Experienced Gardener (Live out) - EC4232

A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an experienced gardener to join small team on a 60 acre private estate located near Rye in East Sussex.  The role will suit a presentable and knowledgeable gardener with demonstrable experience of working on private estates.

The gardens comprise of formal areas, sizeable flower beds, extensive hedging, a ¼ acre kitchen garden, a greenhouse, with large areas of lawn, woodland and ponds.  The formal gardens cover approximately six acres, with seven acres of semi-formal and managed woodland including ponds and water cascades.

The team have reached the point of maintaining and improving the gardens, as major building and ground works have been continuous for the past 10 years.  Future plans include improvements in plant and lawn care, development of the sustainable kitchen garden as well as implementation of new projects such as the construction of a rose arbor walkway. There will always be changes in plant design and herbaceous boarders, yearly propagation for new bedding plants for future designs and the potential for some very interesting projects to come to fruition in the next few years, each of which will demonstrate unique design and garden management.

The client is seeking a gardener with good attention to detail, good horticultural knowledge and the ability to operate garden machinery efficiently and safely.  As is often required on private estates of this kind, garden team members should also be prepared to assist the Head Groundsman with other estate tasks as and when necessary.

The role will entail year-round maintenance of lawns, hedge cutting, pruning of shrubs, weeding of beds/borders and assistance with the kitchen garden.  Candidates should be suitably qualified gardeners, ideally with academic horticultural qualifications and previous experience of working as part of a team on a large private estate.

Applicants must have a good understanding of the discretion and confidentiality associated with working for clients on private estates.  A CRB check and references will be required of the successful candidate.  Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence.

Working hours are typically 7:30-5.00 Monday to Friday, with a system to store unworked winter hours for use at busier times, or on occasional weekends. Overtime is paid, as are discretionary bonuses where appropriate.  Salaries are reviewed on an annual basis in April.
