Part-time Skilled Gardener

Part-time Skilled Gardener required

A rare opportunity has arisen for a skilled self-employed gardener/horticulturist to contribute to a wonderful private garden in Surrey.  This position will suit an academically qualified and experienced plantsperson in the Cobham area, with room in their schedule for one day per week.

The historic garden has been part of the NGS for over 30-years and is owned by a respected horticulturist.  The garden is of a natural style with some formal areas and is densely planted throughout.  At just under an acre, the garden is not large but contains a range of plants and features too numerous to list individually, including a green wall, a stumpery planted with ferns, pleached whitebeam and large ‘naturalistic’ beds and borders.  The classic English country style could be described as a ‘secret garden’ and is a haven for insect and birdlife.

Applicants for this role should be self-employed skilled gardeners with excellent plant knowledge and a genuine passion for horticulture.  Although just one day per week, the working day will require energy and good time management to reflect the owner’s drive and hands-on commitment to the garden that she demonstrates.  The successful candidate will be expected to be able to identify and manage a range of plants and features and must therefore be physically fit with a thorough knowledge of horticulture.  An academic horticultural qualification at RHS Level 3 is desired, though not necessarily essential if a strong horticultural work history can be demonstrated.
