Our client is seeking a bright individual who will feel comfortable in a busy smaller type business specialising in ericaceous plants which has built up a highly regarded reputation within the trade. We are a wholesale nursery supplying Garden Centres large and small over the whole of the UK .  The company employs 15 staff with a production manager taking care of the growing side . The role will involve someone coming into the business and working within in all departments to gain a thorough grounding in how the business works and is run on a daily basis.

This will require a bright individual with a solid academic background being a good all-rounder who can demonstrate practical skills and is not afraid to be hands on when required.

The successful candidate will work closely with the production manager and managing director on a daily basis to support and learn all aspects of the business including sales. Once proven as a capable manager the successful applicant will look forward to future promotion. 

Key Skills:
  • Knowledge of ornamental plant production would be advantageous, but not essential.
  • Understanding of a seasonal business.
  • Experience in a management or supervisory role with a focus on up skilling and developing team members.
  • Recognising the importance of maintaining plant quality and uniformity.
  • Communicate effectively with Production Manager and Managing Director to ensure timescales of the above are met.
  • Discuss and implement any perceived efficiencies that can be made in all departments.
  • Be an effective team builder and leading by example.
  • Supporting the Production Manager in organising and prioritising daily and weekly tasks.
  • Be efficient and thorough with accurate record keeping.
  • Ability to prepare, present and understand budgets.
  • Ensure Health and Safety requirements are up to date and understood by staff.
  • A sound working knowledge of Microsoft word and excel would advantageous.
  • Any certificates such as forklift use and PA1/PA6 spraying are advantageous. However, training will be provided if necessary.
  • Have the foresight to look at new varieties and keep ahead of industry trends.

An ability to engage with our wholesale customers in a friendly professional manner when required will be an essential part of carrying out your role in the future.

Part time Gardener

An exciting part time vacancy has arisen for a driven and hands-on gardener, 3 days a week for a beautifully kept private garden situated in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. This opportunity would suit a plantsperson with a passion for ornamental and kitchen gardening.

The property is based within 56 acres with farmland. Gardener/Groundsperson

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a hardworking and passionate Gardener/Groundsperson who is eager to both apply and develop their hands on horticultural skills and knowledge, working closely within a small team of gardeners to maintain and develop a beautiful private estate located between East Grinstead and Tunbridge Wells.

This historic country house is part of an estate spanning 75 acres, including extensive gardens and woodland. Surrounding this stunning property, the formal gardens include herbaceous borders, informal and formal plantings, with formal and informal lawns, a walled kitchen garden, glasshouse, fruit and specimen tree planting, arboreta and parkland.

They will posses the ability to take instruction, completing tasks while working in a team, contributing to a positive and friendly working environment.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of plant types and good plant identification skills. Duties will include maintenance of the grounds and gardens to the highest possible standards, therefore experience in the use of basic garden machinery is necessary. Demonstratable knowledge of tree, lawn and plant maintenance is essential, with any horticultural qualifications and tickets such as PA1/PA6 spraying or CS30/31 chainsaw certificates being advantageous but not essential.

Trainee Gardener

An incredible opportunity has become available for a Trainee Gardener to join a team on a horticulturally diverse and aesthetically beautiful private garden in Salisbury, Wiltshire.

Although previous experience is not essential it will be important for candidates to demonstrate a commitment to pursuing a career in amenity horticulture. As such, it would be advantageous to show a background in gardening on private estates, volunteering or paid employment. However full training on the job will be offered working with an experienced team of six gardeners.

The garden is approximately 35 acres plus woodland and water meadows. All areas are maintained along organic lines, with the good-sized vegetable garden subject to soil association inspection. The main formal gardens have extensive lawns and borders.  Hedges, including Beech, Hornbeam Yew and box frame the garden; some of these are over 5 metres high. A large water garden and water meadows, lakes and large wildflower meadows continue the garden in a less formal manner.  An Isabel and Julian Bannerman designed swimming pool garden is an exciting recent addition. The house and garden are alongside the river Avon providing a peaceful aspect. Three good sized green-houses and a poly tunnel provide a productive heart.

It will be a requirement for candidates to wish to engage in an academic program either as an attendee at a local college or as a distance learner. It will be subject to discussion with the candidates as too which of these options is best for the individual and employer. There is also the possibility of a formal apprenticeship. Training will include chainsaw (CS 30/31 and pesticide PA1 and 6 certificates. Other practical courses possible.

The role is full time to a period of two years. Working hours are: 5 days per week of 40 hours. Normally 8am to 4:30 with 30mins for lunch. Fully funded study leave to attend college or an equivalent time to pursue distance learning to a level of at least level 2 or level 3 dependant on the individual’s abilities subject to discussion. Holiday leave, 21 days plus bank holidays (n.b. holidays will have to fit the academic year). Weekend duty in a rota may be required. Due to the remote location and the possible need to travel to college, one’s own transport will be necessary.

The job is, of necessity outdoors, with the requirement to work in all weathers and is physically demanding. All weather and protective clothing and PPE will be provided.

Salary will be subject to experience but will be at least minimum wage (age related) to a maximum of £23000. A pension scheme will be open after 3 months with a 5% employer contribution, 3 % employee.

This is an exciting role for which the successful candidate will gain a thorough grounding in all aspects of private-estate gardening.

  • Checking for pests, weeds etc and treating where necessary within set guidelines.

  • Completing Maintenance Report sheets and where applicable and forwarding to the office in a timely manner

Part time Gardener

A new vacancy has arisen on a large country garden near the town of Market Harborough in Leicestershire for a Gardener to utilise their horticultural knowledge and experience on a part-time (3-days/week) self-employed basis.  The property owner is a keen Gardener, and the successful candidate will be working closely with them to manage and maintain their garden to a high standard.

The 10-acre property is mainly paddocks with a contractor maintaining the grounds. The 1.5-acre mature garden surrounding the house is beautifully maintained and consists of lawns, mixed beds and borders with a large rhododendron bed, a patio with potted plants, hedges and various mature and specimen trees. The lower garden is ¼ of an acre on a bank and an opportunity for creative input from the Gardener if they would be interested.

The gardens are currently maintained by local contractors; however, the property owner is looking for a skilled gardener to focus on their garden two or three days per week. Should the successful applicant wish to take on more hours, the owners would be happy for them to do so to assist with the maintenance of the paddocks. Duties will include weeding, pruning, mowing, splitting plants, deadheading, putting the garden to bed for the winter, leaf clearing in the autumn, hedge cutting, composting and splitting wood in the winter.

Applicants will have previous experience working on a large country garden and ideally hold PA1/PA6 spray certificates.  He / She will be organised, able to plan and prioritise and work to a high standard.  Other requirements for the role are good communications skills and ability to work alongside other contractors, and with the property owner on a regular basis. A willingness to work outside in all weathers, have the determination and drive to get a job done and a have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required, as is an ability to operate a range of garden machinery.

This is a hands-on and enjoyable role, so applicants must have a good level of fitness as well as genuine enthusiasm for the garden and wider estate in general as well as a positive character overall. Due to the rural location of the property, a driving licence and own vehicle is required.
