Our client is celebrating 30+ years of excellence and is Britain’s leading horticultural resource centre. They offer more than 100,000 mature plants, specimen trees, shrubs and herbaceous perennials across their sites in Buckinghamshire. Our client also offers design and garden installation services to help you make the most of your outdoor space.
The Production supervisor will be based on one of their sites – a 3.5 acre walled nursery on a country estate with 60% under protection. Th nursery supervisor will train and develop their skillset on this site in preparation to potentially move into a Nursery Production Manager position within 18 months. It is essential that the Nursery Production Supervisor has (or developed) the technical expertise to be able to move into the management role and will be assessed throughout the 18-month period. The owners are open to experienced Production Supervisors or horticulturalists willing to train for the role.
The person appointed will be responsible for managing the activities of the production staff at all stages of growing, harvesting, packing, distribution and selling of the nursery plant stock. This will include stock control and the health and safety aspects of the work. You will also be required to ensure that the plant stock meets the high-quality standards expected, and that your team has an adequate provision of materials and equipment to carry out their work effectively.
Applicants will either have experience in or the base knowledge of:
-Good experience and training in protected growing (polytunnels), hardy nursery stock.
-Management of horticultural crops from seed.
-Experienced cuttings propagator.
-Experience and knowledge of growing potted plants and nursery stock.
-Ability and understanding of the importance of maintaining records on the growing operation.
PA1 and PA6 Certified as well as forklift licence is desirable for the role or the willingness to acquire as the client would be happy to support the training. A horticultural qualification is required for the role as well as good horticultural knowledge including hardy nursery stock. For the more experienced candidates, professional horticultural experience as a commercial grower is important. A driving licence is essential for the role.
Candidates will have the enthusiasm, and passion to drive the business forward. It is also important that you have good communication skills and are able to plan and organise work activities effectively to ensure that plant stock is ready for dispatch when required.
