About the job

Based in the prestigious University Parks, we have an exciting new opportunity for an Operations Supervisor to join our management team. You will report directly to the Operations Manager and Operations Technical Officer and will be responsible for the supervising and management of a range of horticultural operations.

The role will include:

  • Responsibility for the effective daily supervision and work allocation of staff carrying out a broad range of grounds and garden maintenance tasks within the Parks, the University estate and across the customer sites.
  • To be responsible for line managing a team of gardeners and senior gardeners, dealing with personnel matters and staff development.
  • Supervising the correct and safe use of equipment and vehicles, including routine maintenance inspections and carrying out operator training.
  • Involvement with strategic planning for seasonal operations, projects and the development of the team.
  • On site project management to include, laying out and site set up, implementing design plans and planting schemes.
  • To implement and assist with the continuing development of the health and safety policy by carrying out Risk assessment and giving training talks to colleagues.
About you

You should have:

  • A craft qualification, (e.g. National Certificate, BTEC National Diploma, City and Guilds or NVQ level 2) in horticulture.
  • Supervisory experience or experience of team leading, with a good plant knowledge.
  • The ability to motivate and engage others.
  • Experience of working in a customer facing role.
  • Have knowledge of a broad range of plants and horticultural equipment.
  • Good communication and people skills.

A rare and attractive vacancy has arisen at the private homes of one of the country’s foremost garden designers, based in the beautiful Lune Valley, Lancashire.  A Skilled Gardener with excellent plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticulture is required to assist the Head Gardener, and in his absence be responsible for the garden and associated areas.  Applicants must be skilled and experienced gardeners with, ideally, an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above.  The successful candidate will be required to provide direction and supervision to employees less skilled than themselves, in the absence of the Head Gardener.

This stunning and diverse site, nestled at the foot of ancient beech woodland at the foot of the eastern side of the Lune Valley, contains many features designed to impress at every turn.  The 12-acre property comprises parkland, an entrance forecourt, terraced gardens, a series of colour themed gardens and herbaceous borders, a lake, a bog and lakeside garden, a wild garden, a large terraced vegetable garden, a nuttery and orchard, a woodland and water gardens.  The gardens provide an impressive example of a large property containing most features of horticulture and design, such that it serves not only as a beautiful home but also as an example of this international garden designer’s work.  The variety of features, species, topography and conditions observed within the site provides an idyllic platform from which gardeners and the client may experiment with innovative ideas, and improve their skills and knowledge in parallel.

In addition to hands-on garden management (in association with the Head Gardener and property owner), the successful applicant will contribute to the preparation and implementation of management plans for the gardens on an ongoing basis.  The Skilled Gardener will assist, and in the absence of the Head Gardener be responsible for, supervision of garden staff and the management of any delegated projects, maintenance and daily garden tasks.  Contribution to all appropriate garden meetings and assistance of the Head Gardener will be expected in order to promote open and effective communication on work related issues amongst staff.  Applicants for this position must be confident in character, well presented and be willing to promote the public’s enjoyment of the garden through high standards of presentation and customer care.  The successful applicant will be required to share the weekend responsibilities with Head Gardener on a rota basis, i.e. greenhouse and nursery management, feeding the chickens and outing them to bed, and checking the security of the Hall and the grounds as a matter of course. 

Applicants for this role should hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 3 or above as well as extensive experience of gardening at a skilled level on horticulturally diverse private estates.  Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence, be physically fit and must be happy working in all weather conditions.  Continued professional development by way of relevant training courses will be offered to the successful candidate, to which attendance is expected.

Accommodation is provided in the local village by way of a two-bedroom house.  Council tax and rent are covered by the employer, with the successful candidate being liable for their own utility bills.

An opportunity has arisen for an Experienced Gardener to join an award-winning, internationally renowned wine-producing brand based in West Sussex.  The successful applicant will join the Head Gardener and one other gardener in working towards objectives for the gardens, ponds and non-Vineyard grounds, including the beautiful private gardens of the CEO.  The successful candidate will be responsible for the general maintenance and development of the gardens with a view to creating an enjoyable experience for guests and visitors.

Set within 13-acres of gardens, the formal aspect comprises 6-acres around the manor house.  A small cottage garden within the grounds is to be maintained in addition to the above.  Garden features within the estate gardens comprise a kitchen garden, wildflower areas, a cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage, an orchard, cloud-pruned box hedging, topiary, a formal courtyard, a large pond and surrounding woodland.  The garden areas of the estate are not managed organically, though chemical use is kept to a minimum.

Applicants will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 2 (or above) and should have at least two years’ experience of working in private estate gardens and/or horticulturally diverse public gardens. Candidates must be confident in their use of garden machinery and with their plant knowledge, have an ability to work to a high standard at all times, and in working to established health and safety standards. Chemical spray certificates are desirable but not essential.  

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include lawn care (mowing, edging, feeding, scarifying, aerating and watering, weeding), planting and pruning, maintenance of the kitchen garden and cut flower garden, greenhouse, fruit cage and orchard, basic maintenance of all garden equipment (and associated liaison with the Estate Maintenance Department as necessary).  Applicants should have a basic awareness of pests and diseases and, with appropriate training if required, will be able to apply chemicals where appropriate.  Maintenance of the irrigation system will be necessary at times, as will that of the composting bins and ponds.  As a member of the small garden team, assistance with gritting will also be required in winter.

Applications are sought from experienced and knowledgeable private estate gardeners who possess good horticultural knowledge and a positive, friendly character.  The successful applicant will be self-motivated, have excellent communication skills and attention to detail.  Good physical fitness and a commitment to the garden is required, as is the ability to work well within a small team; with diplomacy and a positive attitude.  A full driving licence and your own transport are required for this role as the estate is located rurally.

A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced individual to develop a large market garden on a sizeable estate in Maidstone, Kent.

Currently the market garden occupies 10 acres and it is likely that this would be expanded in the future. The garden comprises of apple, pear, plum and cherry orchards chosen for flavour not yield. A dozen varieties of strawberries and raspberries are grown mainly of rare heritage varieties. The glass houses are derelict and will require replacement.

The mission is to grow the very finest varieties of the very finest fruits, vegetables and herbs. These may be traditional or non-traditional. The estate is associated with an artisanal food business so that although this is not a commercial enterprise the produce would be supplied to the business as well as to the family. For this reason, knowledge of prevailing rules and regulations is vital.

The project will include the reinstatement of the glasshouses and a full landscaping program. It is envisaged that the landscaping element would be a joint project with the estate head gardener. The role will require a Market gardener of exceptional knowledge and experience in succession planting, cultivation of vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers and micro herbs. He / she will be capable of building a team with the aim of creating a market garden of scale, productivity, diversity and beauty using the most effective sustainable methods. The position is autonomous but would require cooperation with the estate head gardener.

Applicants for this role must have extensive horticultural knowledge in terms of market/kitchen garden management and the continuous supply of high-quality produce.  Clear and regular communication with the owners will be required throughout the development of the garden and to supply the required fruit and vegetables. A good working knowledge of propagation, organic pest and disease management and good plant husbandry is essential. As well as good understanding of Health and safety legislation is also required.
