position would suit a presentable and time-served experienced gardener/horticulturalist with a good work ethic, good physical fitness and the ability to plan their own work and time.

The three acre private garden is partitioned into areas corresponding to the orientation of the house.  Large open formal lawns, multiple herbaceous borders, raised borders, rose gardens, pleached hedging, yew hedging, planted pergola, ornamental pots for bedding plants, mixed shrub borders, paved areas and mature trees make up the stunning character of this stunning garden.

The Sole gardener will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the garden to a high horticultural standard. There are also raised beds used for growing ornamental plants for the garden including propagation, splitting and growing from seed, as well as composting areas.

As the private garden is located adjacent to, and associated with the nearby golf course, some maintenance of the commercial garden area will be required as part of the role and occasionally providing guidance to the greenkeepers from time to time, for maintaining planted areas. In addition, there are two other properties, the adjoining cottage garden and another garden, all within walking distance, that require gardening work to be undertaken when appropriate.  

Applicants should ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and have comprehensive plant knowledge including herbaceous borders, rose care and pruning, demonstrable experience of gardening autonomously, and must be able to plan their own work effectively at all times of the year.  Possess a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable. Assistant Head Gardener

A friendly, motivated and all rounded Assistant Head Gardener is required to work closely with the Head Gardener to further develop the gardens of a beautiful Grade II* listed 16th century Farmhouse based in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire. The position is full time and permanent.

The peaceful and private 29-acre estate is a stable yard with the majority of acreage is pasture for the horses.  Separated by a Ha-ha ensuring uninterrupted views, the well-maintained gardens surrounding the property include formal gardens, Parterre, Herbaceous borders, rose garden, walled garden, vegetable garden, 3 greenhouses including a beautiful Hartley botanic greenhouse, Koi Pond, Old woodland, ancient oaks and wisteria.

The Assistant Head Gardener will be an arts and crafts gardener with a focus on specialist pruning, kitchen gardening, training and greenhouse management. He / She will be hands on carrying out the planting, sowing, pruning, growing, creative input and design ideas would be welcome, pest & disease treatments, planting and harvesting the produce which is shared on the estate. It is a diverse role so flexibility is key, the successful candidate will also assist with the general maintenance of the garden such as the mowing, strimming and weeding and the clients outsources the hedge cutting. Additional duties may be required such as occasional feeding and care of dogs (Great Dane and 2 dachshunds).

Applicants will ideally hold a horticultural qualification RHS or a recognised horticultural qualification and / or experience working on a private estate. Experience with Spray certificates PA1/PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous but not essential as training can be provided. Applicants will have shown longevity and are looking for a long-term opportunity on a diverse and friendly estate. He / She must work well with others and be confident with their plant knowledge. Horse and animal lover is a plus!

The working hours are 5-day week Monday to Friday 8am -5pm with an hour for lunch. Flexibility is important as occasionally a half day on the weekend maybe required for watering in the greenhouse or when the owners are away for which time off in lieu will be given.

Sole Gardener

An all rounded hands-on Sole Gardener is sought for a stunning Georgian private property surrounded by 22 acres situated near the market town of Chipping Ongar in the Epping Forest District of Essex. The buildings consist of the Main House, a converted guest Barn and a delightful 2-bedroom Lodge Gate house for the Gardener. 

The 22 acres grounds consist of 7 acres of mature gardens surrounding the main house and the further away from the property, the more naturalist the surroundings become. There are 15 acres of meadows, a pond, and a variety of mature specimen trees. There is a long gravel driveway to the front of the house, significant and expansive lawns, topiary, water feature with potted plants, herbaceous beds and borders, variety of roses, a large greenhouse this is currently not used and a kitchen garden - an opportunity for the gardener to use for propagation and growing vegetables.

The principals are looking for a friendly live in gardener with a happy, calm, and positive attitude and the ability to following instructions. The successful applicant will have a love of gardens to maintain the existing garden and grounds, be hardworking, a self-starter and require low management whilst being conscious and mindful of the owner’s privacy when in residence.

The Gardener duties include most aspects of maintaining the grounds and outbuildings, although external specialist contractors are used e.g. tree surgeons for annual high hedging and other major repairs. More specifically, duties include lawn mowing and turf management, general maintenance – pruning, weeding and edging, maintaining the herbaceous Beds, kitchen gardening, glasshouse growing and pest and disease control. Candidates will have experience using and the basic maintenance of garden machinery and equipment.

Other duties must be attended to include keeping gutters and drains clear, raking the gravel drive, maintaining security of the grounds e.g. dealing with the alarm company when required, liaison for visiting contractors, tradesmen and deliveries and putting out the bins weekly. A keen eye for detail is necessary with a positive approach to attend to repairs and jobs immediately.

Working hours are March to October 8 am to 6 pm, Mon – Fri and November to February 8 am to 4 pm, Mon – Fri. The owners may occasionally require assistance with feeding the cats some weekends when we are away.

A generous salary is provided with the vacancy along with a separate 2 bed furnished Cottage with own garden and garage plus all normal house bills e.g. energy, wifi and council tax bills are covered by the employer as well as the use of a car. Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sole Gardener to join the mature garden of a private property located near Grantham, Lincolnshire. After 24 wonderful years within the garden, the current gardener is now looking to retire. Therefore, the owner now requires an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large, high end garden to assist in the ongoing maintenance and development of the garden and grounds to a continued high-standard. This is a full-time permanent position.

The estate covers roughly 40-acres in total with formal features surrounding the main house and two large fields which are rented out to local farmers. The gardens boast a tennis court, football pitch, formal lawns as well as a lake. Other elements include 2 large herbaceous borders, formal hedging and seasonal bedding plants and large pots and urns around the property. There is also a productive kitchen that grows a variety of fruits and vegetables for the main house as well as a cutting garden which is used for creating beautiful planting schemes. The garden is mature and has been professionally maintained therefore the owners are looking for a highly skilled candidate to keep the gardens at a high standard.  

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with extensive experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards are qualities which are essential for this role. Candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General gardening duties will include but are not limited to fine lawn care, pruning, propagating, weeding, topiary management, edging and hedge cutting. The owner is passionate about their garden and want to keep them to an immaculate standard Imagination, flare and an appreciation of textures, colours and sequential bloom will be required for driving the gardens forward. Experience in the use and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery as well as PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates, and a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services.  

As Sole Gardener, there will be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out within the estate which will include but are not limited to gutter clearance and painting, pressure washing, fence repairs, path & driveway clearance and car cleaning. Other duties will include the occasional collection/delivery of vehicles to locations prior to the owners arrival. Such vehicles may also require delivery for servicing.  

The owners divide their time between properties and there may be times duties cannot be carried out due to the owners requiring family privacy; however, the Sole Gardener will be given a schedule of visits and consulted on this matter. Please note, the successful candidate with be offered subject to a and DBS check. Candidates will also need to hold a full driver’s licence due to the remote location of the property.
