Working For: Horticruitment

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity to join a long-established, family-run horticultural business as a Nursery Foreman. Based on a 5-hectare glasshouse site, the wholesale nursery specialises in producing and supplying high-quality bedding plants to garden centres. While direct nursery experience is beneficial, it is not essential. Our client is open to applications from candidates with a range of horticultural or garden centre backgrounds. What’s most important is a strong track record in staff management, excellent organisational skills, and a practical, proactive approach to leading a busy and productive working environment.

Job Description:

As the Nursery Foreman, you will be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and leadership of a team of up to 30 staff, ensuring smooth operations and a positive, collaborative working environment. Key responsibilities include overseeing the production process, coordinating order dispatch to maintain efficiency, managing incoming deliveries, and ensuring the overall upkeep and maintenance of the nursery site. This role may particularly appeal to candidates currently in a management role within a garden centre environment who are now looking to move into a less customer-facing, more operationally focused position.

Key Skills:

Our client is open to receiving applications from a range of horticultural or garden centre backgrounds — direct nursery experience is not essential. What matters most is strong staff management, organisational ability, and a hands-on approach to leading a busy, operational environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience in team leadership within a horticultural or retail setting and be confident managing multiple priorities while maintaining smooth day-to-day operations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, supervising, and motivating staff across all areas of the nursery
  • Managing the loading and dispatch of deliveries to ensure accuracy and efficiency
  • Overseeing stock control and inventory to minimise waste and maintain availability
  • Coordinating and ensuring the general maintenance of the nursery site and equipment
  • Creating and maintaining a safe and efficient working environment
  • Forklift license.
  • 7.5T vehicle licence.

Benefits:

  • This is a full-time, hands-on position offering the chance to work closely with the business owners to drive daily operations and long-term success.
  • This role offers a competitive salary of up to £40,000, depending on experience.
  • Additionally, the role includes on-site accommodation in a spacious 5-bedroom farmhouse (Utilities to be covered by the candidate).
