An incredible vacancy has arisen for a Sole Gardener to take on the responsibility for developing a 5-acre private garden located near Heathfield, East Sussex.  This is a fantastic opportunity for a skilled horticulturalist with a keen interest in developing a beautiful garden and being part of establishing a garden from the beginning.

The owners bought the property 3 years ago and have spent this period renovating the house. They are now looking to focus their attention on the development of the garden.  have engaged a designer who has created a plan for the garden, and the owners are particularly keen to employ a passionate plants person with a creative flair and a keen eye for detail to implement the plans and have input into the design of the garden. The garden is part of a 400-acre livestock farm.

The plan for the garden is to create different zones; plant varied herbaceous / shrub beds and borders, create a kitchen garden with raised beds and a cutting garden, plant an orchard, input a pond, build a greenhouse and more. There are 4 outbuildings that will be linked to the main house with new pathways and the surrounding planting is to flow throughout the garden. This will be a 2-to-3-year development project with maintenance and continued enhancement thereafter. Landscapers will be contracted to build the pond and certain aspects of the garden and the Sole Gardener will be expected to liaise with the landscapers on the work carried out.

Applicants will have extensive hands-on experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, combined with comprehensive plant knowledge and experience working on development projects in the garden. A recognised horticultural qualification would be desirable, though not essential if evidence of adequate experience can be provided. Practical experience with a full range of garden machinery is useful.

The appointed candidate will be required to work unsupervised and will liaise with the owner regarding specific requests involving the garden development. Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced professionals with an ability to work with others e.g. Landscapers and contractors. Due to the rural location of the property, it is essential that applicants hold a UK driving licence.

This new and exciting opportunity will suit an experienced horticulturist with excellent attention to detail and with garden planning and development experience.
