Senior Gardener – EC8416

From English Country Gardeners

Alternative Text

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Senior Gardener to join a stunning private estate near Epping in Essex.  This role would suit an academically qualified and experienced gardener with the drive and initiative to manage a horticulturally diverse garden to a very high standard.

The beautiful 22-acre private estate has had the input of respected garden designers and artists in recent years, and the owners plan to continue to develop the property with the assistance of the successful applicant.  The current Senior Gardener has developed the garden significantly and to a high standard but is now moving on in order to be closer to family.

The garden comprises formal and informal lawns, an orchard, hot border, a large lake, rose parterres, shrub and herbaceous borders, climbing wisteria, box and mixed topiary, and a kitchen garden.  The garden also includes, and is surrounded by, a variety of mature exotic and native tree species which provide depth and character throughout the estate.  The Senior Gardener will be required to manage one full-time Assistant Gardener and will benefit from occasional assistance from the housekeeper in the garden where necessary.  The successful applicant must also be able to work with the garden consultant/designer and the property owner in relation to further garden development.

Applicants for this position should hold academic horticultural qualifications, preferably at Level 3 or above, extensive experience of gardening on private estates and good plant/horticultural knowledge in general.  The ability to work to a high degree of detail is essential, as is the willingness to assist with other estate duties alongside the estate team when necessary.  Applicants should hold demonstrable experience in each of the above garden areas and be keen to pass on their knowledge to the full-time Assistant Gardener.

In addition to a Level 3 Horticultural qualification (or above), suitable applicants will ideally hold certificates in spraying (PA1/PA6) and must be able to undertake basic routine machinery maintenance (strimmers, mowers and hedge cutters etc.) when required.  Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence, must be physically fit, presentable, friendly and positive in their outlook to maintain the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the estate.
