Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent, RHS Level 1, 2 or 3, HND, OND, City & Guilds.
  • At least three years relevant experience in horticulture together with 1 year’s proven supervisory experience, together with comprehensive plant knowledge.
  • Clear understanding of the relevant Health and Safety legislation, formal training in manual handling and risk assessment, a valid driving licence.

A sole gardener is sought for an exciting role on this newly developing project in Cheshire. The site consists of approximately four acres of gardens surrounding the main house, and includes parterres, pools, terraces, wisteria walks, greenhouse/kitchen gardens, and herbaceous borders. The wider grounds include mixed native and specimen woods, wildflower meadows and the historic ‘Ladies Walk’ with pools and waterfalls.

Duties will include care of the gardens; ensuring the gardens and grounds are presented to a high standard at all times. Working with the designer to continue developing the gardens and grounds. Propagation. Control of pests, diseases and plant health. Maintenance and mowing of lawns. Keeping pathways and driveways weed free. Care and basic maintenance of garden machinery and tools, As Sole Gardener, there will occasionally be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out, which will include ad hoc caretaking and house plant care.

Applicants should ideally have 3 years’ experience in horticulture, a minimum level 2 RHS qualification, PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates and a full driving license. Chainsaw certification would be advantageous but not essential. However, we are open to hearing from all levels of experience; and would welcome a candidate with less than 3 years’ experience, should you be willing to learn and grow with the role. The role requires a self-motivated individual happy to work alone. An enhanced DBS will be required. A 40-hour week is offered on a permanent basis, with a generous salary for the ideal candidate.

Most importantly, we are looking for someone of a cheerful and positive disposition, with a ‘can and will do’ attitude, to work with this young family. The role is ideally suited to someone who is looking for a permanent and long-term post.

Experienced Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener with the enthusiasm for maintaining a beautiful garden to a high standard set east of Peterborough. The position is full time, permanent and would suit a friendly and knowledgeable all rounded gardener.

The property is a beautiful old Victorian Rectory set within 7 acres of land. The majority of the estate is paddocks without animals onsite and the 3-acre garden consists of extensive manicured lawns, a topiary garden, several mixed beds and borders, roses, hedges with one large hedge along the driveway, old established trees and new trees that were planted this year.

The owner is passionate about her garden and will work closely with the experienced gardener in putting together the plans throughout the year. The owners are a friendly and private couple and therefore, discretion is important at all times. There are two part time gardeners who will assist the experienced gardener in maintaining the garden. Their son currently lives in Cambridge and the Gardener will be expected to maintain their garden once per week for this year.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, ambitious, and physically fit as the role is hands-on.  A passion for gardens and attention to detail is essential with good horticultural and plant knowledge. PA1/PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage although training can be given. A driving licence is required for the role due to the rural locality of the estate and also a van is provided for work purposes. There is a wide range of machinery including gardening tools, vintage tractor and trailer therefore the ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role.

You will need to be organised, able to plan and prioritise your workload, have good communications skills and the ability to work alongside others. The working hours are 8 am to 4 pm with half an hour lunch but there can be some flexibility.

Experienced Gardener

A self-motivated and skilled gardener is sought after for a private house near Woking, Surrey. The position is open to either a full-time sole gardener or on a part time basis (3 – 4 days / week) with additional help.

The property is surrounded by seven acres of garden in total, of which three acres are laid to lawns, beds, borders, yew hedging and a pond. There is also a tennis court, swimming pool, a variety of mature trees and the remaining land is grazing fields. They are in the process of building a greenhouse in the Spring.   

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced gardener and would suit a self-starter with detailed plant knowledge, able to maintain the current structure to a high horticultural standard and to design and execute a series of additional projects to enhance the garden over the years. Additional duties may include swimming pool maintenance and assisting with managing contractors onsite. 

The gardener will be organised, plan and prioritise workload and work autonomously. If a part-timer is appointed, he or she will also manage the additional help. Head Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join a stunning private estate based near Rye, East Sussex on a full-time permanent basis. This position will suit an experienced Senior Gardener looking to take the next step in their career, or an existing Head Gardener with a desire to take on the maintenance of a typical English Country style garden in order to utilise their full horticultural skill set.

Surrounded by lush greenery, rolling hills and picturesque landscapes, the estate covers roughly 1000-acres including farmland, woodland as well as the formal gardens. The estate has been in the owner’s portfolio of properties for many decades, with the 4-acre gardens surrounding the main property featuring expansive formal lawns, herbaceous borders, seasonal bedding plants, small orchard and a vegetable garden which grows a variety of soft fruit and vegetables for the house. Also within the estate is extensive woodland featuring tranquil woodland walks as well as large, semi-commercial glasshouses which propagates a wide variety of cutting flowers for the main house as well as other produce including cacti and vegetables.  In addition to the main house, the estate also features multiple other properties of which the gardens and surrounding grounds will need to be maintained.

Suitable applicants will ideally possess a recognised horticultural qualification as well as extensive experience in horticulturally diverse gardens in a private estate setting. Competence in all horticultural techniques is essential, focusing on vegetable, fruit and flower production and seasonal plant cultivation. Candidates will be expected to manage all aspects of grounds maintenance, including lawns, pathways and irrigation systems. The gardens are 100% organic therefore the implementation of innovative solutions for sustainable landscape practices are expected. This is a hands-on role so good physical fitness and a willingness to work outdoors in all weathers is essential.  

The estate also features beehives and a hop garden and so experience of these would be useful but not essential. Practical experience with the use and care of a full range of garden machinery is desired, with a chainsaw certification being advantageous. Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals with an ability to manage a small team who have been with the property for many years. Being a private, family run estate, discretion is required at all times. Sole Gardener

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a live in Sole Gardener to join the garden of a 16th century Grade II* listed private property located near Ludlow, Shropshire. The owners now require an experienced gardener with a proven track record of managing a large, high-end garden, to assist with the ongoing maintenance and future development of the garden and grounds to a continued high standard. This is a full-time permanent position.

Boasting magnificent views, the gardens are roughly 11-acres in size, with elements including formal lawns, herbaceous borders, perennial beds, small pond, organic vegetable garden, greenhouse, a small woodland and orchard. The gardens are currently under construction with a swimming pool and gym in the process of being built, with completion estimated for 2025. After completion there will be extensive work carried out within the garden, with the client bringing in a Chelsea multi-award winner to create bespoke new areas. The Sole Gardener will be directly involved with the implementation of the scheme and with its development and maintenance thereafter.

Our client seeks an experienced gardener to help maintain the gardens on a year-round basis following the annual calendar. Applicants will ideally possess an academic horticultural qualification, such as RHS level 2 or equivalent, combined with at least 3 years’ experience working in a similar role. As such, excellent plant knowledge and technical skills are essential for this position with experience in compost management, propagation, spraying, weeding and rejuvenating beds. A self-motivated, organised individual with a self-start attitude and proven track record of managing a large garden, with a strong work ethic, ability to work to their own initiative and willingness to work to consistently high standards, are qualities which are essential for this role. The individual should be an excellent communicator and have a good sense of humour. Working closely with the Estate Manager, there will be a requirement for additional duties to be carried out within the estate therefore candidates will be flexible and willing to extend their duties where needed. As such, this is a physically demanding position which requires a fit and strong individual who is comfortable working in all weathers.

General gardening duties will include but are not limited to fine lawn care, pruning, propagating, kitchen gardening, weeding, hoeing, clearing, topiary management, edging and hedge cutting. The Sole Gardener will also be responsible for seasonal planting and providing cut flowers for the main house. Also on site are 2 beehives of which the Sole Gardener will maintain and manage, with training provided if the successful candidate does not have experience with bees. The owners are passionate about their garden and want to keep them to an immaculate standard. Experience in the use of and maintenance of a wide range of gardening machinery including tractors, as well as a chainsaw certification are desirable for this position. The house is equipped with machinery, which the gardener should be capable of maintaining between services. 

A 2-bedroom coach house on site, is available to the successful candidate. Council tax and utility bills are covered by the employer, with partners, dependants and pets welcome; dogs must be well behaved and socialise well with other dogs. The owners divide their time between properties and as this is a live in role the Sole Gardener will share security responsibilities with other staff on site. Candidates will need to hold a full driver’s licence due to the location of the property.

Working hours for this role are 8am – 5pm Sunday to Thursday, or Tuesday to Saturday; with annual leave bring 20 days plus Bank Holidays.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sole Gardener to take ownership of a beautiful private estate located near Littlehampton, West Sussex.  This position would suit a presentable and time-served experienced gardener/horticulturalist with a good work ethic, good physical fitness and the ability to plan their own work and time.

The three acre private garden is partitioned into areas corresponding to the orientation of the house.  Large open formal lawns, multiple herbaceous borders, raised borders, rose gardens, pleached hedging, yew hedging, planted pergola, ornamental pots for bedding plants, mixed shrub borders, paved areas and mature trees make up the stunning character of this stunning garden.

The Sole gardener will be responsible for the management and maintenance of the garden to a high horticultural standard. There are also raised beds used for growing ornamental plants for the garden including propagation, splitting and growing from seed, as well as composting areas.

As the private garden is located adjacent to, and associated with the nearby golf course, some maintenance of the commercial garden area will be required as part of the role and occasionally providing guidance to the greenkeepers from time to time, for maintaining planted areas. In addition, there are two other properties, the adjoining cottage garden and another garden, all within walking distance, that require gardening work to be undertaken when appropriate.  

Applicants should ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification and have comprehensive plant knowledge including herbaceous borders, rose care and pruning, demonstrable experience of gardening autonomously, and must be able to plan their own work effectively at all times of the year.  Possess a good level of competency in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery, and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable. Experience working on a diverse garden and physical fitness is required, as is a positive approach, general outlook and the desire to realise the pride in managing a private estate garden with excellent attention to detail. 

A 40-hour week is offered on a permanent basis, with a generous salary for the ideal candidate.  Please note that candidates must hold a full driving licence.
