This gives candidates an opportunity to experience a variety of work and client interfaces. They operate predominantly in the East London and Docklands area and are currently looking to expand their team to meet business growth demands.

Key points

Plant knowledge is an essential part of the role, along with a keen eye for detail and precision. Proven experience in all aspects of grounds maintenance and a good understanding of safe working practices is essential.

Experience using garden maintenance machinery and tools e.g. pedestrian mowers; strimmers; leaf blowers etc. is required. Work hours are a minimum of 40 hrs a week Monday-Friday.

Candidates must be flexible to work additional hours if required, and willing to work across a number of sites and in all weather conditions. Reliability and punctuality must be maintained at all times. The company vans are stocked with quality tools and are provided as part of the role. Initially you will be working under an experienced team leader to familiarize yourself with the sites and client requirements.

Must haves

Candidates will have good horticultural knowledge and practical ability. Essential skills will include:

  • Good knowledge of horticultural maintenance techniques
  • Excellent customer liaison skills
  • Practical skills using garden maintenance machinery and tools
  • Full UK driving licence preferred but not essential

An RHS Level 2 in Horticulture or similar is highly desirable for this role. The ideal candidate will have experience of working in both commercial and domestic environments.

PA1/PA6 and LANTRA/NPTC certificates in any other relevant machinery and equipment use will further strengthen a candidate’s application.

Gardener - Live Out - EC7597

A motivated and driven gardener is sought after to manage and maintain the gardens of a newly purchased property in New Forest, Hampshire.

The property, currently undergoing refurbishment, is set in 25 acres of land with the vast majority being fields and meadows. The garden landscaping is due to be completed at the beginning of 2020 and the client is looking for a gardener to come onboard this year to work alongside the landscapers in developing the garden and then to maintain and manage the garden thereafter. The garden itself will be laid out as park land with a small area of formal gardens, laurel hedges and expansive lawns. There are established plants and shrubs that will be retained such as azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolia trees.

The ideal candidate will be organised, have a good eye for detail and complete the work to a high standard. Applicants must have good horticultural knowledge, ideally have completed a horticultural training/qualification and have demonstratable experience of garden maintenance. A full clean driving licence is essential and grounds maintenance related training certificates such as PA1 & PA6 and chainsaw would be advantageous. This position requires someone to take ownership of the garden and therefore be hands on, physically fit and proactive in their approach.

In addition, the successful applicant will have a good understanding of the use and maintenance of garden machinery and tractors as well as have good craft skills to undertaker minor repairs to fencing etc. The working week will be 45 hours per week, but exact hours will be flexible (around 8am - 4pm Monday to Friday). The position includes 4 weeks paid holiday to be taken at a convenient time for the garden.

The estate extends to 11 acres and is one of London’s biggest private gardens. The garden consists of a lake, a variety of mature and young trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, extensive lawns and a large water feature.

The successful candidate will join a team of eight and working closely with the head gardener they will develop and maintain the garden to a high horticultural standard. Responsibilities will include planting, pruning, soil cultivation and bed preparation, mulching, propagation, weeding and lawn care. Our client is looking for candidates who are enthusiastic, flexible, responsible and proactive, and have a high sense of integrity and discretion. A hands-on approach and meticulous attention to detail are also essential qualities.

In addition, the horticultural side, the gardener would be required to assist in maintaining the garden structures such as sheds, fences, pathways (including leaf blowing and power washing) and ensure all garden machinery are properly cared for.

Good plant knowledge and all-round horticultural skills is required, and it would be preferable but not essential for applicants to hold a recognised horticultural qualification. Experience of working in a large garden of a similar nature would also be advantageous. PA1/PA6 spraying certificates and chainsaw certificates would be desirable, though not essential as training can be provided if necessary. The threats from pests and diseases are a major concern to the UK, and to the nation’s gardeners in particular. Plant health in gardens is one of the four themes in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) science strategy (https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/pdf/rhs-science-strategy-2015-2019) and the Society had recently reviewed its plant health policies and procedures. As part of the review the RHS has decided to significantly invest in this area including funding the position of Plant Reception Coordinator.

This role will develop, implement and oversee a programme of activities to improve plant health practice in the RHS, and to provide authoritative and up-to-date advice and information to RHS members and the general public.

Depending on the knowledge, skills and experience recruitment will either be at the Scientist or Senior Scientist grade. A degree in a relevant biological subject, plus a higher degree or horticultural experience is required. Knowledge of horticultural practices, plant pest and disease diagnosis and management, and plant health regulation and certification is required. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate to scientists and the public, and will be able to work effectively as part of a team and using their own initiative.

A wonderful opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Gardener in the New Forest, Hampshire. This stunning Grade II listed private country house was designed by John Nash and includes two cottages, a gate house, a staff flat and 5-acre garden.  The main residential buildings and associated gardens are nestled within 180 acres of parkland in the beautiful New Forest in south west England.  The village of Bramshaw is a highly sought after location; close to Lyndhurst and the historic market town of Romsey.  Candidates with a good level of all-round estate maintenance experience, i.e. machinery maintenance, swimming pools, animal care etc. in addition to garden maintenance, are encouraged to apply.

An experienced multi-skilled estate gardener is required to maintain and develop a beautiful private garden near Guildford in Surrey, on behalf of a welcoming and appreciative family.  Applications are sought from qualified professionals with experience of managing private estate gardens autonomously, to a high standard.  A generous salary and pension contributions are offered in return for commitment to the garden, attention to detail and a positive friendly character.

The stunning 15th century rurally located property overlooks a large lake and is backed by mature woodland and open grassland.  With a view over the Surrey Hills, the three-acre formal garden comprise expansive lawns, formal and mixed herbaceous beds/borders, wildflower slopes, shrubberies, fruit trees, yew and box topiary, climbing roses, hedges, mature specimen trees, as well as a sun garden, swimming pool and a tennis court.

The ideal candidate will be academically qualified to Level 2 (or above) with at least five years’ experience of managing private estate gardens as a Sole or Skilled Gardener and/or equivalent relevant experience.  Applicants should be physically fit hands-on gardeners with experience of managing small garden budgets and their own time efficiently.  Competence in the operation and basic maintenance of a wide range of garden machinery is essential, as is good plant knowledge and that of seasonal garden management.  Applicants should have experience with plant propagation, correct species-specific pruning techniques (wisteria, roses, young trees etc.), identification and treatment of plant pests and diseases, lawn care (scarifying, aerating, seeding, weed/feed application etc.), as well as an ability and willingness to carry out other associated estate duties as they arise.  Spray certificates (PA1/6) Chainsaw license (CS30/31) are desirable but not essential.  The Sole Gardener will be responsible for ensuring the security arrangements for garden buildings and stores are observed at all times.

Candidates with an open, positive approach to estate gardening are sought, as there will be some additional, relatively infrequent duties required of the successful candidate to ensure the smooth running of the estate.  Such duties may include preparing the garden/grounds for spring and winter, i.e. storage and treatment of garden furniture and equipment, the moving of furniture for events as necessary, basic maintenance/cleaning of guttering, outdoor buildings, lighting etc., restocking of the log store and baskets in the house when necessary, taking out bins for collection, visits to the local refuse centre when required.  The Sole Gardener will also be responsible for basic regular pool maintenance, i.e. checking the ph. levels, backwashing etc.  The successful applicants will need to be comfortable around the family dog and be willing to help with hens.  Candidates must be willing and able to source contractors on an ad-hoc basis, when necessary, for projects such as larger clearances, tree work, larger fencing projects, water storage systems etc.  The property owner will work directly with the successful candidate with a view to purchasing additional tools and machinery that is deemed necessary to fulfil the job role efficiently.
